you know you don't have to make those images anymore right
Not a fan of the official ones, honestly. Lots of wasted space, and just the map layout without a preview or screenshot is not always the best way to present a level.
Also, since the layout is done, making one is just a matter of slapping name, picture and description in there.

Here's the bookmark for The Great Goomba Trench.

Very well done, this is why I love water levels. It should flow nicely!

It's been a while since I've been here. Finally have a new level up.
Bookmark Link: Red or Green

Give it a whirl, let me know what you think, and send me a bookmark for a course of yours!

A challenging Shoot Them Up course. I took the red path and got it on my first try, the bumper gauntlet was very tough.

Made a pretty short and easy level this morning primarily out of curiosity to see what the skill level is like of the general MM community (I get the sense it's not a high skill level) and also because my first level was way harder than I ever thought it would be.

Yoshi's Plight

Poor Yoshi.

Got it on my first try, but I think the majority of the Mario Maker community will not get the Yoshi jump.

My latest: Yoshi Island's Mushroom Peaks!

I had an idea for a little element in a level made possible by the latest update and I decided to build a level that would suit it. I figured I haven't given Yoshi enough love, and I also wanted to challenge myself, trying to make a level that was fun but much easier than my usual fare. I'd like to think I succeeded, but of course that's for you guys to decide! It's only got one playthrough, but I'm hoping I hit something like a 40% rate on this one. Let's see how I do.

Since a lot of you are new to the game post-Christmas, if you're looking for a level that's a bit tougher, my level Bounce on Big Bob-omb! is one I'm very proud of that went up months ago, so maybe give that a try.

Put together a new level finally. I've played around with this gimmick before but I've never really been happy with the progress and have just scrapped previous attempts, but finally it all clicked. Amusingly part of it was switching theme. Originally it was a SMW grass level but switching it to NSMB castle seemed to suit it better. As a bonus this marks my first proper castle as well so now I finally can be the final level of someone's 100 Mario run.

Cling 'n' Climb Castle
2387-0000-0146-1F56_full.jpg

Grab a vine and travel along the rails avoiding the obstacles. (Think SMW's cheese bridge) There are the usual three 1-ups.

I see this as about a midway game level. So not too difficult but not a complete walk through the park. Of course by the end of it I could easily beat it without a single hit, but that's because I knew the perfect route. Hopefully I managed to keep a nice balance despite that since it's so easy to think something is too easy after you've playing is a zillion times.

I really, really liked this level. I'm a total sucker for this mechanic and you nailed it. The exception: the encounter with Bowser. It's a bit too tough right at the end, and it's easy enough to grab a mushroom at the checkpoint and then just tank your way over the pile of spikes and past Bowser. It sucks, but I couldn't quite crack that last bit and I cheated myself out of the grand finale. I'm guessing a lot of other people will too.

ISuSfA3.jpg

The Big Short

Wanted to try my hand at a thumbnail level. There's only 30 seconds on the clock to beat this one!

This is both my favourite level based on a Michael Lewis book and my favourite level inspired by the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis.

Seriously though I'm not big on the one-screen challenge room levels but this is tightly made and fun. I have no idea why it's got such a low complete rate, it's not nearly that hard.

Yeah, I'm super confused by that too. 1% clear rate makes me think someone who didn't know how to spin jump and spent 100 lives trying anyway.

Gotta say I grew a bit bored and moved on to your next level. A flag at the end of the first section would have kept me going.
Charge! Shoot the Core!
This level was much better and was quite fun. The quick pace made it exciting. In the second part I would suggest perhaps a longer bridge to get into the clown car because I got pushed off and died immediately. Wasn't really a big problem since you hit the flag automatically though.

MTW 1-1
Great introductory level to your set
MTW 1-2
Difficulty ramps up a little bit and there's some fun secrets.
MTW 1-3
Easily the best of the three. I loved the little marks showing where thwomps were falling and the boss was an implementation I'd never seen before and it was executed very well. Awesome level.

