Gears of War 4 - hopes, fears and expectations

Great notes from everyone here. Will be sharing this thread with others. Thanks and keep em coming!

Glad to see someone from the team on the forums.

While I'm sure you can't say much more than 2016 to any question I might ask - I'll ask anyway - will we be getting any new information soon? The wait is killing me. :p

Huge gears fan. Been playing since Eday in 06.

If the multiplayer is anything like judgement I'll probably never touch it. I'll understand if they try make it more accessible for new players because it is a difficult game to get into nowadays. There's a huge skill gap in Gears and a hell of a learning curve.

I'm not too worried though. No matter what they do to the MP in Gears 4 I can still play UE in all its glory.

Gears 3 was great but the attempts to make the game easier and more accessible just lessened the skill factor. Which is pretty unavoidable to be fair.

For Gears 4, ideally all I want is:

The Gnasher from UE
All MP skins fron previous games
Of course cog v locust or whatever else for MP
No vertical bullshit from judgement
Shotgun rifle Pistol smoke grenade starts for everyone
Free maps and monetise gun skins
Dedicated servers and 60fps for multi

And for the love of god don't fuck up the gameplay. Do what made gears great, no rifle fests, make the shotgun the utility weapon and balance everything else behind it.

Great!

I think the last few posts have brought up something that I can't emphasize enough (for me, personally, of course):

REQ packs, burn cards, consumables, and other modifiers are a monumentally ruinous idea for what Horde mode is supposed to be -- EVEN if they aren't at first tied to microtransactions.

Resist the temptation! Resiiiisssttttt!

People give a lot of shit to Judgment, but it did some things right like the Markza. Best weapon added in Gears since the first game that I'd really like to see return. It improved ranged combat and wasn't OP because it took skill to use. Honestly reminded me of the Halo 1 Pistol or DMR with less aim assist, which is a good thing.

I'll say something else, which I'm sure will rub some up the wrong way, but scrap ranked. No one plays it, the wait times are horrendous and it splits up the community.

Edit: in response to above - Judgment is a much better game than people give it credit for. It had a lot of great ideas.

The beta is due in Spring so we can't be far off some info...

I bet there is a Game Informer article on it soon which gives us some juicy details

So putting maps/modes behind paywalls and dividing the community is more preferable? What am I reading? I thought we'd moved on from that shite.

REQ pack-type stuff on Horde could work really well, with cosmetic unlocks to PvP. Bringing out the right REQs at the right time in Horde would make a bigger tactical difference than in Warzone. I fully expect that implementation, actually.

Or maybe people should just stop being so cheap. Creating maps etc costs money.

The Gears Games got a lot of great Content over the years, hell i even recently bought the All Fronts Pack for Gears 2.

If you want new quality content pay for it.

I mean look at this way. Joe 1 wants new maps and modes for the game, but he doesnt want to pay for it.
Joe 2, pays money for RNG Packs to support "free" content. Joe 1 gets his free content in form of 1 map and maybe some skins.

A traditional Addon would be like 3 maps, 1-2 new modes and some new skins/characters.

You can already see it in Halo 5s Free content. Its laughable.
Forge Maps, 1 or 2 Dev made Maps and some weapon/armor skins per Pack. If you dont count the Forge Maps, its a very lackluster "Free" DLC. And this Warzone Map was seen in a trailer before Launch...

And im someone that doesnt really care about the character customization stuff. I rather have way more Maps per Addon than some pointless skins. And and in H5s case you are not even guaranteed to get this new skins, thanks to the RNG crap.

Sure there is always this "dividing the community" issue. But you are not forced to buy DLC.

@Overrun
Was that the mode with the different classes? Dont remember much about Judgement at all xD

Judgement was a disaster. Worst gears game by miles. It's the Halo 4 of the series.

As for ranked, it's all I played untill the stupidly decided to move King of the Hill to social. That's great if people want to play social, they should have a place to kick back and relax and just play.

But pooling everyone together is a bad idea. Gears can be a competitive game and people enjoy taking it seriously. Mixing everyone together just means less serious players get stomped and stop playing.

Edit TC are reading this thread? Scrap the retailer exclusive character skins. Such fucking horseshit in Gears 3 onwards.

If you guys go the route of req packs or microtransactions or whatever, don't fuck up and put characters behind paywalls. Gun skins all day, Gears 3 showed people will pay for gun skins. But if characters are locked behind paywalls and pre orders and all that shit, well it'll just make the choice to keep playing UE instead even easier.

