Black Friday 2015 Retail Musings

When I went to Walmart, there were 0 ps4 bundles. When I went to Best Buy they had plenty of both, but I saw more people walking around with ps4 bundles compared to xbone bundles, and at target and GameStop I didn't see either.

on thursday night i went to target and noticed a few people with xb1's and the xb1 section in the electronics section was a bit more crowded than ps4.

i went in today and noticed that there were no ps4 uncharted bundles in the case and some xb1's left

if i had to take a wild guess based on reading this thread i would say xb1 won black friday but ps4 probably win the month because of the star wars and cod bundles.

bought 2 uncharted bundles online so +2 for sony.

watch sony win the month by 2 units :)

Went to the mall yesterday late afternoon mainly for the sporting goods store to consider some sports stuff for the nephew. With no real purchase intent, swung by Best Buy as well. Lots of Gears Xbox One bundles along the line leading to the registers, with some PS4 Uncharted bundles. Three Gears Xbox to one Uncharted PS4 was the ratio on the floor at that moment. But then there were also as many or more plain white boxed refurbed PS4s as the Uncharted, also $299...the mysteries of retail lol.

And yet the only consoles I actually saw being carried in line were a couple of the blue Xbox bundles, perhaps the Halo or sports bundles. Lines were reportedly crazy earlier in the day but not extensive when I was there.

I'll post pics in a bit when I get to my PC. Just left Best Buy. I was actually really surprised. There were 0 PS4s available in the whole store. There were stacks of the normal XB1 in the Xbox aisle, stacks of Halo and TR bundle in the PlayStatiom aisle and a bunch of Gears bundle, and a few others in the top stock. There was 1 very small pile of Wii Us left and 1 NSMBU bundle.

I made sure t take multiple pics of the XB1s clearly in the Sony section so there wouldn't be any question of agenda as most of the thread has been seeing XB1 selling more.

Nothing to do with morality, but 'borrowing' items from retailers hurts the retailer-->lower profits-->elimination of program + other consequences. It isn't far removed from shoplifting in terms of hit to bottom line (not morally). Remember when you had until late Jan to return stuff you bought in Oc/Nov? Thanks Wii u resellers for killing that.

I worked at Costco and our profit margin was high enough on all items to completely cover a return / resale. I can't speak for other places but the whole reason the terms of a return were listed as such was because you know a large percentage of returns were going to be customer losing interest or buyer regret. Amazon operates the same way. I've never actually done it but I don't think it's anywhere remotely within the same circle as shoplifting and its impact and people that make a big deal about it need to relax.

Went to Target, Walmart and Circuit City, couldn't find a single Xbox Tomb Raider bundle. Must be selling like crazy.

Pics from this morning at Best Buy(about 1045 am):

GH doesn't look touched at all. No surprise there. There wasn't any extra stock of them on Thursday(I asked). Anecdotally, the associate that I spoke with said they sold maybe 4 of them.
umMzBI1.jpg

The Xbox aisle(notice Xbox peripherals in the background).

The PlayStation aisle. As I said, they were completely sold out of PS4s. Light gray is TR, dark gray is Halo.

The last of the Wii Us.

Finally, the top stock.

I only went to one of the Best Buys in my area. No Game Stops. The 2 Walmarts had only 360s and PS3s that I could see, I didn't look too hard though(didn't want to annoy the wife much). I was very surprised when I entered, as I was fully expecting the opposite. I remember seeing some PS4s on the floor when I was there on Thursday evening, but don't know how many. The PlayStation aisle was full up of them at the least. I'm under the assumption from the associates working that both consoles had a ton of stock, with Sony having a bit more. I might go check another one just out of curiosity. Maybe I just like in a very pro-PS area or something, but I don't get that vibe at all from the average person on the street.

All games could be picked up off the stand, though some were definitely running a bit low. I only saw 2 copies of Battlefront PS4. There was plenty of BO3 and Fallout 4(probably were massively stocked). I got the last copy of Rare Replay, and AC Syndicate for $47 with GCU, pretty happy about that. There weren't very many copies of Forza 6 or any sports games. A good amount of NDC(surprise surprise), Destiny: TTK and AC overall. RotTR stock looked completely full. I should have snapped a pic of that. A bit sad, seeing as how virtually every other game had some evidence of missing stock.

