Granted, I'd rather mess around with Sunshine's awesome controls than play 3D World again, but there's no denying it feels woefully unpolished and even incomplete in contrast to the rest.

It's also undoubtedly the weirdest fucking Mario game ever, which leads to hilarity unto itself (Mario goes to jail! You can kill birds by squirting water at them! I rescue NPCs from the slime and they throw me!) An HD uplift would have me insanely curious not just on what they'd improve on how much they'd retain all that craziness.

So is defense force just a word for 'group of people you disagree with' now

the first metal gear on nes did much better than the msx version and exposed the series to the west. it was so popular it caused konami to make snake's revenge for nes.

hideo then decided to make his own sequel, mg2 solid snake which was later remade as metal gear solid

so basically MGS franchise wouldn't exist without Snake appearing on NES

Seeing as how many 3D Mario fans are divided on which ones are the best, I suppose it's a good thing that Nintendo continues to try new things with Mario games.

My ranking:

3D Marios:

Galaxy 2 > Galaxy > Sunshine > 64

2D/quasi-3D Marios:

3D World > 3D Land > SMB 3 > NSLU > NSMBU > SMW > NSMB > SMB > SMB2

Alright we've debated Skyward Sword's controls, whether 3D World is a real 3D Mario or not, let's see...what do you guys think of Federation Force?

It'll be a fun game with a lot of TLC (because Next Level) that will get torn apart by the neckbeards on this forum because it isn't EXACTLY what they want. I expect tons of bitching without ever playing it.

That doesn't work that way, especially considering that Galaxy 2 plays just like 3D World with a bit of Galaxy fluff.

But Sunshine literally plays nothing like any Mario platformer, 2D or 3D - including 64. It really feels more like adventure-platformer of late 1990s-early 2000s than an actual Mario game - all because of level design and world structure.

And that's a shame since Sunshine has the best Mario controls ever. I would kill for any other 3D Mario game with Sunshine controls.

Haven't played 64 and Sunshine in a long time though, maybe it'd be 64>Sunshine if I played them again. Honestly even though they're at the bottom I'd prefer a 64/Sunshine style Mario to a "3D ____," one again, with the former it feels like there's still a lot of room to improve whereas I don't feel like we need another 3D Land/World game again. A Galaxy 3 that expands upon Galaxy 1 and 2 in terms of scope would be awesome though.

I'm not a fan of more open level design in general though. And even though Sunshine's controls are a ton of fun to mess around with thanks to the FLUDD (which is really why the game isn't at the bottom), as a kid I had a bit of a hard time grappling with the controls in 64/Sunshine.

Not really 3d world feels so darn cramped and unexplorable that they dont feel like worlds at all but like levels from a 2d mario game (Which I find extremely unmemorable). The Galaxy games have a sense of grandeur and soul to their levels, many of the places you go actually feel like its own little world unlike 3D world which always feels like going from point A to point B.

People saying 3D World/Land aren't 3D Mario are crazy. They are platformers, feature Mario and Mario is able to move in 3 spatial dimensions, therefore they are 3D Marios. Maybe the other 3D Marios had a lot more in common with each other than Land/World but that doesn't make them more 3D Mario.

My personal ranking is:
Galaxy 2 > 3D World > Galaxy > 3D Land > 64

World > Wii > Land 2 > 3 > U > Lost Levels > New > 1 > Land > New 2 > 2

Sunshine omitted as I haven't played it.
