Jetpack Joyride.
I'm not talking about ports to the mobile platform. Games like Chrome Trigger and Dragon Quest VIII don't count.
I'm talking about those games made specifically for mobile phones. Those which actually take advantage of a lack of buttons. Games which can literally be played in one minute bursts, but also satisfy hour-long play sessions if you are so inclined or compelled.
Jetpack Joyride, by Halfbrick, has it all. Quality visuals, attention to detail, fan service (the good kind), a deep sense of satisfaction, accessibility, quality unlocks and tight gameplay.
It was originally released on 2011 for iOS, but has since been released on most major platforms, and I am currently playing it again for the third time on my Galaxy S6.
It is a pure joy. The whole package reeks of quality. There is a tangible level of skill required to succeed at the game, and whilst there are IAPs to help you along, they are entirely unobtrusive and optional. A mission-based format keeps you engrossed as you rack up your coins and unlock gadgets, costumes and jetpacks. All complimented by subtle, wonderful animation and excellent music.
I love it.
It's not perfect. There could be a wider variety of missions, and there could be more unlocks. But it does come close, as far as playing games on my phone is concerned.
This new on-the-go, bite-sized mobile gaming genre has been inundated with titles of varying quality. Stage-based games such as Angry Birds and Cut The Rope are great examples of decent mobile titles that have taken the world be storm. Other great examples might be Deep Loot, Ridiculous Fishing and 10000000. All great games.
But Jetpack Joyride is the only game that has me coming back for more time after time. It has endless appeal.
Long live the king.
