Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Not that I take responsibility but I'd say you should be fine for above console specs with that card. Remember Steam offers refunds...

I forgot about that....

Has anyone got rid of the stuttering without going borderless windowed?

If I'm not in borderless windowed the game keeps flashing between the image and a black screen, if it launches at all. Is that what you mean?

Also, changes I make in launch options don't get reflected in the ini and at times they seem to contradict. Have I fucked something up?

Running ultra + high god rays.

1440p monitor, 980, 16 gb ram, i5 4670k@3.40ghz, windows 10 pro.

I'm very impressed with performance so far! No visible drops to make me upset. Very happy I switched from xbox to this version at midnight launch.

I'm sorta confused why my game is locked to 48 fps. I just set my display to 120hz and it locked to 40. Do I accidentally have some sort of global vsync enabled? The game feels really unresponsive locked as it is.

I read anything over 90 causes glitches anyway.

Will be testing game on:

i7-4720HQ
GTX 980M
16GB RAM
SSD

I'm going to run it at 1080p Ultra, with High Godrays.

Played for a few hours.

Pretty much locked at 60fps the whole time, through Concord.

edit - also, no crashes, no stuttering

I don't want to go through this entire thread. I saw something earlier about needing to limit fps to 60 if you have gsync and a 144hz monitor? Why is that? How do I do that? I am installing now.
Apparent Gsync and in-game Vsync hate each other. Download rtss (it is offered together with msi afterburner) and use it to cap the framerate.
Wow, fucking awesome. Keyboard inputs have like a half second lag, mouse inputs have zero lag. Terminals 100% glitch on me, meaning the game is broken. This is fucking bullshit.

i7 2600k, 8GB RAM, 4GB GTX980, ROG PG278Q

Shit is broke and none of the fixes people suggest work.

Goddammit
What fixes have you tried?

Okay, so what exactly does borderless windowed mode do for performance compared to just the default full screen?

This is the first game where the default full screen ran like utter shit for me. Felt like major input lag and frame pacing problems, especially when strafing. For kicks, I tried borderless windowed mode and it's very smooth now.

Uh if I turn off vsync via the NVidia control panel the game starts to the start screen but I can't move anything using the controller or keyboard? Anyone running into this?

This is one of the first FPS games in a long time that makes me almost instantly feel nauseous, motion-sickness style. I'm only in the intro area! Even with practically locked 60 fps, any sort of strafing feels jittery, like panning a 24-fps movie screen. I'm trying to use D3DOverrider for triple buffering but that doesn't seem to help the feel looking around.

Is there some sort of mouse smoothing?

Maybe the FOV is part of it? I see mention of config changes, but I suppose there's no collection of really important tweaks yet.

There have been a few examples of this, but yes, bizarre as fuck. Maybe some whacked out process prioritization?

Since the Xbox One versuon kind of sucks , I think I will try to run it on my Phenom II 940 and my HD5850. Probably will work, because the resolution is not even Full HD on my monitor.

I actually suspect I know the problem on this one. If you have two monitors and move your mouse very quickly, you can see it flash on the desktop briefly before the game pulls it back. I don't think it's dedicated fullscreen at all! I've had a similar problem with the UE4 development kit where you could set either true exclusive fullscreen mode, or some sort of weird shared fullscreen mode.

I think Fallout 4 isn't using exclusive fullscreen and that's causing problems.

I've increased the FOV, but it looks like there's head bob when moving side-to-side. Head bob is like the #1 thing to give me motion sickness, e.g. STALKER, and I don't see anything in the config file to disable it. Nooooooo!

That's gotta be the messiest 60fps I've ever experienced. It feels like I'm playing a 30fps game where there are 30 unique frames being displayed twice every refresh cycle. I mean, 60 unique frames at 60hz don't (usually) leave motion trails/cause strobing like that when panning the camera. I've disabled the default vsync, enabled it through Nvidia Inspector and set a 60fps with RTSS, but it still feels terrible to play. It's actually making me queasy.

I think you nailed it. Good ups on UE4, I totally agree. I never thought about it until you mentioned it.

Maybe that's combining with the head bobbing for me. If there's any sort of console or config way to disable it, that'd be amazing. Otherwise I may actually have to refund and wait for a mod or something, if it makes me sick ingame.

Played for an hour and a half maxed out at 1080p and it runs beautifully for me. I really like the visual style and lighting in this game.

Can I get any help? Can't set a custom resolution for borderless windowed mode and the game only runs in borderless windowed mode. If I try fullscreen the game stutters between a black screen. I don't want to play this game with the corners of my desktop peeking out.

Any help? I know the thread moves fast but I've asked about this multiple times now.

I wouldn't unlock the FPS. It causes issues. I get stuck to computers all the time around 90+ FPS.

Might be worth unlocking to cap it in something like RIvatuner, might run better that way.

Well it definitely runs on my 5770, at low settings the framerate is not great with blurry textures. 4770k with 16 GB RAM.

I can't lock to 60 fps all the time on my 270x and can't find a good way of locking to a smooth 30 (RTSS stutters, double vsync too laggy). So I would like to opt for 50 fps via 50hz instead but having to set my monitor manually to 50hz each time I startup is a drag. Anyone know of any way to set refresh rate in the game or .ini?

Runs really smoothly except when I move and rotate the camera at the same time. That's when it stutters. Still reads ~60fps of course. Looks more like 10fps in those instances. Using a 360 controller.

60-90fps maxed on a 970, i5-3570k @ 4.2GHz. 60fps looks a lot less smooth than it normally does. I'm not sure about this, it's really odd.

Reached the first Raider place, some power plant, and in the immediate area before entering it the frames drop to 20-30ish, although nothing special appears on screen.

Edit: Maxed except god rays on low, lol

It's likely the stuttering. We'll have to wait for a quick fix or the official Stutter Remover that will be on the Nexus.

Game has already peaked at 290k concurrent on Steam so far, and its not even tomorrow yet, which it will peak way higher tomorrow evening.

Gonna sell some big numbers.

Game is running pretty well on my laptop.

GTX 970m
Intel Core i7 5700HQ
16 GB RAM

Everything on high, godrays low, TAA, SSAO on, and then all other features on like motion blur, lens flare, etc.

Definitely feels stuttery at times, though. Especially outside in battles. But it's not too bad, so I'll probably just roll with these settings.

edit: also, Xbox One pad is working flawlessly with Microsoft's new USB wireless adapter.

I alleviated my stuttering (not camera pan stutter but walk stutter - ie it would skip ahead when walking especially in the first vault) but by uninstalling Geforce Experience - seem to recall I did this with another game I had problems with (Skyrim?).

Playing at 1440p w/ G-Sync

Runs pretty good with everything maxed out (including god rays). Just left the vault. Was getting about 90-144 FPS up until this point. The game still runs absolutely fine out in the open, but I've seen it drop into the high 30's in densely wooded areas. It's not distracting enough with G-Sync to turn down god rays, but I may do that if it gets bad. Haven't been able to do a lot of exploration yet, but I'm tired as hell.
