Mark Cerny: the ps4 will free the developers from technical barriers
3 years later: here is the ps4.5
Only for lazy idiots.PS4 launched $400, PS 4.5 might be the same. That's $800.
But this is where phones & consoles differ. It's so many ways to upgrade ur phone.
1. Ur contract can run out and get a free upgrade
2. Switching phone companies
3. Having good credit
4. Promotional offers for new users
5. Smartphone 4 life plans
So many times it cost so little to upgrade to new phone. That's why many do it.
Hell I got a extra iPhone 6 thru thru Verizon Just because I upgraded from a 5s two years ago. Idk I need to hear Sony On this one

Honestly the only problem I see with this being a thing is how the hell they are going to market it.
You saw the disater that was the 3DS and now the New 3DS. Sony is going to have to figure out a way to educate the masses that one PS4 is the new one and how the "upgrade system" will work. Which may be hard to do.
People are still happily gaming with i5's so a $400 GPU upgrade would actually be quite a nice upgrade.
The problem with PC gaming comes when you buy your first rig and need not only a GPU but CPU, memory, motherboard, psu, chassi, monitor, mouse, keyboard, speaker system, etc. My rig I bought almost 2 years ago landed at ~3000 :/
But that was a proper gaming rig that will run games way better than on consoles for many years to come.
Btw, the form factor problem can be solved with a Steam Link, I'm currently comfy couch gaming in my living room at 1080p on Ultra at 60fps with wireless controller on a completely silent tiny box.
I don't understand what you're trying to say with this post
the ps4 didn't really do a good job of freeing the developers from technical barriers
Pressure of the PC...This gen consoles are already behind at the race...
If they feel the need to release a new one so soonhow so?

With the move to x86 and stock graphic architecture for next gen I wouldn't bee surprised if we saw incremental power updates as opposed to 5 to 7 year long cycles. Processors and graphics card architectures have a 2 year cycle and if say Sony decided to stick with x86, a "PS4 S" would be fully backwards compatible and due to near identical architectures games would run on several models with different settings and graphical fidelity. This kind of one to two year cycle can be found on smartphones and other consumer electronics and software usually still (at least with apple devices) runs on 4 or 5 year old devices.
This would even make sense from a business perspective. Selling a 300 bucks console every 2-3 years and being able to sell software to all versions of the same box for arround 5-6 years is a much better deal than selling one box every 6 years. It would also close the gap to the pc more frequently and leave customers the choice if the want the most recent high end model or the cheaper, older model which runs all the same games, but just a little less 60pish.
I'd certainly dig such a system...
It's really not that hard to run games at 4k 30 fps. I also don't understand why people all just assume this will split the user base. How is anything getting split if ps4 can continue to play the same games. If the ps4 continues to get the same games there is no legit reason to cry about any of this.
I pray they do this or just release ps5 asap because ps4 and xb1 are both horrible spec wise.
I think there'll be less total consoles sold due to people playing the waiting game.Say you release this PS4.5, only play PS4 game that run better.
How well do you think it will do? How is that effect overall PS4/PS4.5 LTD?
If PS4 predicted 100m LTD, does PS4.5 will make it sold more or less?
What happen after PS4.5? Will more gamers take wait for better version stand? How will this effect adoption rate?
I'm pretty sure if Sony and MS go this route, games will still be targeting the baseline ps4/xbo for a good while longer. This might even make your old PS4/xbo last longer than the traditional console cycle, since they will be the baseline systems. The newer consoles will just get more AA or run at a higher res. If enough people are willing to pay for that to make it worthwhile for the hardware manufactures then that's great the more options the better.

Funny since your post made me realize another good thing. Last gen, you saw many complain about the gen being too long, while many others felt that it lasted the perfect amount of time.
A move like this with compatibility between the two consoles (PS4 and PS4.5) will make both groups happy. PS4 owners won't need to upgrade since they will still continue on getting new game support for years. PS4.5 owners will be happy since they will also get new games but they will look and run better.
This makes no actual sense. New GPU different code and code that has to work on two consoles. This makes no logical sense. Iterating on the hardware will prevent technical barriers with performance and will be on the same platform so no new learning curve required.
That race doesn't exist in reality. Only on Internet .
Good. I'm already getting bored of my PS4, definitely looking forward to the upgrade. Hope games will ofter the choice between 4K/30 and 1080p/60 -- that would be a true gamechanger.

Im out.
More like piss off a ton of their current fan base.
apparently it's launching this year.

just imagine the DF threads if we have 4 consoles to deal with (PS4, XBoner, PS4.5, Xboner+)
You dont need a 980ti,thats 28nm obsolete tech. A polaris 10 + 4 zen cores is enough.I would bet this time they wont go the APU route.Graphics card and CPU power hasn't changed much in the last 3 years. HBM does nothing useful yet and skylake is barely better than the ancient sandy bridge.
How will you play at 4k on a $400 console? They aren't putting a 980ti in it.
Console games already have performance issues so making devs design for two specifications is going to cause all sorts of unoptimised bullshit.
Also, what do Sony gain? They don't make money on console sales.
"First we'll compare the vanilla consoles with the current generation i3's then we'' do a comparison of the .5 systems with the latest i5's and see how they stack up."
eh since the overall architecture is the same you would presume that any GPU code is abstracted behind low-level API's so the developers don't even really have to pay attention to what GPU they're coding against
in a perfect world they would just get performance improvements for free, but there are always optimizations to be made
The question is how low level the API is. You can't have to the metal and a high level abstraction at the same time.