This bookmark system is so awesome. So much easier to quickly play other peoples' levels. I'm excited about getting back and making new levels now too because other people might play them more!
Here’s some of my previous levels if anyone wants to take a look:
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/profile/Awgner07
Red or Green: Grab the fire clowncar early, or be resigned to the green path.
Journey to the Waterfall: Link battles through cave and dungeon. Enjoy!
Use the Star Speed Mario-Kun: Mario-Kun, they key to success is star speed!
Fort of Fragmentation: Not all is as it seems the first time around!
Grand Ghost Galleon: Progress is halted four times; enter the ship to continue up above.
The Mushroom Kingdom: Journey to the mushroom kingdom. Some medium/hard jumps.
Mushrooom Liberation: Follow-up of The Mushroom Kingdom. It’s now under attack. Rescue it!
A Dreary Night: Raiding the Tomb: Careful at the beginning, the weather is deadly.
Escaping the Martian Menace: Red Herring start. Slower-paced, a little backtrack section.

I was going to make "a couple of edits" to one of my levels and ended up almost completely re-building it. Tried to make it fair and more of an 'advanced' challenge rather than an 'expert' challenge. But obviously difficulty is hard to judge on your own.

If you like pure platforming levels, try it out!

Hey guys. My brother and sister and I made this level over Xmas. I'd really like to see what you guys think of it. It's my hardest level yet, but still not that bad.

Let me know what you think.
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/27CF-0000-0149-66FF
Too much trial/error gameplay for me :p Several situations that seem very difficult to get through on a first attempt. But I did find some pleasure in beating it so there's that!

Every time I turn on the game and look at my notifications it's like "30 people have played your 1-1", "10 people have played your 1-2", and then like 3 or 4 people will play the rest of my courses.

I know the first few courses are rough, but are they that bad that playing them makes you instantly not want to play the rest of my courses? Should I just take them down? Remake them? Then my courses will be out of order on my Maker Profile...

What should I dooooooooo?

Just wanted to repost my level now that the bookmark finally is finally on the website.

I present Volcano Peak. I wanted to try a theme we mostly haven't seen much of (I've only seen 1 other one) and I think I did a decent job in presenting the idea. This is a medium difficulty level with a large focus on fire and flame enemies and obstacles. There are a few tricky parts but I mostly think it's manageable. Looking for as much feedback a possible as I try to shake the rust off. Let me know what you think :)

Ok how do make enemies walk a path on blocks without falling off ? I used that line tool but then you have that ugly line behind them. And how do you make koopa troopas with wings fly in an up and down path , when I do it they just fall down to the ground.

It depends on the enemy. Shake a green Koopa to make it red. Red Koopas will turn around when they reach a ledge, and will also fly up and down when given wings.

Neat idea. I found the red path to actually be more difficult, despite the weapon advantage.

I have a request: I spent a fair amount of time making a couple levels that haven't seen many players.

The first is a level with no enemies, just hazards, pits, and platforms. It has 0 clears I think it's pretty fair but obviously I made it so who knows. I'm real interested on feedback for this one.

Pure Platforms No Enemies

And the other I posted here but my timing may have been off. It's a Shoot 'Em Up styled level that hopefully teaches you everything you need to know about the shooting Clown Car.

Charge! Shoot the Core!

Your first level in particular suffered from sections that are too difficult to react to on a first playthrough. The falling platforms in particular were annoying when they are off screen and you don't know what you are jumping to. Besides that both were fun. This is personal preference, but I hate levels where I have to keep dying to learn all the tricks and traps. I would say do your best to let the player know what is coming.

Yesterday, after a very long time, I made a new level.

The First Second Of Eternity
V7qVn0A.png

It's based on a recent episode of Doctor Who, "Heaven Sent" from series 9 (2015), whose basic concept seemed quite gamey to me. So, if you haven't watched it, beware: this level contains significant spoilers for the episode.

That was fantastic! I like how you made all the nods to the episode and worked them into a mario level. Very, very clever!

I don't remember the level from Yoshi's Island very well, but I enjoyed your take on it. Bounce on Big Bob-omb! really felt like it came straight out of Super Mario Bros 3. There were a few section that seemed a little too close for comfort with the auto-scrolling but I made it through.

Just wanted to repost my level now that the bookmark finally is finally on the website.

