I just saw the trailer again. Instead of filling me with awe, it now fills me with sadness. The whole day was shitty because of this news, and I read it yesterday... I don't think any game has ever affected my emotional level this much. Why Square. Why.
Not only sooner but a better quality product. I think I'm fine with the whole thing. If each "Volume" is offering a full game experience, sure. Why not.

Er.... I don't know if "added" content, no one asked for means "better quality"... :X
Was the hobbit a "better quality" because of one book being turned into 3 "full" movies?

It took me half-an-hour to get brave enough to get into battle with the damn thing the first time I saw it. (I died very quickly, of course.) It creeped the hell out of me.

The Hobbit is a terrible comparison because the original source material wasn't enough for 3 movies. 2 was the original plan but Peter Jackson felt like he needed to pull unnecessary crap from The Silmarillion and LOTR appendices to make The Hobbit "complete".
Oh wait but there's Advent Children, Genesis, Crisis Core...
Forgetting that...Considering how big the original game is, I don't think 3 games is unreasonable given that FF7R could be even bigger if:
-dialogue is fleshed out
-each area is expanded, detailed, and fully realized
-each game "stacks" so you can revisit old areas in Part 2, Part 3, etc.
(RIP 500GB HDDs)
-open world is replaced with large Witcher 3/FFXV interconnected zones
-each game is 30-50 hours

1) I don't disagree that FF7 is one game, but after playing through the PS4 version recently I feel like there is so much that could be added.
From the beginning to when the sector 7 plate falls, when
Jessie, Wedge, Biggs all die
, is maybe one to two hours into the game, which includes Don Corneo's Mansion, meeting Aeris, Aeris' house and mom, two reactor raids, multiple boss fights, three different sectors of Midgar, etc. In a modern game that could be fleshed out into a much longer sequence. If that's what they're aiming for with the Remake then I'm 100% behind it.
2) That's why I think the "zones" idea would be much better conceptually than an open world or world map. It allows the devs to focus on making each area unique and filled with content, while eliminating many of the problems true open world games face with bugs, loading/streaming issues, etc.
3) For me, Genesis is to FF7 as Tom Bombadil is to The Hobbit. Hopefully if it's in there it's 100% optional
EDIT: more on the first point:
FF7 has over 107,000 lines and 600,000 words of dialogue and at times feels rushed. For comparison, FFXIII has 18,000 lines and 130,000 words and Crisis Core has 5,000 lines and 30,000 words. That to me is insane.
This looked so amazing. I was not expecting to see gameplay this early. Visually, it looks just as stunning as FFXV, and the combat looks similar to XV/Versus as well. Can't wait to be able to play this.
Wow, the cutscenes really are rendered in real-time. I honestly thought it might be pre-rendered, but looking at high-quality screens the flaws are clearer. Very impressive.
Can't wait to download the high quality trailer from GamerSyde. Props to them.

Aw, man, I hope it doesn't end up on land. The atmosphere of fighting it at the bottom of the ocean was incredible, even though it was hilariously impractical in retrospect! Emerald Weapon (and the rest of the Weapons in general) do make me quite curious how it'll work with new combat system. I wonder if they'll be something like the Titans in Kingdom Hearts, just on a much larger scale?

I hope this gets fully orchestrated versions of all the music. They could rip some of the stuff directly from the Distant Worlds albums (like in the trailer) and I'd be 100% okay with it.
Edit: I suppose more specific way to put it is, I hope they don't jump to guitars and electronic stuff right from the get go. Yes, some of the tracks use it, or could make good use of it, and yes, I actually like the Advent Children interpretations of the VII OST, but I think a full orchestra would be more appropriate for the Remake.

I was thinking the 'Underwater' materia would just create a big air field for you to fight in. Still ridiculous that you don't just fire torpedoes at it from your sub XD

The discontent I have with the episodic format is this:
FF7 did very challenging and unprecedented things for the time of its release. Its team was working with all-new technologies for the first time.
FF7 Remake does not. Among AAA titles, it neither has the best graphics, nor could it be the largest if it really follows the original, nor is it an open world simulation with emergent gameplay that needs to be excruciatingly QA'd. They do not need to build an engine, they do not need to write a scenario. Beyond that, they get to skip a lot of the game design process just because it is a remake
In 201X, FF7 is not a title which should require 4+ years for a AAA developer (I am sure it will be that long before we see the all-episode+costume DLC package). The episodic releases are much more like "Part 2s" for The Hunger Games 3/Harry Potter 7/Avengers 3milking a cultural phenom for everything it is worth, by splitting a single product into multiple.

They're going to have a hard time cutting it from the game. As we all know there are some real MAJOR plot devices tied to that section of the game. We're going to have to have access to the sub and we're going to need to be able to explore that ocean if they're recreating everything. To try anything else would mean completely changing a rather large and very important part of the game.
The encounter itself may change a bit of course or even be scripted into the plot, but I wouldn't expect it to take place anywhere but its original location.
and i was thinking about all the weird monsters and enemies in the original game and how they would translate to the remake. i mean, there is some WEIRD stuff..

Well I think we can already add Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge to that group, no way they just got voices for the trailer IMO. I think characters on their level particularly if they have interactions with the main party are going to get expanded.
What I like about Cloud in this game is it looks closer to the portrait art from the original game. I feel like all of the other Cloud models has made him have a softer expression. This game's model seems to be trying to give you that same reaction every character gives Cloud when they see him. His eyes.

In that one shot, it looks like it's flabby and beset with cellulite, then in others it looks completely emaciated. I guess it must just be the fault of the lighting.
