35.9 million and this dude got the first one

I wonder if Tretton or House knew what he was doing - surely House did. Though he massacred it (so did Yoshida on first attempt).

I think at this point, people need to stop pointing to Microsofts fuck ups and pretending that Sony is selling so much out of pure luck.

Why is the PS4 selling so much?

Because for once all the cogs of Sony are turning together and playstation is a global brand that even on name alone, means more around the world than Xbox or Nintendo.

Its really as simple as that.

Whether or not the PS4 deserves that success is kinda like asking if iOS deserved to become the worlds biggest operating system.

Both have happened because their makers read the market better than their competition and brownie points on forums dont pay the bills.

House does. He has a $hit eating grin when he starts the motion. Trenton is like: "man time to go back to my Beverly Hills mansion"

Any Xbox 1 estimations?

We know is over 17.70m shipped.

So, any bets as to where on that list (Top 10 December NPD for home consoles) the PS4 will be placed?

1) Wii - 3,810,000 ( December 2009)
2) PS2 - 2,733,000 (December 2002)
3) Wii - 2,360,000 (December 2010)
4) Wii - 2,150,000 (December 2008)
5) PS2 - 1,971,000 (December 2001)
6) PS2 - 1,970,000 (December 2003)
7) 360 - 1,860,000 (December 2010)
8) 360 - 1,700,000 (December 2011)
9) PS2 - 1,500,000 (December 2005)
10) 360 - 1,440,000 (December 2008)

I'm gonna say #8

#9 for me, i believe we will see almost equal numbers with PS2 in 2005.

Yep. The PS4 would be doing well even if the Xbox One had a solid pre-launch period. Only thing that would be different is probably the sales split/rank in America.

Last gen showed that the Playstation brand is simply more popular worldwide as the PS3 caught up to the 360 even though the latter had a one year head start and more positivity when its gen was in full swing.

Totally agree, that time was so much fun. The hype machine was at top speed and there was so much excitement for the new consoles. GAF was an animal house from Feb - Dec 2013. Lots of laughs, tears, and salt.

Same. That PS4 reveal thread is one of my all time favorites.

Assuming PS4 is at or around 40 million when PSVR launches, I'm actually pretty confident in it making a splash, at least initially, provided Sony doesn't shit the bed with the pricing.

Awesome numbers. Probably shipped around 8m/ 8.5m in q3.

Can somebody post the whole quarterly breakdown of the PS4 shipments? Couldn't find them.

I'm curious how this year will affect Japan. You've got Naruto and Street Fighter coming out within a week of each other. Then you have DOA Xtreme 3 a little over a week later. That could provide a decent bump in Japan.

No, I explained why I feel the platform is weak for me personally at this moment instead of just saying "it has no games!" which is non-sense.

I don't think the proper response to something like that is to go "lol salt" either though.

The point is that regardless of your personal disappointment with the system or its library it still sold 35.9 million units. This is a sales thread and the market as a whole is very happy with the ps4. Saying things like "the library sucks", "the controller sucks", "psn sucks" or "ps4 hasnt had 864,000 firmware/os updates like xbox one" come across as thread derailment in a discussion about the systems sales. Not accusing you of saying that stuff btw..

Forgetting Final Fantasy XV and Persona 5 during the summer/fall season.

Some people seriously have no life at all. Getting all worked up because a console is selling well. What kind of sad and pathetic life must you live ?
Hmm...don't be so judgmental. Sports, Brands, Promotions, getting laid, lots of things make people feel good, none of which makes you pathetic.

This is the biggest reason why the PS4 is so successful, though I don't think you're quite right about MS not targeting high end graphics as the reason. I'm not a fanboy by any means but the whole "PS4 has no games" is very understandable to me. PS4 has yet to have a God of War, Gran Turismo, New Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance or Jak & Daxter game. Granted some of those are coming out but Nintendo has already pushed out a ton of first party titles and Microsoft has had 3 Forza titles, Halo 5, a Gears of War Remaster, a collection of Rare Games, Killer Instinct, Titan Fall, & Sunset Overdrive. The core of Playstation 4's exclusives has either not come out yet or quickly forgetten (Knack, Killzone Shadow Fall). There are outliers like Bloodborne and Until Dawn but the most hyped PS4 games are not out yet (Uncharted 4, Street Fighter V, The Last Gaurdian, Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5) and some won't be out for a very long time like Shenmue 3 or FF VII Remake.
Your bias is showing. Some people's GOTY was Until Dawn, Rocket League, Transistor or Resogun. The age of AAA being the titles that matter the most are over. Remember PT? It was downloaded over a million times and was all anyone talked about for months on PS4. A scary 30 minute demo!

The lack of context in the usual #nogames argument is pretty ridiculous on a forum that is so-called a nexus for hardcore gamers. We are barely over 2 years into the generation. Surely everyone can see that Sony choosing to support the PS3 until the end(LITERALLY) of last generation. On top of that, a few studios were sent to support the Vita(say what you will about Sony's support of it, but games were made that took resources).

Sure, they could have saved God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us, Gran Turismo 6, Puppeteer, Rain, Beyond: Two Souls(pub), Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus(pub), Gravity Rush, and the resources for Killzone: Mercenary, Uncharted: GA, etc. all for PS4, but then there would have been a huge outcry about cutting support and letting their system(s) coast just like there was for the 360/Wii. I'm fine with the way things turned out, and IMO it builds goodwill knowing that support won't get cut early, even if it takes a little while to get into the full swing of things.