Ahh, it's actually an all-original level, not a remix or anything like that. I just thought with it being Super Mario World and wanting to make Yoshi very prominent in it, that might be a nice title. There is a level in Super Mario World with a lot of pits and a very airy feel, but it's a much different stage.

Thanks for your kind words on the other stage!

Was that Bowser's Hot Pursuit? The guy who beat my record (boooo) actually appears to be from Sweden unless you mean another 20 sec based staged you happen to have? Anyways, yeah, I actually find it infuriating when someone does a world record clear on a stage of mine but doesn't star it, has happened several times.

It's also very irritating that the number one Star ranked creator on the server is a girl from Japan who makes nothing but thumbnail troll levels.

It's just a dumb little level that's really damn difficult. It mostly just uses three pieces (bouncing donuts, chains comps and the rails) though there's a power up at the start and some blocks at the end.

Just took back the World Record for Bowser's Hot Pursuit, 20.630, BOOM. Take that, you unappreciative Swedish punks.

Ran through this one slowly and will definitely come back to it. Can see it getting addictive.

Edit: Came back and snatched the record with 20.544 then nipped a touch more off to end up with 20.539. Great level, just spent like half an hour playing it over and over.

Thanks for the feedback. I knew something was off with Pure Platforms but I couldn't put my finger on it. The opening is a little too auto scroller, basically a lot of wasted space. It's tough to have something "above" the camera I tried using the arrow for guidance but maybe donut blocks or something would get the same point across before the actual dropping platform jump.

Glad to hear folks like Shoot the Core. I'm planning on a series of Shmup levels now that I can upload more levels.

It wasn't bad, but I have a suggestion. If you ever have an area that requires a blind fall or jump, you need to indicate what the player has to do. You do end up seeing the lower platform at the beginning, but I think a lot of people will miss it.

I have a few general tips too. I suggest waiting until you unlock everything. Play all the 10 Mario courses too. Check out the top recommended levels and those posted here too. It will give you a much better idea of how to use the tools in unique ways, plus if you have everything unlocked you won't feel limited.

One last thing. Keep the difficulty of your level in mind. What you make will be much easier for you than people playing it for the first time. Your level you posted wasn't too difficult though, so it's just a preemptive warning. All my tips here are based on the exact same mistakes I made. Good luck, and I look forward to seeing more from you.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback!

Thanks :) Glad you enjoyed it. When I build a level I always try to make it look visually appealing and unique but I try to never sacrafice playability. I had this level sitting on the burner unfinished for a month because I couldn't figure out what to do with it. So the fact that you thought it played well feels good. I wasn't sure how the volcano climb was gonna go over. Lotta Xs all around the very first volcano in the level.

As far as getting stars from people is concerned I have 3 general tips.

1. Advertise your levels here and on R/MarioMaker. You'll get good feedback and normally a star if your level looks as though you put in effort.

2. Try to nake your levels visually appealing. That doesn't mean throw shit everywhere but like, add things to keep the player engaged and interested in what they are looking at. Mario games generally have something level design wise going on every screen.

3. Ease your difficulty. Nothing wrong with good tough levels. But your opportunity for stars is directly correlated with how many people finish your level. If someone can't finish it 9/10 they aint gonna star it after saying "naw b, fuck this". Just be aware before you make a level whether you actually would like to acquire some stars. Again I wanna stress, your syars are almost always correlated to your clears. I encourage everyone to check. You can make the most interesting fun stuff but if barely anyone can clear it for w/e reason, you cripple your star chances.

Generally speaking following those 3 citeria has helped my star count a lot. The negative is that doing so lowers your level output because you gotta playtest a lot.

It was Yoshi Island's Mushroom Peaks. Bowser's Hot Pursuit was my most recent before the last update, I've done two levels since then.

I spend a ton of time making sure most of my levels are as fun to speedrun as they are to play normally, so I'm really happy to see you guys getting a kick out of setting new WRs! Sometimes it felt like a wasted effort, especially before the WRs were built into the game.

A fun little level, I was actually really surprised to see the finish. I didn't know it was so short!

I liked that there was a wide variety of obstacles. The course definitely got better as it went along. My favorite section was the one right before the end.

