edit: wow. textures are straight up locked to LOW on 2gb cards without option to change it

So it looks like the gold edition of The Division is discounted again. Except the discount now varies from 8-10% and doesn't apply in all regions. And the page says the discount will last until the 19th of January...

If anyone was looking to pre-order it, this might be a good opportunity to do so.

Valve, in addition to being a private company, has all of the money in the world and thus can afford to take as much time as needed on its game projects. I wouldn't be so concerned about its future as a game developer when its last wholly internal project hasn't even turned five. Valve works on passion projects, essentially, whereas most other developers are backed by publishers whose shareholders demand regular output.

I agree they can take their time. But you must admit that it sucks a bit to see them working on many projects since HL2 Ep2 and ignoring every question about HL3 (or whatever is called) for 8 years. Any update would be nice even if they don't want to do another HL game, story conclusion in video, comic or even blog post would be nice. I would love to see new game from Valve no matter what it is (new IP or game from established franchise, Portal 3 wink, wink).

In all seriousness though, you're probably right. A lot of the "core team" that were initially responsible for Valve's success are moving on because the company probably isn't doing the things now that made it initially successful. They've grown from an "independent gaming company that makes games" to a "gaming platform publisher" in just a few short years.

In a way, it's good that Valve is able to adapt and be agile enough to make Steam the success that it has been, but you're right that there was probably some resentment there. Mr. Cook in particular was one of the original Quake modders that made Team Fortress and ended up being in charge of the development of Steam (which is how I came in contact with him after several of the emails I sent to Gabe Newell were forwarded on to John). I'm not saying he wasn't fit for the job, but once the initial platform is developed and things are running smoothly it's not exactly the same kind of "day to day" experience as game development would be.

It will be interesting to see how Valve grows, given how many of their "senior members" have parted ways now.

We will see. I like that Valve grows and Steam with them. They do and push really interesting things sometimes. But i hope that they will fix few huge issues in that process (like Steam Support, better communication and among everything else going back to HL/Poral/L4D universe).

Seeing as it's somewhat a SteamGAF tradition if you are playing a game with user created goons and the game involves some form of permadeath you go name them all after SteamGAFfers. So here's the first batch of you up for the choppingblock...

I'll try not to do an iosefe and get you folks killed.

Inb4 Im dead.

haha, Devolver's GDC session

You Don't Need a F-ing Publisher

The recent rise in prominence of indie developers and small to mid-tier studios has brought with it a new generation of publishers, marketing partners, indie labels, and other spins on the traditional publisher. While no developer truly needs a publisher these days there are legitimate reasons for an indie dev to partner with one and this session will discuss some of the less obvious things to look for when assessing these notorious jackals.

Gotta let off some steam here:

I had Steam for eight years, and only asked for refund once (Arkham City). In February I had to ask for 3, probably even 4 refunds. All games were fucked up (XCOM2, SFV, Disgaea, might get one for Stardew Valley).

What a shitty month.

Nobody ever names their units after me.

I'm willing and able to fight.

I'm not cherrypicking, honest. Just there's 1,780 SteamGAFfers to go through so I started at the top of my list and picked those fitting to the classes I had unlocked so far. Don't worry everyone is going have their chance to die shine

Well actually there is no permadeath in Disgaea but you can be out of battle for a really long time.

About to pickup Stardew Valley. I understand there were some instances of people having issues launching, but then others have said restarts fix it.

Any more info on your issue with it?

I'm 90% sure that mine is because of XNA, the redist keeps failing to install (because of a problem with Windows Installer) and the game crashes before launching since that part is missing. So it probably is my PC.

The problem is that I can't fix it, tried all the guides on the internet and nothing worked, so I'm stuck.

Maybe try going into the game folder and install the redist manually.

Superhot is fast becoming the most obnoxious shooter I've heard of in years. I mean the premise sounds cool, and I might pick it up when it goes cheap, but all this viral marketing is really grating.

fuck, this is like the best texture redo mod i've ever seen for a game. I usually hate these things because whoever makes them tends to fuck up the original art to make something they feel is "better" (like all of those FNV mods for example) but these folks get it: just make the damn thing look the same but in a higher res. Stay true to the original art.

even the 3d additions are fantastic. Look at those door handles for instance.

I did that, got stuck mid install due to "The Windows Installer service could not be accessed." I did all the things I could find (take ownership, change registry, change .dll, all of it) and nothing worked.

But you could excuse every game like that. I mean Order could have an endless survival mode, but it still would just be a 4-5 hour shooter.

I don't know if I could stomach an endless QTE mode.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Shit. Try verify game cache?

Did that, nothing. Edited the vdf files to bypass the install, still crashing. Deleted everything and downloaded it again, same results. I love Terraria and Harvest Moon, so I'm pretty disappointed about not being able to play. Not that it is the game creator's fault, my Windows is messing things up, but still, I really wanted to play this.

Yeah, every time there's an update my mind is blown. Best texture mod ever. These guys are heroes.

Good lord Shadwen is baad, feels like a prototype/proof of concept at this point. Can't believe it's an actual demo.

Not like this, Frozenbyte.

With that attitude you must be missing out on a lot of games.

there's a difference when the devs themselves push people to shill for them in the game

this goes beyond just your normal fan shilling

it's a call to arms to astroturf the hell out of the internet

The Order is a story-driven game while SUPERHOT is 95% a gameplay-driven game. The story mode is pretty much a training mode for the challenges, speedruns and endless mode.
