Sony: 'No plans to dial back third-party deals in 2016'

One could have thought Sony would be more coy with third-party deals next year because of the great PS4 exclusive games coming in 2016 (SFV (console exclusive), Uncharted 4, NMS (console exclusive), Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last Guardian, Persona 5, etc). But that won't be the case, according to PlayStation’s European president Jim Ryan.

With PS4’s library set to become a far stronger offering in 2016 – Street Fighter V, Uncharted 4 and No Man’s Sky are all among the highly-anticipated console exclusives set for release on the machine – Sony might be forgiven for scaling back its reliance on third-party marketing deals and promotions.

But that won’t be the case, says PlayStation’s European president Jim Ryan.

“We are going to be strong with games that we have developed and we will publish, but third-party partnerships will continue to be important to us,” he told MCV.

“The days of a platform holder working in isolation are long-gone."

Highlight third party AAA games while first party focuses on VR?

If this is true, then I'm not sure how I feel about Sony's priorities.

id much rather them ramp up first party support, but game development is getting insanely expensive and these third party deals seem to make games that wouldnt happen normally, actually happen

They probably have a long term deal with Activision for CoD, so they will definitely be behind Infinity Ward's game next year.

Eh, the barrier to entry on those deals are alot lower when you're already leading in market share by quite a large margin that only looks to be growing. No reason not to go for broke and finish the fight before it really starts.

As long as they're just "Console Exclusive" and I can get them on PC, then I guess it's ok. They can keep Uncharted.

I'm not a huge fan of exclusive this and exclusive that (for 3rd party stuff, I mean), but I guess you can't just expect them to stop.

A statement like that kinda makes me roll my eyes, but when you look at the first-party output for 2016 it doesn't bother me too much. It's a superlative line-up on the horizon for the PS4 to be sure.

until a bunch of them get delayed to 2017, like Gravity Rush 2 and Horizon

This. It's a little insufferable when any exec brags on stage that they've got dibs on timed exclusive content for [INSERT VIDEO GAME HERE], but it seems to be a strategy that's working for them, so I guess it's a necessary evil.

I just really hate those kind of announcements. They immediately make me tune out.

Why would they?

First post nails it. Yep, why would they? It works. And I know a lot of gamers don't like it, but from a business standpoint, it works, and it's way easier and cheaper than to build a new studio or IP.

After being everyone's leftover food when it comes to games last gen with the PS3, it's kinda odd to see Sony essentially doing what the Xbox 360 did to succeed. Only difference is, Sony has the first-party studios and franchises to maintain momentum.

Don't see why they would stop when they are in an advantageous position to do it.

Especially when it concerns Japanese developed games.

Uncharted 4, Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush 2, MLB The Show, Ratchet & Clank...I'm not seeing first party focus on VR. Games that can work well with VR(Dreams, GT Sport) will have that as optional, but that is about the extent of it.

Agreed.

Been a while since my Xbox One console is just gathering dust, Sony can get all the exclusive 3rd party deals they want but do no shortchange the pc please.

I don't believe Horizon and TLG will come out next year so they will probably still need whatever exclusive deal they can get.

WHy would they? Everyone is making money coming and going, and despite the vocal minority the fanbase loves it. Hell I bet you will see more next year and I bet Bethesda and whoever makes Tomb Raider kind of regret not getting aboard the train this year

Before it starts? It is already half way over.

First party focuses on VR, where did he say that? Are you just creating a narrative in your own head?

Big first-party exclusives announcing support for PSVR (Driveclub, Gran Turismo) does not mean they are diverting their priorities with first party games towards VR.

You can bet every console manufacturer would rather have third party developers do the work for them if the door is made open.

Oh, i'm sure there will be plenty of PS4 only exclusives as well as console exclusives, especially in Japan.

We already have a ton coming, and i can't really see it changing

No matter how much sense they make I still find any of these deals to be utter bullshit for customers.

If my preferences are to benefit from it I don't feel special and no matter how much I know that the exclusive stuff is mostly trivial garbage not within the base game for a reason it feels like I'm missing out on something.

Like why doesn't everyone who bought a CE of Witcher 3 have the Gwent cards included. Was my money worth more than someone's getting it for PS4
well yeah, literally the marketing deal, but you get what I mean

Yeah there's no reason why they would stop. Some of the marketing has been very effective. I wouldn't be surprised if there's people out there who think games like Destiny and Star Wars Battlefront are PS4 exclusives.

Keep making good first party games that are diverse and I don't really care what you do with third parties (though exclusive content is kinda scraping the barrel). Reason I bought a PS4 and while its taken its time Im hoping we will keep getting more without any of the previous lulls...

If it aint broke...

They are leading home console sales right now. I'm sure 3rd parties want this.

No it really isn't.

So it's not a possible outcome for Sony's traditional game development to be affected by some first parties focusing on VR over traditional games? Sorry, but when I see Sony looking for third party deals, I get reminded of this summer/fall where they had no heavy hitters of their own.
