Uncharted 4 New Character Trailer: Nadine Ross (Laura Bailey)

I dislike the character for those same reasons. The flirty banter + "Oh wait, she can actually kick my ass" + 'Glad I can get out of these stupid high-heels and fight' thing is so done.

It's that typical, trope-ish way of showing her not be not your ordinary girl.

Maybe it'll make more sense in context, but I liked the character more as the military leader Nadine appeared to be in the concept art.

It's all entirely appropriate to the light hearted PG13 adventure tone of UC. Cliches, tropes, all that "comfortable stuff" is par for the course. I'm not huge on it, but it's -- well, yeah, comfortable.

RE: art style

I don't agree that it's entirely photorealistic. It still looks stylized. Look at her hair for example.

But I have to say the art style they created is kinda nuts. Because at times, in the faces especially like Drake's face here, it does look photorealistic.

Yet the overall look is still stylized at the same time. It's some kind of crazy and really impressive mix.

Yeah, it certainly fits Uncharted.

I'm sorry guys, I see lots of discussion here on Gaf (rightfully) calling it racist when someone says that a person "sounded black", and now you complain that you have a white person voicing a black character? People do or do not "sound black"? It they don't, why does the skin color of a voice actor matter?

Be consistent in your defenses, please.

EDIT: Btw, the character looks awesome.

I wouldn't really expect that since it seems like it's about to transition into gameplay. When the Uncharted 4 PSX panel was announced, Neil warned people that there would be spoilers, but not anything major. A boss fight would obviously be major.

Yeah, it seems to me like this boss fight is something ND would prefer to keep under wraps. Not only will it give away the story, it will also give away what could be a highlight of the game, in terms of gameplay. I really hope ND just releases a story trailer or a gameplay demo without a setpiece at PSX.

Boss fight? Really? This to me looks to be so early game it could very well introduce melee like one other poster said.

It still never ceases to amaze me how far ahead ND are in character animation and visuals then pretty much everyone else. Awesome little intro.
I really have missed Drake.

Is this a really common thing? Only thing I can think that has moments kind of like that is maybe Bond.

So swell guy Drake goes from mass murdering to beating up women?

jk

should still be voiced by russell crowe

Sad waking up to see the same terrible opinion repeated. For all you "this thread is a mess" that just sucks to see when people just want to see a little representation.

I'm for representation but that doesn't mean we throw fits over individual cases of a white person getting a role. While they may try to be diverse in their casting decisions, this is almost certainly a secondary consideration compared to going by just who seems to fit the role best. Trust me when I tell you that finding a voice that gels with the role is often (not always, but often) a belabored process, and it's based not only on actor actor chemistry but actor director chemistry. Plus, things in the design process are fluid and often change over time, for all we know the character wasn't originally black. There are so many factors that it just seems silly to be griping over this.

Naughty Dog is a diverse and progressive company. They cast a white person as a black character this time. Who cares.

You have some points I agree with but for your last point, I care.
It's fine that you don't but I have every right to criticize this decision that happens a lot. Ignore me and carry on with your day if this is how your going to "discuss"

This thread is the personification of the " is our society too politically correct? " in OT. Good. Lord

Drake is a lifetime combatant who has been beating the crap out of grown men for decades. Of course he is going to think he is a better fighter then a woman. Women are not generally seen as threatening. Hell look at Ronda Rousey and the shock people had over seeing her fight.

Games based on reality like this one is a mirrored reflection of our own society's thoughts and " tropes ". I guarantee you every single man in here would he shocked if they started getting their asses kicked by a woman

It's ok to want some representation or whatever, and ND has done well with it, but derailing a whole thread for one voice actress on something they have shown to be sensitive about is completely unnecessary.

They could've made the character white and have even less representation of black people, or they could've gotten a black voice actress if they thought it was the better fit, just like they did in TLOU and LB with 4 characters, but they didn't this time around for creative reasons, and there's no need to shit the thread because of it. We're on the 16th page and it's gotten old.

A pretty awesome character introduction has been put in the backseat for some unnecessary argument.

Thread makes a small fuss over the diversity of Uncharted 4... After the release of Naughty Dog's previous output which featured
the best written and most diverse cast of characters encompassing multiple ethnicities and sexualities
seen in the last few years.

Real talk, it's a Naughty Dog thread so people like to try and shit on the big dog in the pound (pun intended). The OT side of GAF does something similar with Christopher Nolan films.

Well for one I don't feel like I'm derailing the topic. I'm talking about the character's voice/mocap actress and my thoughts around that. A mod tell me to stop and I'll stop.

What the hell happened here. Is this really a controversy?

Come on people get a grip.
Get a grip on what? Sorry I'm discussing things you don't want to talk about?
Sucks that I have to. Seems like you guys are the only one mad about this.

What I want to know is, will Elana have to physically confront this badass woman? I can see her busting a cap in her Indy style rather than fighting.

Uncharted 4 now have three of my favorite VA.

If they somehow can cram Roger Craig Smith in there I would be very happy.

Laura Bailey playing a black British woman is.... odd.

But Laura Bailey is <3

I'm ok with this.

The character isn't British, pretty sure she's South African.

Which is were I'm having a disconnect with the blowback here. The focus has been entirely on ethnicity, a black VA should voice a black character. But I've seen almost no comment on what nationality that VA should be. I'm assuming that most people are defaulting to American. But whether they were black or white, an american actress would still be imitating the cultural and national identity of the character.

Sounds like a wasted opportunity to not make this a boss fight. We know that Nadine is supposed to be an antagonist and this trailer shows us that she can do some serious ass kicking, so the gameplay opportunities are vast.

People are concerned about him fighting back? No. If you're getting a beat down it's fair game. Not that I think the outcome is going to be anything less than Drake getting his ass kicked. Her stance and bobbing makes me think she's had martial arts training, and she certainly looks like she can pack a punch.

But who's saying this is the only time you'll get to fight her?

I agree with that, Drake is getting too old he needs to go home and be a family man. She'll probably wipe the floor with him.

Bailey herself talked about it on Critical Role this evening as well.

That was awesome, since I was tuned in to the Awards show right up until the Iwata tribute started, and when I saw Laura Bailey in an audience shot at the Awards, I was like "Aww...I guess she's not going to be on CritRole tonight!" A few minutes later, while they were doing the Iwata thing, I switched over because it was finally "Thursday yet," and a little after the top of the hour and time for the show.

As soon as I change channels on the Twitch stream, I hear, "we're waiting for Laura" and think "this is going to be a long wait..."

Then, just a few minutes later, there she is, rushing in, still in her cocktail dress from the Award show, (which was still totally going on when she arrived at CritRole,) sitting down and getting right into playing some D&D. She must've literally RUN out of the Awards show as soon as her bit was done to make it on the CritRole set that quick.

I love how dedicated the players on CritRole are to the show and their characters. Like how Ashley Johnson is Skyping in from the East Coast where she's filming her primetime NBC show, and staying up LATE to play D&D on CritRole. The last time Ashley was on previous to last nights episode it was one of those "oh it's Midnight here, that means it's 3AM on the East Coast...when do you have to be on set?" -- "My call time is at 6AM!" things. That really made me like Ashley a lot more than I already did from her work on TLOU.

The guys from Crit Juice (the other D&D podcast I listen to) also sometimes do this, with gigs/auditions the next morning. But it's even worse for them because their central show gimmick is mixing D&D with a listener-interactive drinking game, so they all get HAMMERED on booze while playing. Some of the resulting hangovers have to be epic. But they don't tape on a regular schedule like CritRole either.

Uh...

That isn't what people are arguing about in this thread.