The night of thanksgiving, we went to Kohls. Good amount of people. No fights or anything, but everyone was going for that Uncharted bundle (at Kohls.... Weird to me.) my girlfriend got a fitbit charge and we snagged a coffee maker for my grandma. She went to Walmart. I haven't heard any stories but she was able to snag some PS+ and two 40 inch tv's. Yesterday, we went for shoes, Bath and Body, and Gamestop. Shoes were fine, not that busy. Gamestop was PACKED. Everyone wanted a Fallout 4 bundle that they ran out of. We waited a good 10 or 15 minutes in line there, all because I couldn't skip The Old Blood for 10 bucks. Bath and Body was also insane. But 3 get 3 free, so I could barely move around in there.

Also picked up Until Dawn and Madden online on Best Buy, as well as Until Dawn (again) and Bloodborne for my buddy.

Quite an interesting conclusion to draw from "I'm under the assumption from the associates working that both consoles had a ton of stock, with Sony having a bit more".

Ah I was only going by the pictures. Just looked like they had none on the floor from those.

Any time they misjudge demand and not ship enough supply that's really what undershipped or understocked is though. It's not merely shipping more than the competition.

They're completely sold out. I know there were enough to at least clog up the middle of the Sony aisle on the floor(I almost slapped the shit out of this guy who rudely elbowed my 30 week pregnant wife in her stomach), as there wasn't much space around them.

Tomb Raider bundle, what were they thinking?

"Hey, we have this game no one wants and we will put it in a more expensive bundle so it will sell less!"

"Good idea boss!"

ms probably came up with so many bundles just to stuff the channels from the looks of it. man bb really are going to get stuck with those bundles unless there is a 50$ price cut to push stock closer to christmas especially with tomb raider lol.

What a punk. I think a knockout would have been in order.

Most of game shopping was online this year, although I did get a few Blu Ray deals at Best Buy. Target was incredibly disorganized and I tried to buy Boyhood for $6, but it came up as $12. The lady behind the register was combative about it and I tried very nicely to point out it came from a freestanding display and was marked at $6. I realized I was fighting a losing battle so I didn't get it.

I didn't bother with Walmart due to the perception I have of Walmart on Black Friday. I saw some anti-corporation punk rock dressed kids come in and tell people not to shop at stores like Walmart on Black Friday in a Walmart a few years ago.

In the Best Buy I went into, I about equal number of Xbox Ones and PS4s on the floor. I'm not sure I saw any Wii U's (if they were there, they didn't stick out). There were tons of Tomb Raider Xbox Ones that look like untouched.

You applied for a credit card on a whim in order to save $6? WHY?
Because at 43 and living full time in the US I do not have Any credit card to my name save for a Big O' Tire that I will now never use after our move, and even though my credit is ok I could use a small CC to even better it?

Who the F* cares really?

The anecdote really was that I lucked out on a $299 UC PS4 bundle doorbuster + $90 Kohls Cash at 9:30am on Black Friday.

I went to Toys R Us and Best Buy on Black Friday to get the Guitar Hero Live bundle and some toys for my son. From what I saw a lot of people were buying Xbox Ones and Fallout 4.

I instantly went from 0 to 100. Luckily she quietly reminded me that just scaring him a bit(I'm 6'4 280lbs) was better than being escorted out by those fine gentlemen in uniform.

It definitely feels like online is dominating these days. When I went back this morning there were still a ton of 40" TVs for $299 and some bigger/better sets with decent discounts still piled up. Overall the deals on TVs and laptops felt pretty shitty this year altogether.

No matter who wins this year, we all can see the real loser:

I was actually quite tempted to pick up the game, but seeing as I already have D3 season 5 upcoming, and about 30 games in the backlog between the consoles, I can't justify paying full price.....though I will be on a month of convalescent leave soon, so maybe!

From ZhugeEX's Twitter. PS4 was the highest grossing product at Best Buy during Black Friday.

If we're assuming that the Xbox One is the same price (there weren't any gift cards given with it right?) then it looks like PS4 outsold it at Best Buy at least.

Depends. There were multiple bundles and this looks like it's just naming the individual item that made the most money. As a whole they might've added up differently.

As in, what if it was like this:

1. PS4 Uncharted 4 units
2. XB1 Gears 3 units
3. XB1 Fallout 2 units
4. XB1 Tomb Raider 0 units

Works both ways - with BOPS and Star Wars bundles the PS4 also had an enticing selection of offerings available to the casual BF shopper

Don't forget the cod and two star wars bundles. they could be in there too.

I kind of wanted the XB1 bundle with Gears, Rare Replay, and Ori, but I had no plans to get another console after buying a PS4 earlier this summer and plenty of games up until yesterday