That sounds absolutely terrible. Lord.

My main hopes are for a solid, well-paced, fun campaign that refreshes the series and adds cool mechanics to the basic TPS formula. A Horde mode absolutely and 100% free of consumables, burn cards, or any type of RNG save for at worse cosmetic items. If they can nail that, I'm totally in.

Oh believe me, I'd rather not have that stuff at all. But putting it in a Horde mode of some sort, avoiding MP, and giving away maps to everyone is the lesser of two evils.

I actually can't say I agree (I typically do for other multiplayer games though, to be clear).

But in the case of Gears, I'll pay for maps before ruining Horde mode.

I hope so. I am sure it'll have a big coming out party but it's been a painfully baron year for information. We've seen more of Horizon and The Last Guardian than we have Gears of War 4.

I know I'm being impatient but this is probably coming out in 11 months and we know nothing - it's just frustrating. News on the beta would be great at this point.

Judgment was botched but some of its ideas were solid in their own right.

I understand your point about ranked but if a decent skill-based matchmaking system was in place it would alleviate those issues. As a day one player (like myself) I'm sure you'll testify to dwindling population numbers and too many playlists.

Playlist consolidation is part of the answer but it's not enough. Let's not even start with stacked teams either. It's a tough one.

lol yup, it's the mode people have been wanting since Horde released but many forgot existed because Judgment lol

It's a brilliant mode with a ton of potential. Hopefully it returns.

The issue with Overrun is it needs its own maps. It was a good mode and could be something great if given the development time but you have to imagine it's behind the campaign, multiplayer and horde in the pecking order.

Sadly I don't think we'll see it again.

I think there's only room for one Horde-type mode in the game, though. And if it's a choice between Overrun and straight up Horde, it will always be the latter for me.

They dont usually show off there big sequels so early like they did at E3 this year so that was a bonus.

Also TLG isnt a particularly good example given its about 10 years old, have patience, they will show it to us soon

It just needs to be a continuation of the mechanics in Gears 3. I don't even want to play UE when I can just play 3. The multi in that game is nearly perfect. They can do whatever with the campaign, PvE modes and OverRun. Probably won't touch the campaign.

Ha very true. I suppose The Last Guardian fans had a bit longer to wait than I probably will.

It would be cool if we could create our own COG/Locust for multiplayer, with face editor, customized armor, skin and all this shit

And that money from optional microtransactions will be used to support a community with free content instead of gatewalling DLC and non-DLC owners! Paid multiplayer map DLC doesn't work, at all. Ever.

The Gears Games got a lot of great Content over the years, hell i even recently bought the All Fronts Pack for Gears 2.

The first DLC pack for Gears 3 fucked the servers and making the dedis be gatewalled behind buying a map pack no one wants. I'm honestly surprised the Gears 3 community is still going strong after being thrown to the shadows by Epic for like two years until The Coalition came to fix the servers.

If you want new quality content pay for it.

Is your argument essentially "you don't get a lot of free update content if you choose to do microtransactions for multiplayer games?" What backwards argument is this? Have you seen Garden Warfare's updates? TF2?

The games' been out for two months. Do you know how long it took for Halo 4 to get DLC after launch? 3 months to get an actual pack of content not gatewalled by specializations bullshit. Who gets upset over free content? I'm actually impressed that a person like you, known for speaking for competitive balance in shooters both on GAF and Twitter would even say something like:

Sure there is always this "dividing the community" issue. But you are not forced to buy DLC.

when that's not true at all. Multiplayer shooters don't have the community strength to have a content that's paid-for. Look at how Titanfall flopped and made it's DLC free with the quickness. Look at all of thse new shooters -- Evolve, Rainbow Six Siege, Halo 5, Garden Warfare 2 -- are making all of their map content free. They want a community to foster and you're damn sure not going to do it by gatewalling multiplayer content.

also make sure the shots come out of barrel of the Gnasher

This affected me SO much in Judgment and UE.

Straight up, keep it 100% like Gears 3 speed/gnasher shots/movement/KOTH map design and I'll be there.

This is blasfemous to say, but I want more than just a flat square riddled with waisthigh covers. I want a new dimension to Gears. MP can stay like that, but for Campaign I want more exotic gameplay.

I love that the grim darkness and dread of Gears1 is coming back. I liked feeling like I was behind the enemy lines in a constant state of terror.

