Why was there backlash for DmC Dante? He was just as good.

I mean the games were always over the top and Dante was always ridiculous. His redesign in the reboot was different but it's not like the OG Dante design was something understated.

I would totally be down for DmC 2,or a new Devil May Cry with a total, new redesign again.

I thought he was WAY better! Favorite character design in gaming and maybe in any media whatsoever. So badass and relatable. Glad his redesign was as 11/10 as it is.

I'd LOVE a DmC 2 sooooooo much! It would make me SUPER happy :D

Because the og reboot Donte looked like a crack head. That's where it all started, then he morphed into Bieber.

I think it was if it ain't broke don't fix it thing.

Dante is a pretty iconic character.

Also new Dante had that outdated I'm trying to be too edgy vibe.

I like the series, but could never see the appeal of Dante. Changing him didn't bother me all that much

Would actually love a DmC2, ninja theory definitely learned from their mistakes as evidenced by the HD remake. I think they would do a fantastic job on a sequel, but I doubt it will happen

OG Dante was cheesy in a wink-wink nudge-nudge kind of way. It's an over-the-top, stylish Kamiya-style design that at least made him stand out a bit and have a memorable appearance and humourous persona.

Reboot Dante was just some dude who lacks the same iconic sort of presence. The above, Japanese-style action cheese is what made the series originally appealing and unsurprisingly, throwing it all out the door alienated people who came to the series for exactly that.

Not in line with my expectations for the series, especially after being a really big fan of Dante and Nero in DMC1 and DMC4.

Reboot Dante was just some dude.
DMC4 Dante is just Poochie
DMC3 Dante is just some MegaTen protagonist
DMC1, 2 and DmC Dante are the best in the series

And Viewtiful Joe Dante
Guess promoting a game by insulting the serie's fanbase turn out to be a bad idea

Ironically it turns out Ninja Theory had more respect for the DMC IP than Capcom judging by recent events

Because of his general attitude and art style. Its not because people hate change. No one complained about how younger Dante in DMC 3 looked versus DMC 1.

People don't realize there was character development thru out the game, they judge him by how he is in the first couple hrs, not how he is by the end of the game.

Don't like his new design, but I'm also not familiar with the old character (DmC is my first DMC game).
Doesn't seem as light hearted as DMC3/4's Dante which is the one people like

I really enjoyed DmC and for some reason enjoyed this version of Dante. The night club level was amazing and made the game for me.

There were people that were mad at the redesign, and I can see where they were coming from since it was a full downgrade imo as well. But the bigger issue I had was the change of gameplay. Giving a series that had always been a full 60 fps with amazing character control to a dev that just couldn't do that that were going to use an engine that also couldn't do that on the systems they were targeting.

Of course my point of view can be completely disregarded by claiming "lol you just didn't like his hair color/are nostalgic/hate change".

Edit: I'm also a little surprised that someone hasn't posted a "fuck yu" image yet.

The original Dante could be more mystic. The new Dante is just a modern day punk in a cyber demon world. It didn't give you a whole lot of themes besides throwing him into a world of limbo. Where's the cryptic hour glass or a guy who doesn't need to make a joke or act like a mean CEO?

I think the new DmC was good, but it didn't replace the classic. He doesn't really hit that peak if you ask me. He does a good job, but limbo and his overall goals don't really sync. It's like cheering for a young adult than a man who sorta roams around fighting knights and his brother.

He was a punk ass bitch who was designed as he was because the creators was targeting the frat boy demographic and they thought this Dante was edgy and realistic.

Because Dante was corny and over the top in a cheesy B movie kind of way. Dante was "cool." Except for DMC2 Dante, who was criticized for being dark and brooding unlike his previous and eventual later versions. He also wasn't Dante. The new Dante traded this cartoony badassness for a more "edgy" kind of cool, which didn't read as cool at all. He was in your face with a fuck you attitude that came straight from the edgiest of 90's comic books. New Dante probably still reads Spawn and thinks it is the raddest shit ever.