My first serious attempt at a thematic (costume) level, starring Blathers from Animal Crossing. The level is called Blathers' Fossil Quest and I aimed for an easy to medium difficulty, make everything look cave-like with contraptions that provide you with items and there's a region in the center through which you go three times a la Yoshi's Island.
[url]https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/1EFA-0000-015A-326E
Very fun level! However, I found a little thing that can make it impossible to move forward (luckily it's right next to the flag so you can kill yourself and continue). After hitting the p-switch that you access with the red turtle, you kind of have to jump up quickly because the green turtle shell is still bouncing around below. I jumped up quickly to get to the vine but accidentally landed in front of the door by the vine and hit up trying to get the vine. I went through the door and then didn't have time to go through the coins before they turned back to blocks. Like I said, I guess that's not too bad since the flag is right there. Love the detailed environment in the level.

I'm usually a big fan of your levels, but to be honest I didn't like this one a lot.
I'm aware it's kind of the point, but the level sometimes felt messy to navigate, and in some instances I wasn't really sure if I was going where I was supposed to.

Today I played through your levels, and found each better than the previous one (nice progression there). This was probably my favorite overall, with the secrets in the outdoors part being its main highlight. Good stuff.

Nice work! Small but neither impossibly hard, nor relying on exploiting obscure godforsaken mechanics (like most thumbnail levels I've played). I'd play more levels like this.

Came across this level "The Insidious Iron Star" while doing an expert 100 mario challenge.

Liked it a lot! Lengthy, interesting and never cheap. Suggested play.

This level has been on the backburner for a while but I decided to finally upload it as is. Tell me what you think.

This was pretty hard. That one part with all the fire spitting piranha plants was nuts, like it was some kind of bullet hell game. I'm not quite sure how I was supposed to get past the part with all the tubes shooting fire without taking damage. It was fun with some interesting ideas. I liked the use of those flying bob-ombs.

I actually started working on a level a lot like this, but was trying to make it exclusively Buzzy Beetles for platforms. It was way too difficult to do with the limited tools, but it gave me another idea where I can salvage it at least in part.

Anyway, your level was good. Trying to get past some obstacles like the up and down platforms felt a little messy. The spike tops were a bit counter intuitive. I assumed yoshi would bounce off the top, and I ran off the first one into a pit. That's not your fault though. Overall it's a decent flying buzzy level. It's way better than what mine would have been.

Been quite awhile since I've posted a course here, but I've been back into the game pretty heavily lately so it seems like high time to share a new course.

Ghosts Don't Quit

2A4E-0000-0158-5898_full.jpg

This course, like most of my courses, has no real gimmicks and it's not made to be particularly pretty, it's just all about the platforming. If you know what you're doing, you can get through this course very, very quickly.

Ghosts Don't Quit is a light sequel to Ghost Pit.

A10B-0000-0037-EC30_full.jpg

Ghost Pit is an older course of mine, but it's one of my favorites and, again, just focuses on pure platforming.

I'd love to hear any feedback, positive or negative on these courses, and if you like 'em, I'd really appreciate a star. I'm currently working toward the 300 star benchmark, but since the average Mario Maker player refuses to give out stars unless the level draws a Splatoon character or plays the Final Fantasy theme song, it'll take me around a year to get there at my current pace.

A new level I had a lot of fun creating. A straightforward ghost-themed level with guardian magikoopas, fancy rides, and some fun alternate paths.

I thought this was pretty fun. There were some parts that did throw a lot at you, but it's not too hard to avoid hits if you go patiently. The boss room was a bit underwhelming and the final thwomp seemed out of place. Overall, though, it looked great and played well.

Could I get an opinion for Spinbounce Spikeway? I thought it was a hard but fair level, but apparently the only player to try it has died 24 times and hasn't been able to beat it :(

Also Deadblock Dryway, which uses hidden question blocks but might have turned out too easy to beat.

1D53-0000-0154-0C92_full.jpg

All my levels are usually fairly short, but they have three hidden 1-ups in question blocks in lieu of star coins, if you're up for some extra challenge. Come on, Nintendo, give me star coins!

Extra: Back to the piranha is an experiment with doors in autoscrolling levels, and seems to be fairly well-liked.
