Comedian Dave Chappelle seems to be fed up with people recording his shows and sharing his material on the Internet. Chappelle recently tapped tech startup Yondr, which makes cell phone cases that prevent people from using their phones, to help ensure audience members are more engaged during his performance at Thalia Hall in Chicago.

For Chappelle’s 13 sold-out shows at Thalia Hall, attendees will have to place their phones inside of Yondr’s smartphone sleeves before entering the venue, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Their phones will lock upon entering the phone-free zone, which presumably will be near the stage where Chappelle is performing.

I love it. "Be Here Now" indeed.

Sounds like gigantic pain in the ass.

If people are recording without having these sleeves on, how does this change anything? They'll still sneak a camera or get kicked out the same way they did before.

uh
if you have to leave it in the sleeve
how is that any different from just leaving it in your pocket?
that thing could just be made of normal material. how is it stopping your phone from working? you just have it in a slip case

it just means people who are determined to record the shows will do it through some other, more convoluted means.

Better question... Are they going to pat down people before entering the show? Because the obvious solution to circumvent this is to say they don't have phones with them.

How much more effective is this than having a simple phone check at the door like a coat check. Hand them your phone, get a ticket. When you leave, hand them your ticket, get your phone back. Seems so much more simple and low tech.

Comedians really hate this because they're testing out new material in these smaller venues.

Bill Burr complains about this all the time.

I got a crazy idea Dave, how about you get a couple of cameras, tape your stand up and sell them to Netflix or some shit. That way your fans don't have to go to extreme ways to get some content from you. You also get paid.

Call me for more info on this crazy idea.

What if I get an emergency call?

Not that the general idea is bad, but it doesn't seem prepared for every situation.

1. YONDR CASES As people enter the venue, their phones will be placed in Yondr cases.

2. LOCK Once they enter the phone-free zone, the cases will lock. Attendees maintain possession of their phones and are now free to enjoy the experience without distraction...

3. UNLOCK If at any point attendees need to use their phones, they simply step outside of the phone-free zone to unlock the case.

If this becomes a thing I really hope venues advertise it in big bold letters. I'd ask for a refund before putting up with this.

I saw him live a few years ago. They had 15+ people stationed around the room just looking for your phones. If someone took a phone out of their pocket one or more of them would quickly pounce on said person and force them to turn off their device.

Dave just spent 2 hours or so rambling on about various topics occasionally getting close to actually saying something funny but never getting there.

I can see why he doesn't want his stuff recorded.

Yeah and for some comedians their new material isn't that great which is why they do it over and over to refine it. I imagine the comedians hate seeing the 'rough' footage on youtube.

I never even take photos at concerts or shows, but I'd not be even a little okay with this. Aside from emergency purposes, I'm not going to put my property at risk of their technology failing.

so it's like the grocery cart wheels that lock up if you go out too far into the parking lot. I like it. if you have an emergency and need to use use or answer your phone then it's easy enough to go out into the lobby.

I think his point is not that the show is being shared, but that the audience is paying less attention to his performance because of their phones.

I think if you leave the area it unlocks. So presumably you'd go out into the lobby or something to take a call.

Wouldn't that result in the phone ringing even longer, since you have to leave the venue to turn off the ringer?

How would you know which iPhone is theirs? How would you know which HTC is theirs?

I have a flip phone so I don't give a fuck either way. The camera doesn't work on it anymore and it could only shoot 15 second videos anyway. I got tickets for tonight, fuck yeah. This shit sold out immediately when it went on sale, I'm glad they put more tickets up

Just for reference, this is his current policy:

"NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. ALL GUESTS WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THEIR CELL PHONES IN THEIR VEHICLES OR CHECK THEM AT THE VENUE."

People pirating his shows can really eat into his livelihood, so I get it.

Plus... it can get really annoying when people pull out their phones non-stop at concerts. I dig the idea.

it would go into a numbered cubby or something. that isn't hard to implement. but checking thousands of phones in and out would be a big hassle.

this solution means you're not going to lose your phone and you can still use it in an emergency.