I don't really get it either. Old Dante was cringe worthy as hell. I'm convinced that most of the people saying he was edgy in the new one haven't even played the game.

Yeah it goes:

Honestly I think the treatment done to Vergil is way worse than to Dante. He went from a focused, DETERMINED and upright rival to just being...kinda there...and kind of a wimp.

I don't have that much of a bone to pick with new Dante/Donte. But I'm glad to see him gone tho. He had a few good or chuckle worthy moments but nothing that stuck

Old Dante was frankly ridiculous and silly, but it was kind of part of the jest. The world of devil may cry was always kinda colourful as it was violent and he kinda fit that mould. He revelled in the over the top without taking himself too seriously (at least in 3 and 4 which are people's favourite if I can recall). When they tried to make him more serious, aka DMC2, people didn't like it either. So it's not like you're seeing a first OP.

The problem with new dante is that it seems so much like adults trying to be edgy teens and serious in a story about a half-demon half angel fighting giant Bill O'Reilly heads. He was basically at the image of the cliche "anti establishment" plot: sloppy, slurring his lines, often witless when it came to dialogue that took itself more seriously that it should've. I can see the angle they were going for tho but it just felt like they were trying way too much to appeal to a pre-conceived notion of what the demographic for these games were. He was just "some sassy/cocky asshole with short dark hair and an attitude", like many other gaming protags that came out at that time except this time WITH SCREAMO

Didn't help that there was a plethora of things outside of Dante's design that didn't sit well with the fans as well at the same time, making the hatred more visceral. People hated him not only because of his looks but mostly because of what he represented.

Again, I don't think he's as bad as new Vergil, but I don't see him as particularily good either

Imma quote Coffee Dog actually because he summarized it super well

Dante went from being in on the joke to being the joke itself.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
The design makes me cringe the same way the FFXV character designs do, it looks like something designed by 40 year old who still thinks they are 25.

The original Dante was cheesy but it was aware of the cheese at all times, the DmC version is not camp enough and tries too hard to be cool. OG Dante is cut from the same cloth as RE4 Leon and Bayonetta, DmC Dante is just a bore.

People didn't like pre-released DmC!Dante because he look emaciated and was smoking and stuff. People then kept hating on him even after they changed his look, because reasons. While I could care less, it's not by much.

DMC2!Dante has the best design, shut up.

DmC Dante felt like he was trying to be "Hey look how edgy I am" and it annoyed me. I never played the original DMC games, but the impression I always got from videos was Dante from the original was more a punk who wanted to have fun and spout a few one liners.

Yes they did. A LOT of people complained especially after DMC2

I remember a lot of people complaining about how bad two was after two. Not so much about how 3 Dante looked. Gameplay of 3 was just too on point to care much about his look anyway. Something that I'm sure would have been the same about new Dante if the gameplay was actually good.

Because at the end of the day, there was no reason for DmC to be an entry in the Devil may Cry universe.

It didn't need a reboot.

Dante didn't need a redesign.

If felt like change for changes sake, and I actually enjoyed the gameplay of DmC.

"Fuck you"
"Fuck you"
"Who the fuck are you"
"I'm your prom date you ugly sack of shit"

here's your oscar now dang

I really like the narrative of how people only dislike DmC because "muh white hair", though. Has a whole hell of a lot more to do with it than that.

I thought the game was cool and the design and trippy world was great but the new version of Dante is like, Shadow the Hedgehog lame.

Donte was trying way too hard to be edgy and was serious about it. He definitely didn't have that campy feeling that the original Dante had.

He felt like some kind of bad 90's EXTREME character. That, and he looked like he was on drugs.

Don't know if you were trying to prove that he's edgy or what, but this fails. This is a classic line with oozing with cheese. The edge on this is about as sharp as a foam roller.
