Fire Emblem Fates' localization doesn't have the petting minigame

Yeah, this is the vibe I've been getting from those I know who've played the Japanese version.

This is a cost cut. Still sad, because I believe some of the extra same-sex intimacy was only available in petting mode.

This actually makes it worse.

Now aside from the mini-game itself interesting VA dialogue is gone too.

Good job NoA!

NOA gonna NOA. Still, they don't jump without NCL first telling them how high.

Can't say I'll miss this but it sucks for people who uh...we're looking forward to...petting their mages?

I actually think the Avatar's a great touch, the lords in these series are generally 15-18 year old males, by including the avatar we're able to include both genders and make the game more inclusive.

However ... the avatar was introduced in FE7 (albeit non playable form), and not 12, and there's definetly a self insert fandom there with Marc/Lyn.

I thnk you already see the point I'm trying to make, and I do understand your point (and hell if you look in the community thread ... I'm for the change as I think it's very much linked to the perception that this series is pandering)..

I'm mixed on the Avatar, but it stands to my point that I think the Avatar was actually way better implemented in 12, and didn't quite have the same connotations that it did in Awakening.

I actually ended up liking Robin. They were essentially their own character in the story more than they were a self insert. Not sure yet how to feel about Corrin as the actual protagonist, though.

lol most Japanese people are completely embarrassed by this kind of shit.
What culture isn't embarrassed about what its majority does? Americans/UK/RUS/etc always bitching about how their people do X.

I dunno. Is less likely to more likely equivalent to that? It's gone from a soft maybe to a less soft maybe?
Alright

Not always, no. This changed massively in the last few years.
Hmmm true.

There is officially no God. I usually don't complain about localization changes but removing an entire feature is outrageous and uncalled for.

The fact that some people are defending this decision is hilarious.

Really? Do the same sex options have comparatively shorter events than the other ones in the game?

I suspect NOA is nervous about controversy over a male protag touching male characters. It's one thing for there to be a few LGBT relationships in the story, but the visuals and interactive elements of physically touching those characters' faces is where hate groups could drum up some kind of controversy, i.e. "Nintendo pushes gay agenda" coupled with footage of face-touching. So NOA just removes it altogether.

I really doubt they were concerned whether people would be creeped out by male-female relationships in a game.

At any rate, this is 2015. They shouldn't be worrying about these things.

Actually, I think they'd be more worried about touching underaged characters than same-sex touching if that's why they removed it at all. And it's a bit malicious/disingenuous to push the idea that this is why they didn't want to include it, given that they're still including the two same sex partner options.

It honestly sounds like it's either the question of whether physical intimacy at all would be a fight worth waging in bringing Fire Emblem to the west or whether it was simply not wanting to record all that dialogue.

Someone who has played the Japanese version surmises that it's been cut for voice acting costs, not because of content. Apparently a ton of voice acting is available in the Amie mode.

Shame to see it go though.
Shit. This sounds even worse. I wish I knew how expensive it was to localize one of these games.

Seems unecessary to remove.

Chop off heads and rip out spine ... OK
Pet your party members... THAT'S TOO MUCH!

Lol, 'mericuh.

I honestly had no idea this was even in the game. It's a shame for people who are into this kind of thing. I guess they can play the JP version with a translation guide if they want to experience it?

I liked Robin too. He/she basically stole the main character role away from Chrom, it was great.

So the game is gonna be cheaper right? Since they don't have to worry about the cost of this feature anymore?

Oh its not?

hmmm...

So this feature had a ton of voiced dialogue, super lewd lines, and wasn't well received in Japan. Of course they were going to get rid of it :p

Since you could pet men too tho I don't think there would've been a shitstorm.
You could pet men, even if you're a male character. You could pet everyone. It's probably why NOA removed it, because they're a "family-friendly" company (read: still backwards and conservative), and they fear they're already pushing the envelope with the few LGBT elements already in the story.

So it's being cut because NoA is really lazy? What do western fans get as compensation? Nothing?

I'd rather they delay this until summer and get everything done than have some half-assed localization done to make a quick buck.

Not too bothered tbh. I thought it was funny that they put a mini game from pokemon in a FE game.... I would probably use it once or twice, giggle a bit, and forget about it.

FE having two versions and a day 1 DLC rubs me more in the wrong way... And we haven't gotten the EU release date yet.

i wouldn't respond to it the way that people are responding to this. i wouldn't be calling it censorship, because it isn't.

You're having a semantics fit, because this is localization just like editing out blood, crosses, and alcohol references are localization. Some people have called that censorship in the past, like for mortal kombat or fallout 3 and left 4 dead 2 in australia.

Do you have another leg to stand on or are you going to keep responding to everyone that doesn't use your preferred term for the same subject everyone in the thread is discussing?

a developer removing something i liked from their work would be disappointing, sure, but i would have no claim to ownership or any level of control that would push me to act the way people are acting about this. it's absurd.

It's not about ownership or control, it's about a hyped up new feature of a game being removed from its release in different countries. Some people think that recieving an objectively lesser product is bullshit, and that localization has overstepped its role.

I noted that there are still LGBT elements in the story. I think the distinction is NOA gets cold feet when there is interactive touching and corresponding visuals involved.

it was an optionnal feature.
to see a lot of thanks for removing the feature, you're so prude, its just a silly feature.
it has no real impact so you could ignore it. why are you happy, just dont click on the menu.
honestly its bad and sexist like some are trying to make it.

by your mentality, you could censor anything as long as you dont want it in the game.
So if i dont want a difficulty why not remove it..
If its was a movie, you would never support to cut a scene.

From what I understand, the petting scenes are open to any major support. While you can only romance Niles (Zero) or Rhajat (Syalla) as a same-sex option, you can pet any dude or lady freely. Think of it as extra same-sex content than the developer didn't intend.

And again, that's just a educated guess. Nintendo needs to provide some clarification either way.

Pre-order cancelled...nah I am kidding I actually forgot that this was in the game.

I am not too fussed since I heard that it didn't affect the gameplay too much and just as long the story hasn't been changed or the pairing then I am okay.

I'd actually be disappointed if this was simply a cost cutting measure. I have way more respect for the localization team if they decided a tactics RPG didnt need creepy filler content.

Quoting Tyeforce for the new page since it seems a lot of people didn't consider this perspective. Considering how few non-hetero relationships there are in the game at all, this really shouldn't be held up as a good decision.

This is extremely disappointing. =/ I understand the complaints about the feature (but, like...just ignore it if you don't like it?), but I think a lot of people fail to realize that for gay individuals like myself, this feature was really nice because, as far as I understood, you could use this "petting" feature on any character, including characters of the same sex as your avatar. This was the only way to have any sort of intimacy with same-sex characters outside of the single male and female characters that you can marry with a same-sex avatar. While it's great that the same-sex marriage is still there, and it's certainly a big step up from Awakening that featured none of it, it's still extremely disappointing that there was even more that we could have had, but of course they cut that out of the localization. =/

Actually, plenty of people want Phoenix Mode removed.
