Joe Six-Pack: posting for the common man
Hell yeah at Fuji's new 24MP sensor (produced by Sony) on the X-Pro2. That it's copper-based like the A7RII's sensor will allow for dramatic improvements in ISO noise and processing speed, despite the MP increase. Fuji's already demonstrated this with apparently showing off a high quality 12800 shot at their unveiling event. And weather-sealed and lots of focusing points. Nice work, Fuji. Not a whole lot else to ask for.

you gonna upgrade?

All signs point to yes. ;b I did go all-in on the X system lenses during the holiday discounts because I'm confident that I'll want to keep shooting with Fuji for a while and have specific requirements for upcoming travel plans. So my kit is now:

16-55mm f2.8 WR
50-140mm f2.8 WR OIS
1.4x teleconverter
18-135mm f3.5-5.6 WR OIS
23mm f1.4
27mm f2.8 ghetto-X100
35mm f1.4
35mm f2 WR
56mm f1.2 portrait

Would be silly to not pair that bag of glass with a new generation sensor.

Official sample photos usually suck, but Fuji released some pretty sweet ones for the X-Pro2. Camera jpgs it seems.

Hands-on with the X-Pro2. Includes a comparison between 3200, 6400, and 12800 ISO on the new sensor at the time attached to the link, though of course limited by youtube resolution/bitrate and not the best scene to check for high ISO CA and whatnot, but still looking good:

Amazon link to X-Pro2 preorders doesn't seem to be searchable on Amazon yet for some reason, but found and preordered. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A8DUR74/?tag=neogaf0e-20

My roommate got a nice camera recently and I've been stunned by some of even the early pictures he's been taking (he's not a photographer). So I casually asked at a camera store what camera would be good for me (I want to take videos for YouTube, too, about 3-10 minutes a video), but if I was to buy a good camera, it would be for "still" (i.e. outdoorsy stuff too, festivals) photography. Budget isn't a massive concern, so the man at the shop recommended me this. What does GAF think, especially for someone just starting out?

That's a little expensive for a M4/3rds. This is me, but if I was looking for an m43rds camera it'd have to be cheaper and lighter than a Sony a6000. Which this isn't. That's just my opinion though. You could find a Sony a6000 for a good bit less, which will have a larger sensor and be about the same size.

I mean, maybe this Lumix does something I don't know about that makes it worth that, but I don't know much about this specific camera.

EDIT: WTF is with people using the dpad to AF on things. Like.... you know it'd be faster just to MF right? *shakes head*

Manual focus is really slow on my lenses with focus by wire. Having the AF point be selectable on the touch screen is far quicker and more useful for me than either of those other options.

I am waiting for early XP2 upgrader to sell their XT1 and pick up a cheap one.

Also possibly replace the 14mm/2.8 with the X70 and a wide converter.

I'm on the fence after aurelie on youtube told me it's a glorified point and shoot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wP1cDrwRJQ8

My iPhone has a flash, touchscreen control, and 4K. I wish the X-Pro2 catered to professional photographers as well as the iPhone does.

I'm leaning toward buying the X100T... I have an a6000 but loathe having to spend $900 for a decent 35mm equivalent lens...

Or maybe an old x-pro 1? Or is there no point of that now? Don't feel like dropping $1600 on the XP2 but I also don't want to jump backward.

Trade your A6000 with a XA2 or XE1/2 and spend the money on lens.

All these new cameras announcements got me excited so I went ahead and bought a Coolpix A refrub today for $270 lol Been looking for a high-end compact since forever, I thought u4/3 would do but the IQ of my EPL-6 is lacking. I'm happy with my d7k IQ so I should be happy with the coolpix too.

Hey guys.
I wanna get some recommendations on buying a camera if you don't mind.

I will go abroad for a year starting in February and have basically never possessed a camera. Since I have no idea where to start I'm gonna ask here.

All I wanna do is take some nice pictures really. It doesn't have to be fancy or high end, I'm not gonna become a photographer over night.

1. What is your budget budget?
tops 200€
2. Main purpose of the camera?
Wanna take some pretty pictures while traveling
3. What form factor is most appealing to you?
as small as possible sounds good
4. Will you be investing in the camera? (buying more stuff for it later)
no
5. Any cameras you've used before or liked?
nothing

Just wondering if there is any go-to camera for amateurs who like to take a picture here and there.

thanks captive for redirecting me here.

