Oculus Rift pre-orders to open on January 6 8am pacific time

I have been a bit out of the loop with latest VR news. I don't mean to bring up a debate on which is "better", but is there any speculation in regards to which VR set will bring stronger specs to the table between the Occulus and the Vive, pricing aside?

So dk1 and dk 2 were not custom built? I understand it better but everything was there besides the headphones. Economies of scale should decrease the price.

They used off the shelf parts. The DK2 uses a Galaxy Note 3 screen, for example. Everything in the CV1 is custom, even as far as the outer material of the headset. Custom lenses, custom screens, headphones with a DAC. And of course it's been meticulously designed rather than just a basic plastic shell. Inside of CV1 Vs DK2.

This tech will iterate so quickly over the next few years that debating purchasing decisions over specs now is a bit silly to me.

If you're an early adopter then you'll be feeling the burn in less that 12 months time no matter what.

I'm not sure I understand the argument. Companies announce preorders at the same time as price all the time for products that release very soon after. Phones are a pretty good example of this.

It is shit for high demand products no matter who does it.

That doesn't make sense. Why does it matter? Preorders open, you look at the price and decide to click the button or not.

Manipulating human psychology for profit isn't something I like. It makes me feel like I'm a cow in a herd. Moreover, that is the whole point of companies like Facebook that compile data on human behaviour and then sell it to other companies so they can sell stuff. It's gross and as AI takes off it becomes scary. It might not make sense, but that's the way it makes me feel.

My guess based on DK1 and DK2 price point is $500. I'm very happy to be a kickstarter backer though, since now I don't really need to care beyond wanting to see it widely adopted for the sake of strong support. I knew buying the DK1 was a gamble.

When Doom 3 being bundled fell through... I wondered. Looks like us backers won though now.

My PC is already well specced. I have a great racing wheel in the g27. I guess I should buy a flight stick now maybe...

I'm actually considering a HOTAS setup with the money I was going to put towards a Rift now that I'm getting one for free.

It doesn't make sense. Even if we just accept your theory of psychological manipulation, do you refuse to buy any product that advertises? Ads are very blatantly for-profit manipulation. The Facebook stuff is just weird paranoia.

At least the kickstarter pledgers won't be DDoSing the store page when it opens, lol.
Hopefully with Facebook behind it there won't be the problems the DK2 page had when they opened those pre orders. That was a difficult ordering experience.

I think we're wasting our breath on somebody that is beyond rational analysis of this situation.

Well technically it can negatively affect their sales on a small degree for the opening wave since anyone who was planning to save up can't without a target, though that may be the plan to help ease production and it really will be a smaller amount since most people who have a system that can run it probably have a large amount of disposable income. It's also not exactly the same as phones since generally you have an idea what price bracket to expect from past releases. This being a brand new technology it wouldn't have been a bad idea to let people know what to expect earlier.

I'm probably still getting one eventually when I know what price to expect, but I'd have been in the pre-order wave too had I known how much I needed to save up. The only downside to this IMO, is that now I won't be able to be in the launch wave I'm debating waiting on gen 2 since I'll have more of an idea of how much money to set aside for when it gets here.

Damn it, no Switzerland listed. I have to ship it to Germany, will cost me an extra 12% because of the higher VAT.

Sucks.

The store site is hosted on Facebook servers, so probably no worries there.

Yeah that should do the trick. My main worry now is that I'm going on a hiking trip tomorrow so I hope there will be internet coverage.

Good news everyone! They're shipping the CV1 with a case similar to the one the DK1 shipped with!

I didn't realize they skipped the case on the DK2. Nice to see it's back, my first few weeks with the DK1 I was taking it everywhere I went to demo it.

We don't actually know if they're shipping the case with your Rift purchase, only that a case will be available at some point.

It seems obvious based on the wording.

"People really loved the carrying case we included with DK1 and skipped for DK2, so good news: It is coming back, and doper than ever!"

Having the case for everyone will definitely be a nice touch. Since they're mass producing it and not having another version a few months from now, it shouldn't add a whole lot to the cost. The big cost is the initial mold they need to send to the manufacturer (those tend to cost 6 figures to create), and they likely couldn't justify that with DK2 when they had CV on the horizon (which at the time seemed closer than what it turned out to be due to the FB acquisition).

Does anyone know reputable and safe freight forwarder in germany? I'm not in the list of supported countries and in EU, so it will be probably cheaper to get it sent to EU and not to US freight forwarder and then to EU because of customs payments etc. (depends on the location from where they send it).

We'll find out in about 20 or so hours what's all included with the Rift so at least the wait to see if I misinterpreted what Palmer said won't be long.

Oh my gosh it is that soon. I'm vibrating with excitement!

I'm trying not to pay much mind to the earlier-than-you-think ship date rumors.

I really think everyone who preorders is going to be in the first shipment, even if they order hours late. This is such a niche product despite the excitement in some communities.

That being said, I'll be there minute 1!

Absolutely. This is a huge thing for them and I feel they really want to nail the tone as a company that can deliver a product, and do it right.

So they're going to announce the price about 15 minutes before preorders go live, right? If they haven't said it by now, they must be waiting until the final possible moment. I'm not 100% certain what that ultimately means, but I'm not a fan.

Especially when you consider how powerful computer is needed. There are something like 4 million people who have the required video card, total. Plus they've been manufacturing the Rifts for a couple months, so should have a bunch ready to ship.

I'd bet we hear about the price before midnight tonight (or maybe *at* midnight).

I'm hoping that's the case, but I'm going to be mashing the refresh button tomorrow regardless.

More likely we can see the price when we go to the pre-order page. Not the best way, I agree.
