LTTP: DmC

So I have wanted to play this game since it came out but never really got around to it. I recently got it through the capcom Humble bundle and finally started playing this weekend.

I won't say DMC is my favourite game of all time but I have played them all. I honestly couldn't finish DMC3 on the PS2 because I got stuck in a fight against something like harlequin (can't remember the name, it was years ago) and didn't finish DMC4 because several reasons (My PS3 disc got broken and the original PC port just crashes all the time).

Anyway, I wasn't sold on the character designed but I was intrigued and after playing it, I think it is my 2nd favourite Devil May Cry game.

The combat is pretty good. I haven't played DMC for a long time but I couldn't feel much difference in gameplay. The weapon design and variety is cool as well as the angel and demon mechanics.

The dialogs are pretty stupid but fun (fuck you! FUCK YOUUUUU!) and the face mo cap for this game it is pretty good.

The action is good, the atmosphere and music is fun, the enemies are well designed. I honestly don't get why it got so much flack.

I'm almost done with the game (I'm not a completionist by no means) but I almost finished the game in one sitting. I'm currently sitting in what it seems to be the last mision.

If you have this in your backlog, give it a chance. It's worth it.

One of my favorite games of all time featuring my favorite character design ever.

I feel like the game is a love letter to everything I want and strive for in my day to day aesthetic sensibility, which is INCREDIBLE. I love it so god damn much.

Everything about it is pitch perfect. Gameplay, story, music, art direction, character design, tone. EVERYTHING. It brings a tear to my eye because it feels like the game was made just for me :)

Glad you like it. Now go rectify not having finished DMC3. It's currently on sale on the Humble Store for 75% off. It's got some issues, but it's easily fixed by installing this mod, which also enables OTF style-switching, double jump for all weapons, aerial Lunar Phase which they added to DMC4SE, and other cool stuff. DMC4SE is also on sale for 40% off.

Jesus Christ DMC3 PC still looks like a nightmare. This style switch mod really fixes all the issues with the port? It also looks like you need to add your own scripts, from a cursory glance at the page

Glad to see when people actually give this game a chance. My experience was overall very positive.

I am the complete polar opposite of you.

And that's okay.

It's my favorite Devil May Cry game regarding gameplay. And it has the better story of the franchise or at least they really tell its story better. The characters are fine, but the original DMC series had the best Dante and Vergil.

I usually don't enjoy dubstep-y music, but when paired with the action and visuals of DmC, it was awesome! I even found it on spotify and gave it a listen after I was finished with the game.

I really need to play this game again. Is the DLC worth it, on PC? Or maybe I should wait for the definitive version to go on sale on PS4.

The gameplay is fine. Downright enjoyable most of the time, even. The art design is also really beautiful. Very imaginative and vivid.

I hated every single character and the story was irredeemable trash, though, so my experience with the game is rather mixed.

The Definitive Edition brings significant gameplay overhauls, not sure how much of it you can achieve on PC with mods. On the flip side, the PC port is incredibly optimized.

That's totes okay!

I guess I feel the "edgy badass goth" representation has been lacking in AAA games, which makes me kinda sad. I'd like to see me represented on screen, even if just a little.

Even though I totally want more, I have this one game and that makes me all the happier :)

Tried the demo didn't like it...

managed to play a couple missions at a friends place but couldn't digest the aesthetics and limited gameplay, especially the controls which was horrid imo. The dialogue and script wasn't even B movie good.

Might give it a second shot if DMC5 is announced.

I played it at release (enjoyed it) and then again for the DE. In my second run, I skipped all the cutscenes and burned through the game really fast, and genuinely enjoyed almost every second of it.

The combat changes and its fluidity at 60 fps made the game a ton of fun. You just feel overwhelming dominance, and fighting those badass assassin reaper things was a ton of fun too. The story and characters really just got in the way to me.

Bloody Palace on turbo is great fun too, just plowing through each round with ease.

Honestly, I hate that the game gets so much flack because it is a DmC game- it is easily one of my favorite character action games of last gen.

Came here for a read, but damn thanks for the news mate. I need to frequent HumbleStore more often. Can't wait to run DMC3 at 60

I too enjoyed the reboot. Ninja Theory I think did a great job. I actually hope it gets a sequel. The gameplay was very satisfying.

You got stuck against Jester in DMC3? The optional boss battles?????!?

Yeah, I got there with low health and other factors. I was too lazy to start again at the time (backlog sometimes is just too big).

Awesome! I got DMC3 on Steam a few months back but haven't gotten around to play it. I will give it another go with the mod you recommend. Thanks!

I'm the type of person that if the characters do not look the way I like,
I don't even give the game a chance or stop playing it.DMC is one of those games.