My last point, is that a game being available on more than one system doesn't make it automatically disappear from the list of available games on other systems. They should count for all systems they're available on, not the other way around. We who own all 6 current platforms are in the extreme minority, and most of the industry doesn't revolve around catering to us.
How many sales did Sony get from fans that knew "eventually" they would need a PS4. Supporting a platform for a long times builds more fans, fans buy stuff, even when it's not very good. Sony could have ported over all those games to PS4, but it was certainly a wise decision IMO to have that strong 2013 for PS3.

Well damn Sony.

All in all, I feel bad for those who have limited taste and blame the lack of first party exclusive (but ironically won't acknowledge that their lack of taste is really the problem with the output) on third party partnerships.

Imo, Sony has done a great job in not just giving AAA but giving (what they do best) diversed experiences. Everything doesn't have to be an AAA and everything doesn't have to be the small bit but they have done a good job in at least trying to fit in everything for the lack of their big showing which is coming out for this year.

On top of that, I liked that they recognized that for some, it is disappointing compared to other years but at the same time, keeping close with partners to make sure all content that is being released.. Is done at least to a higher degree whether that be graphically, technically and giving those resources for that.

Congrats I guess.
Well said. Dreams, Rime, TLG, Tomorrow Children, along with the strong Japanese support create a very diverse lineup. It's really not about the big AAA experiences anymore. This is some of the good things that smartphone and tablet gaming has done, it has created a more diverse gamer. We are still due this gen for another Minecraft moment '-)

yep. Uncharted has basically become Sony's Halo, for all intents and purposes, but Sony seems to be respecting ND's wishes of letting Uncharted have a peaceful rest. Maybe they'll get revisit it in the future but it will be a different uncharted.

there may or may not be a franchise to come out of tlou and if there is, I don't see it going passed a trilogy or a tetralogy, either. horizon zero dawn is pretty much named like it is going to become a franchise, though.

However...the one ship sony continues to sale is gran turismo, lol. although perhaps it lost a bit of momentum with GT6, this'll be one IP sony will probably pump out for every console they have.
GT along with Crash are the IP I thought I would always see from Sony. Like Mario, Crash can become almost anything, and basically be a gateway to gameplay mechanics and experimental development. GT is cars, cars never get old. Little Big Planet was something I could see Sony making a franchise, but the way MM gave it off to other developers after LPB2, I guess they had other plans. I don't think you need a bunch of IP like Nintendo, but I do think Sony needs a few more franchises.

What makes the whole argument about luck so wrong is apparent in what could be argued is an error in your wording.

You say "for once" when in fact more accurately the situation is "for the third time all the cogs of Sony"...

Sony sold more consoles 2 gens out of three and is looking like a lock they're going to make it 3 out of 4 with PS4.

Guess they're good at manufacturing luck.

I actually think Sony's real impressive comeback was with the PS3.
Yep, 2009 was when they hit their stride. The $299 price drop, Kevin Butler marketing campaign, games like Uncharted 2/Demon's Souls, etc. And it continued into early 2010 with Heavy Rain and GoWIII.

They built up a lot of momentum for the PS4 with the turnaround of the PS3.

What would be a good price for you?
(for PSVR)

For me it's £250 to £300, so about $300 to $400 (absolute max) for folk in the US.

£300 and I'll manage to find the money to buy it and I'm there day one hopefully. THIS is what we've been waiting for as far as I'm concerned and while most people haven't caught up with the hype train, I believe once the masses start to see it and experience it for themselves and hear close relatives and friends telling them about it, it could, and possibly will, erupt. It's a pretty big deal that many people seem to be sleep walking into not quite understanding how huge a deal it is that we finally have good affordable consumer VR.

I agree with people saying if it's more than that, verging on $500 or whatever then yeah it might be dead on arrival, but eventually the cost will come down and it will be a no brainer for many to have a headset.

Not really. PS1 era Sony saw playstation as a side project and basically ignored it. It was a success on its own terms

PS2 era Sony didnt really care outside it being a trojan horse for DVD adoption.

PS4 era Sony has had the entire company supporting it from day one, with content in Vue and Music, to every major device sony putting out having some link to playstation. Thats what im talking about when i say all the cogs of Sony are finally working in allingement.

This is something that couldnt happen even 5 years ago.

Put another way..PSVR would of been a seperate device without playstation branding, just shit out one day if made last gen.

Sony is going to ship between 18m and 19m this FY, easely beating their 17.5m forecast. Dunno man seems they have a shot to go over 20m next FY.

I think 100 million LTD is a lock at this point. I am really interested to see the affect of VR on PS4 sales next year.

I really don't see how it can have any significant effect. It obviously appeals to the core crowd who love buying new tech on day one, but I don't see any sizeable number of consumers spending hundreds of pounds/dollars on hardware that's still in the very early experimental stages, with very few games designed to take advantage of it, and none of them looking cutting edge.

At least Move had the support of games like Killzone 3, and even that sold abysmally. The hardware is more interesting this time around for PSVR, but the games aren't as mass marketable. Hopefully Sony aren't expecting to make a big wave here, and just see this as a trial and error process, paving the way for more informed VR hardware and software design for the next generation.

I listed Until Dawn as an outlier, as one of the few exclusive games currently out that potentially push console sales. Rocket League & Transistor can be found on Steam and other platforms. These are not the titles that are making people run out and buy a PS4 right away. Every console out now has their share of smaller scale games so that's not a special point that Sony has going for it, when all of the big three has these type games. I'm super excited for Cuphead but it's definitely not the reason I had got an Xbox One. It's more of icing on the cake as would these smaller titles for bigger, console selling titles.

PT was from the creative force of two highly influential people in their respective industries. Putting Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro names towards a project would turn anybodies head in today's time as did associating Shigeru Miyamoto & Yuji Naka to a project in the 90s. Also if Silent Hills wasn't canceled it would have a game on massive scale.
