literally every single joke could be taken as a means of offending someone. do we just ban humour because there's a possibility of someone being offended?

Nah.
We just need to understand that your "funny joke" may offend someone. From there you can look at the criticism as fair and apologies or carry on with life. Most people don't want to offended.

I'm...I'm not? lol, I don't care what you think dude. I don't understand the hostility in the idea of disagreeing with how something is handled. I don't understand why people in the thread are confrontational about other people pointing out that someone made a mistake.

Humans, in reality, have different tastes. These same humans -- the people who are outside, you see -- probably don't like what you consider to be 'ok.'

Look at things from an objective view of the world, and accept why some people have...you know, preferences. If you're incapable of doing that then I don't know what to tell you homie

If you are honestly unclear why people responded to you this way, it's because you are using imperative statements. You yourself mention several times that taste is subjective, yet maintain with absolute certainty that the joke was a mistake or something worth apologizing over. From this thread, not everyone views it that way. If you had said "I believe this tweet was a mistake and he should apologize", that is, stating it as an opinion you have, it would be less confrontational.

Holy shit lmao no one's asking to ban humor, calm down.
.

You're saying that a person should apologize for telling a joke that offended a small amount of people who believe it's deliberately meant to offend them when it isn't at all. Any joke will inevitably find a way to offend somebody. Might as well not tell any jokes because somewhere, somebody might be hurt by it.

Sometimes,

In reality, just sometimes, people's intentions lead to awful outcomes. That's it. I don't understand what people have twisted about this concept. You can 'intend' to do a lot of shit but intentions are wholly dependent on how people interpret them.

Usually, it's best to not act on intentions and assumptions.

I don't want Aaron to lose his job, he seems like a decent dude. But if you're going to make a shitty meme joke when said shitty meme was cultivated by shitty people -- like all memes are these days -- then maybe you should evaluate what you do.

He fucked up. He's holding an L today whether you or the thousands of anime niggas on twitter say otherwise.

.... really?

Yeesh, really should've thought twice about that tweet. Most of the people I've known that shitpost this meme a lot are usually not healthy to be around for extended periods of time.

I was here from the beginning, thread, we had good times

Cant you all create a thread in off topic to debate the whole offensive joke stuff?

I like this thread. It gives me a good chuckle every now and again.

Who lives life this literally? Sheesh. Have you told a joke to someone, and someone didn't find it funny and found it offensive? What did you do? Go on the same tirade you're going on now?

What's lost if you just apologize? What's lost if you don't? Why is everything some fucking slippery slope with you? Jesus.

It's pretty much just this. I doubt anything major would happen either way but a quick sorry can help diffuse it a bit and we move past it.

None has ever made a good gender identity joke (you can guess why). Surprised a social media rep let themselves slip in that whole in 2016.

This isn't true, you can have jokes and humor that involve trans people. Trans people are not humourless crones.

This is such a deeply depressing and unecessary departure for this thread.

I've only been round a couple of years, but GAF just isn't a fun place to visit anymore. :(

Account posts "I sexually identify as an attack helicopter" meme, people get offended, people get offended at people getting offended, newcomers to thread get offended at thread getting derailed, people get offended to all of the above.
It's amazing how many threads across the Internet could be summed up with this post.

I've been here a long while. I'm hopeful maybe 2016 will be a return to form. At its current pace, I wonder.

that puzzling face
Eh, topics like this one have always been a powder keg. Thing to realize is in the aftermath is

- if someone is predisposed to a certain way of thinking, no amount of replies is likely to change his stance, especially if it's been iterated on a couple dozen times
- that really doesn't discount your own opinion, so there's really no need to get the last word in

Hence, feel free to get your two cents in, have a healthy debate, but when you start going in circles, maybe have the presence of mind that sustained repetition doesn't do your stance any favors.

Also stop posting 'oh my God this thread's done for', or 'hey guyz what's happening' reaction gifs and whatever happens with subsequent Sonic twitter tweets, thread will pick up with those again.

You just need to choose the threads/sections, like most online forums.

Well if you dumb everything down, you can say he's getting "offended" by the people doing that, which he isn't. Annoyed would be a better word, but still isn't an accurate representation.

If this is referring to me, I was just being snarky for no reason. As for a substitute for "annoyed", how is "mildly discomforted"? :p

Making fun of zealous activism isn't the same as making fun of the people the zealous activists pretend to defend. When you make fun of PETA when they go overboard, you don't mock mistreated animals.

Some of y'all need some Xanax. Didnt realize ppl were getting offended over this tweet b4 i logged on to GAF today. Honest question, how is this transphobic and why should I care enough to get upset at the account?

Falk said no more talk about it, there was a knowyourmeme thing posted a page or two before.

Well I apologize for the one post. I'm pretty annoyed about how people are quick to discount the feelings of a marginalized group of people though, but that's why I generally don't go to threads that deal with these things. This just happened to pop up in a thread I follow.

I'm not offended by anything, and I love you all.

Twitter has always been a hotbed of hyperbole, miscommunication, and topics taken in wrong context. People should just relax and enjoy the funny Sonic twitter account imo.

That might be the best way of saying that I can think of.
The phrase "I identify as_______, check your privilege" might have at one point been transphobic, but every application I've seen is in regards to the self-righteous egotism displayed by the Otherkin/Pick-a-gender group on Tumblr.

Let me clarify when I say "pick-a-gender" I mean people that say they're like stargendered or some shit. Not transgender folks who are genuine and have real societal issues that don't involve "wishing to be a star in the sky".

Despite all that, I come to GAF to talk about video games. Let's do that.

The problem is that for some people, simply BEING trans is considered Zealous activism.

The original helicopter meme was created to be used whenever discussions about gender identity HAPPENED, not whatever discussions about gender identity BECAME CRAZY

Considering I don't really visit tumblr besides pictures of naked people for drawing reference this is pretty easy for me to miss since I've only seen this kind of thing thrown at friends who are trans. Learning things!
Well I forgot I made an account to get some extra entries in a contest too.