Atmospherically I loved the Kryll levels, and first meeting with a Berserker was God tier.

Last but not least I want a more cinematic game. I won't get Gears 4 unless it feels like a genuine step up, an all new Gears. I wanted Halo to be more of the same, but 343 said no. For Gears I want the opposite, really. Go crazy!

-60fps MP (not too good at noticing this but UE MP felt fluid)
-Gears 3 gnasher
-Sawed-off can stay. A good gnasher user can take down a SOS user easy
-No Snipe active down
-Reduce radius of wall-tagged grenades
-Fastness of Gears 3
-Remastered maps from Gears 2
-Campaign that's more than just a horde mode (not like Judgement)
-Horde 3.0 with more strategy
-Beast mode 3.0 (not sure what they could add, didn't really enjoy Beast in 3 or Judement)
-DEDICATED SERVERS
-D. Carmine

we had a ranking system in Gears2 and all that happened was people complained about not getting top rank. it was later patched to the current progression system we have now in Gears3/J/UE.
I wouldn't really call that a good attempt when it was only a total of five ranks. No one could get top rank because of how ridiculous the gap was between 4 and 5. They just need to make a skill based system with more ranks is all.

Other people touched on this but it is worth emphasising.

Oh, yeah, absolutely. The idea of quick and ranked should go away for good. It should just one set of playlists. At least in UE there's only one playlist per mode so TC at least is on board with it more than Epic ever was.

And I agree as well, Judgment did a lot of good things, most notably the weapon balance. Outside of center screen aiming and the Sawed-Off being worthless it was exceptional.

Also, they should remap sprint/cover from A to LB. Makes much more sense and gives more control. Seeing where your teammates are isn't as important as being able to look around at all times.

Gears UE does that, it is under the Tournament Controls. I tried it when the game launched, but A to Roadie Run/Cover is ingrained into memory that it was too weird to learn. Odd considering I use Bumper Jumper in Halo.

Interesting. It might take some getting used to, but it's been a while since I played a Gears game, so I might be alright.

I think my main problem with the Tournament Controls in Gears UE is that I am used to A to Sprint and LB to Jump in Halo. I constantly found myself trying to sprint with A and cover with LB when they are both on LB. Too annoyed in my first match that I switched back to the default controls.

I want the campaign to be more like Gears 1,which has the best campaign in the entire series. Hopefully the multiplayer is more like Gears 3 and less like Judgement (even though it is fun, it was handled poorly).

To be honest i want a complete reboot. I think a lot of people were "geared" out by the end of 3 and probbaly explains judgments poor performance.

Gears 3 for me was perfect.

In thinking complete reboot christopher nolan batman style.

Hope to see more from you guys soon. Happy New Years to the TC team! :)

I just hope it's not dark like the demo they showed.

I hope they focus on super graphics more so than 60fps.

And that Horde mode has the microtransactions that allow for free maps for all the multiplayer modes.

Gears of War had always been a graphical showcase, hopefully that remains true with 4 as well. I thought what they showed at E3 looked fantastic for a very early look at the game.

After Gears UE 60fps is mandatory for the multiplayer. In the campaing if they want impressive graphics, solid 30fps is fine.

I don't think so, Judgment is a bad game for Gears standards. Campaing is like horde scenarios in a sequel and MP on launch was simply atrocious with 4 versus maps, all players with grenades, impossibility to start a match using Gnasher and Lancer, besides not having Locusts. Some things were adjusted, more maps added, but still is way behind Gears 3.

60fps multi or bust.

Does it really need it, though? 60fps is nice and all, but I don't feel like it really adds a huge amount to a game like Gears. I'd be happier with a gorgeous, jam-packed 30fps MP than having to make more sacrifices to achieve 60fps when it's not really a twitch shooter.

That said, they kinda already set a 60fps MP precedent in UE, so that's what I'm expecting.

Lot of hate for Judgement, but that and Gears 2 were my faves.

I hope Gears 4 brings a mesh of Gears 2 as far as scale is concerned and Judgement as far as mechanics and feel.

I think 60FPS has to be the target for MP, even if that means a drop in resolution. UE feels too good to go back.

However, I expect SP to be 30FPS.

Wonder if we'll see the return of arcade mode or anything similar. Something tells me we are in for something a little bit deeper and darker than we are used to.

The general tone of the campaign, from the little we've seen, seems like it would rub up against a score attack mode with modifiers... though maybe I am wrong.