Infamous second son
partially God of war
kizuna encounter (LOL)
COD
Bioshock series
Dead space series

And right now the order 1886 is getting on my nerves.

But he wasn't goth, is clearly designed based on a 70s british punk, and the games theme very anti-establishment.

i believe he's not optional in the very first time he's fought and that's directly after gigapede so that early on he might have some trouble (though beating cerberus and getting stuck on jester is a bit of a mystery to me as well considering how much of a spike cerberus is over both gigapede and jester)

this is what criticism of dmc boils down to. Series fans annoyed that they didn't get another tired retread like devil may cry 4.

No this is not what criticism boils down to. There are plenty of legitimate complaints about the game, regrading gameplay, design and how NT handled promotion.

And nice jab about series fans only wanting tired retreads. Jump in a "What do you want in DMC5" thread that happens frequently - that's not at all what you'll see.

Well, I don't know. I guess I was in pretty bad shape by the time I reach Jester. It was a few years back (2006 - 2007 I think).

I will give it another try, it actually motivates me to see that Jester is supposed to be easier than Cerberus.

The nightclub stage is one of my favorites. Noisia made some good music for that segment.

I loved the stage too! So colorful and original. The music fits so well, I wouldn't listen to it normally but it just goes with the stage.

oh yeah since this is something i remembered when i replayed this game recently to see if i could get into it still (and failing):
do the sound effects on dante and vergi's sword swings drive anyone else crazy in how awful they sound?
they're so 'wispy'- especially vergil's. nothing from their weaponsets barring the axe sound powerful at all. it's especially jarring on stuff like judgement cut and all of dante's guns
like in general i dislike the aesthetic of the game but the audio design of the player characters is something i'm especially curious about because it really, really bugs me

Ok maybe there are valid complaints about the gameplay and design but you failed to bring up even one. Taken on it's own merits it's a challenging, deep and rewarding game that is super fun to play through multiple times. It's certainly better designed than devil may cry 1 and 4 and I definitely enjoyed it much more than 1 and 3 personally.

DmC is indeed pretty good in its "remastered" form. At 60fps with the turbo mode, it all makes sense and ranks as one of the best in the series IMO.

this is what criticism of dmc boils down to. Series fans annoyed that they didn't get another tired retread like devil may cry 4.

Criticism of DmC actually includes its poorer mechanics, wretched storyline, unlikable protagonists, developer whining, and little difficulty.

I can acknowledge that it's a decent enough game on its own merits, but DmC isn't being judged by that metric; it exists to the exclusion of the original, actually good games.

DmC was the first game in the series I had played, btw.

Color coded enemies was one of the dumbest decisions made. Another problem with this game was that it was made in the unreal engine instead of MT Framework because Ninja Theory had no experience with any other engine and couldn't use MT framework because it was in Japanese. DmC is a simplified version of DMC.

Also I'm curious. A lot of people say they enjoyed the game and hope it gets a sequel but this game is the lowest selling game in the franchise. Did everyone get it on sale or something?

I played it last year when I still had my PC. Enabling the mod revealed no problems, and it played like a dream. You need to edit some values, but doing it was simple enough.

Stop right there. You sound just as annoying and rabid as blind classic DMC fans when you say stuff like this. You have no evidence whatsoever that this would be the case. DMC4s problems are easily explained, and the notion that those would carry over to DMC5 lacks firm basis.

It was part of a Humble Bundle pack for like $5 along with a bunch of other Capcom games. It was super super cheap, and the entire bundle was a steal for $5.

I think the story is fine. Especially when compared to the lower end of DMC stories like 2 & 4.
Doesn't touch 3 though which still reigns supreme when it comes to story.

DE makes it a good devil may cry game

DE makes it a considerably better game in general, considering that the vanilla console release is ass. A marked improvement. I wouldn't say it makes it a good Devil May Cry game, but it's a lot closer than it ever was.

This was my first DMC game and I absolutely loved it. I bought both on ps3 and pc because I wanted the 60fps experience.

I can see fans being upset about some of the art decisions but honestly I think some people need to let go a little. I don't really think the old Dante would have held up and believe they did a pretty decent job of making new Dante pretty contemporary.

Game was good but there were lot of stuff that I didn't like. Most of the complaints I had over the gameplay have been fixed with DE but the I really didn't care for the story or the characters. Way worse than earlier games aside from DMC2.

The nightclub stage is one of my favorites. Noisia made some good music for that segment.

Noisia? I remember that mission having only old Combichrist songs such as Get Your Body Beat and Sent to Destroy. It has been a while since I played it though so might remember wrong.
