Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

This would probably cause confusion and probably mess up their current momentum.......probably.
But I don't see why Sony didn't do this off the bat, nothing has change since the PS4 released and 4K is still in its infancy, just seems a odd move and waste of profit which could be sent on a real successor.

Exactly, I agree with you.

Compare it to PS3 days. Games on PC got slowly better and better while the same counterpart games on PS3 slowly got uglier in comparison. With PC games taking a generation leap in this upcoming year, more developers will be inclined to increase the visual fidelity to match the newer hardware's threshold. I believe that existing PS4 will not be gimped for the sake of gimping. It'll be more of maintaining minimum specs e.g. 900p/30 and going from there. Visuals wise, it may be a difference comparable to DX11 to DX12, or High to Ultra.

They will always satisfy the low end. As of now, XBO is the low end. Maybe NX will become the low end in the upcoming year.

I think this is a great model. All PS4 games will have to target the low spec, but then builds can be made to up the rendering fidelity when more resources are available.

It's really is the best of both worlds, and is a model the console space should have adopted a long time ago.

Hardware refresh every 5(6-7) years. It's not a matter of opinion really.

Architectural refresh more specifically. This if it happens will maintain the architecture of the PS4 (another advantage of Sony going the X86 root) it will only bring more oomph to it.

Presumably games would work on both and run on "high" settings on 4.5 and lower setting on the 4. Then the next system would come out and that would be the new high spec system. Games would still work on the 4.5, but would look and run better if played on a 5.

Something like that.

Hmm, I could see how this would work then, if not being an odd choice. It seems like only the core gamers would upgrade to get the highest graphical fidelity, while the majority of gamers would stay on the lowest supported hardware.

At some point wouldn't you still need to drop the oldest hardware? I mean, a lot of new PC games coming out today probably wouldn't run on the lowest settings possible on my PC that I built in 2007. You kind of have to force people to upgrade at some point...

In reality, what I thunk we should be expecting a "slim" PS4 with UHD upscaling and UHD Bluray support, along with maybe a slightlt stronger CPU for multitasking.

Think of the PSP to PSP-2000 upgrade where more the hardware was slightly improved (in the PSP case, they added more RAM) while adding new features that didn't impact having exclusives or the like.

That seems far more realistic to me, and far more attractive. It also falls in line with maintaining having to only optimize for ONE platform for PSVR.

So just wondering, to all the guys that really want this..Why havent you gone down the PC route already? Is it just because of the exclusives or are there other factors?

I do have a PC as well. So I only have time for worrying about one platform and upgrades/fragmentation. A console like that doesn't interest me at all.

If this becomes a reality, I will go exclusively PC. To me a console is something just plugged into my TV that I can have fun on with people who own the same kit, same specs etc on a level playing field.

Releasing a new phone on a regular basis is in a completely different ballpark to a new console. If we are expected to trade in our consoles on a semi-regular basis there are other considerations such as savegames, hdd data, peripherals, etc

Moving to a new phone these days is a fairly seamless process.

The big question here is will I be able to transfer my P.T. to the PS4.5's HDD ? :)

It's not different in the slightest. If the infrastructure already in-place then it would be as seamless as doing so as a phone, it's not like you're dealing with different technologies.

Ok, you convinced me....

Sony..make it happen.

They can't even make disc-based PS1/PS2 emulation happen on a current PS4. Instead we got the shit we currently have.....please....

We're beyond trusting Sony for proper emulation for quite a while now.

If they really go the 4.5 route, I don't plan to upgrade any time soon and I doubt the majority of players will as long as they keep making games that support the PS4, and as long as the PS4 is the platform with the huge install base and PS4.5 is continually playing catch up, slightly upgraded graphics are not enough of a hook to get large amounts of people to trade up. They'd literally have to force people to move on, and what makes that different from how console generations are now?

The idea of changing to systems to more resemble mobile OS architecture seems almost inevitable for consoles, but it's all in the implementation and this would be a miss, even with Sony's current lead. We saw how well the approached worked getting PS2 owners to move to the PS3.

So this could be last leak from Kotaku. Hulk Hogan just won lawsuit against Gawker and they owe him 115M. Welp.

That's just the tip of the iceberg

For the 'level MP playing field' concerns: you just limit the MP mode's graphical profile for that of the current PS4. Problem solved.

I would agree, but the 4K gaming aspect seems to be the focal part of the article and rumour.

It would be insane for Sony to release a console iteration that emphasizes 4K gaming, only to not have any AAA games to support it.

They did it before with PS3 being a "1080P machine" even though very few games actually supported it, Sony LOVES big technological words, it's mostly marketing.

but i already play on pc, my boyfriend prefers playing on console, there's gamesharing too i guess. I'd buy a upgraded model whenever it becomes cheaper, I already want enough games on the platform that aren't -yet- available on steam/pc
this has been an interesting week for video games, and most of it has nothing to do with actual video games, just platforms lol

I'm on PC as well. I just prefer consoles, because I boot the game up and play without worrying about balancing graphics vs performance. Too often I'll play something on PC, get it looking all nice and running well, only to get to some area *cough*RotrGeothermalValley*cough* and have the experience destroyed by the performance tanking... I had no idea that was coming, but a developer on console would have. It's even worse when the performance issues occur at the start of a game like they did in Arkham City, thus ruining the intro and your first moments with that game.

But I still want to be able to brute-force the games into looking nice if possible. I'd rather buy an upgraded version of my consoles mid-gen, rather than start to transition away from them in favor of playing everything on the PC, because they've simply fallen too far behind.