Something like one of these should be fine for you:
Canon PowerShot SX610 HS
Nikon COOLPIX S7000

I'm not sure how things are across the pond cost/tax wise tho. Make sure you get a couple decent memory cards. Sandisk 16gb class-10 SD cards are probably the best value. Happy photos!

because on camera flash is horrible anyway (due to the direction of light)
I'm not doubting that at all, I just assumed all cameras still came with a piece of shit on camera flash strapped to the top of it regardless of cost. I guess the new mirrorless cameras don't.

why put a flash in a camera that's to be sold to users who are likely to use external lightning anyway?

also why put it in the camera when you can sell a tiny hotshoe flash for another couple hundred!

....
I use the canon s110. There are newer models now, afaik there isn't much difference. Not sure about the price, but seems to be in the 200-300 range.
The SX610 has a bigger zoom range, the s110 has a bigger sensor, wider aperture and raw file output support (basically better performance in low light conditions)

just spent a day with the x-pro2 and i... like this camera a lot.

It's really hard not to want the Xpro2 since I just bought their 90mm f2 lens. Ugh.

you have an X-T1? i would rather use that than the x-pro2 for anything over 55mm — the OVF isn't much use at that point.

as a broke man i confess i straight up use my x100 in camera flash all the effin time

good enough for daido good enough for me

X100 flash is great! especially in full auto. you give up aperture control and get almost always flawless exposure

Thanks. Probably gonna get the Nikon.
btw, how do these cameras compare to the new iPhone? Since I soon have to get a new phone anyway, I might invest more into that if it's worth it.

zoom aside, i'd rather just use the iphone.
Yeah, I had a Nikon Coolpix 530, it was good, but I think you guys said the phone senors and bridge camera/point and shoot sensor, unless it's really a high end bridge or point and shoot aren't that much different. He's probably better off finding a used, but in good shape D300 or D90 or something if he wants to be cheap.

The XPro2 has a single dial for shutter and ISO. That seems like an awful idea to me.

It looks pretty functional in the hands-on videos, but was probably consolidated like that to keep all the controls on the right side while you look through the viewfinder on the left (since there's intentionally no articulating screen, either), The X-Pro2 definitely sacrifices a bit of the extremely refined control of the X-T1 for the sake of the rangefinder aesthetic and the more deliberately paced viewfinder-emphasized shooting.

I love the X-T1 and its handling, but Fuji's rangefinder style is so retro-cool and draws a lot of positive attention and random conversation; the opposite of being a DSLR Dad.

Is there any pic of Xp2's battery door? I wish they would move the tripod mount away a little or move the door to the side of camera so I can have my QR plate on it without obstructing the door on the Fuji bodies.

Found one: looks like there might be a bit more clearance.

it's an improvement on not having an ISO dial at all, which was the x-pro1 situation.

it's a little fiddly at first but it's definitely faster than menu-diving, and i think the best thing about it is just showing you what your ISO setting is even with the camera off.

Nikon DF has stacked dials too, but it's...not aesthetically pleasing.

Yeah it was also locked with a button. Would have preferred a strong click.

Man you can get an old xpro1 pretty cheap. I could sell some old Nikon lenses and get one but then I couldn't use my old Nikon glass with it. Dilemma.

real talk: shutter adjustments are useless to me because I'm on aperture priority 99% of the time. so, i, for one, welcome the addition of a physical iso dial.

Anyone care to recommend a lens to go with my Canon 5D on a trip to Yosemite. I haven't tried much in the way of landscapes before, but the trip would be a good excuse to start up.

You're looking for just one lens to bring or will this be paired with another?

I considered this, but with the a6000 (and several years of shooting with interchangeable lens cameras) I have confirmed that I just hate carrying multiple lenses around.. or BUYING multiple lenses.

Even if I got the XP2 - I'd just be pairing it with the 24mm 1.4... which leads me to believe I'm better off just going for the best fixed-lens experience I can get - the X100T. Obviously if the RX1R2 weren't nearly $4k I'd go for that, but... well, it's $4k after taxes here.

I was about to pull the trigger on the x100t when it was discounted over christmas but held off to see what the x200 (or whatever it will be called) brings this year.
