NX will launch in March 2017 globally, won't be at E3 (focusing on Zelda instead)

Both PS4 and XBO were initially revealed with only a handful of games and tech demos.

1) Wii U wasn't "initially revealed" at E3 2012, it was initially revealed at E3 2011. I mentioned E3 2012 because that was the point at which the lineup needed to coalesce, and it fucking didn't. There effectively was no lineup at all when Wii U was revealed at E3 2011.

2) At PS4 and Xbox One's launch year E3s, they definitely had many many more games announced than Wii U did at its own launch year E3.

Are they making enough money from the Wii U and 3DS to remain sustainable until then?

Don't know what you mean by sustainable, but I don't think they'll have a particularly good year financially. Pokémon will do well, and likely they'll try to make the Fire Emblem and (especially) Animal Crossing smartphone games very profitable (more so than Miitomo), but I doubt that will be enough to make it better than mediocre. They need a high revenue stream from especially hardware sales to offset all the R&D-costs (and other costs), and I'll doubt they'll get much of that this year.

I called off work so I could catch all of the E3 conferences this year. Lasts years was amazing for all the reveals Sony had. Personally I don't think it's E3 that's becoming irrelevant so much as I think it's Nintendo disappointing people.

Bruh, I loooooooooove E3.

What the fuck Nintendo. You never fail to disappoint. They seem to have their collective heads so far up their asses at this point that they can't even hear what's going on in the outside world.

Not only are they not showing NX at the only E3 before its launch, but they're also only going to have ONE playable game on the floor?

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

Let's be positive though, maybe they'll kick off NX with the best launch lineup ever.

One of the biggest problems with Wii U at E3 2012 was that Nintendo only showed off a handful of games, and basically all of them were games we'd seen or heard about before.

This led to the (in fact correct) perception that Wii U only had a handful of games to show. Nintendo released their panic mode Wii U Direct in January 2013 showing mostly games that wouldn't come out for more than two years.

If it's not immediately clear when they reveal NX that it will have tons of games, they shouldn't have revealed NX.

The Wii U was unveiled almost a year and a half from its release date. Not showing off the NX at an E3 less than a year before release doesn't make any sense, a difference of two-to-three months from E3 to whenever it's revealed isn't going to make a barren launch window lineup into one full of games. For games that aren't ready for live game demos just put out a CGI or concept trailer and guarantee a 2017 release, it's that simple.

Somehow, I'm not surprised by all this. It's been obvious for a while that Nintendo is going through a huge cultural shift, both internally and externally. My hope is they will come out of this better off, but to sit out an E3, basically, seems extreme. I'm excited to see Zelda, but the fact that it's coming to NX too sort of diminishes that a bit.

Lol, 2014 Nintendo was the highest trending company across social media for their Digital Event and Treehouse Live while Sony and MS largely died off after their events.

Treehouse Live also had consistent viewer shit in the millions too.

Viewership doesn't matter, content does.
Much of that buzz was for Splatoon, which went on to become one of their biggest Wii U hits.

Media buzz does matter. While it's certainly not the only factor, I'm sure Nintendo would rather have more people talking about their console than less.

Good work stating the obvious and helping to prove my point that the viewership count means diddly squat and it's the content of the system that matters more than any of that crap. And that constantly citing that E3 is bigger than ever now for viewership also means diddly squat in how many systems will get sold.

Content is all that matters of the system. Sony has lots of it. MS squandered their trust with their dumb DRM stuff and Wii U just didn't have much going for it.

There ya go, clear winner that had fucking nothing to do with E3.

You use a view count of 3-1 million to prove a viewership of 21 million doesn't matter? Dude that's laughably delusional and with that I'm not gonna waste my time anymore.

Yeah I think people are putting too much stock into E3. It's a big, exciting event for sure but it's not the only way to get information out anymore.

Exactly. You just showed how much E3 matters. It's the content that matters not just "omg they're at E3" lol

Except for Wii U it didn't do anything, because they were trending in 2014 for their content actually, that didn't change its fortunes.

A handheld will almost certainly succeed either way if most other things about it are right. A console from Nintendo, however, needs all the help it can get. One mistake and it's done.

I'm talking about what Nintendo most likely thinks. Kimishima expects higher profit margins, and something digital like mobile would help to explain why. This is also why you shouldn't be shocked when NX makes a huge push toward digital.

Haven't handhelds been dying a slow death why are we so certain the next one will succeed.

They might as well just do a panel with the key Zelda people, a Zelda concert and a 20 minutes long Zelda Wii U gameplay video at E3.

The thing that is making people upset about the idea of Nintendo "regrouping" for the next year is basically that we all thought this past year was their "regrouping" year. So they're basically taking two years to "regroup." I'm sure they need it, but that doesn't make it any less galling.
That's true. I'm only upset because I love Nintendo games and just want to play more of them.

A major lack of overall presence for two years is a bit longer than even the most seasoned of Nintendo's fans are accustomed to enduring. This will be the second straight holiday without a major console title from them. Sure Paper Mario may be great and all, but it's not really comparable to 3DWorld or Smash 4 in terms of being a major release from them.

This holiday, we are getting info about Nintendo's future instead of playable games. That is, I suppose, an okay substitute. But it also means that they need to have a lot amazing footage to show this fall to hype is up for next March. Not just Zelda.

We will need a full unveiling of some truly amazing stuff for fans to stay engaged in thinking about Nintendo. Mobile releases also have to be huge for them (they cannot afford delays there).

hmm, How can Nintendo destroy E3 without the NX.

Nintendo at E3 this year:

All of our games up to the WiiU/N3DS era are going up for sale on an exclusive brand-new online store called "Ninsteam" so people with PCs can play all of the past Nintendo games (by paying for them again) with their keyboard and mouses.
We will release controllers specially made for PC but with the Nintendo designs intact, therefore we would release a N64 controller for PC, one for Gamecube on PC, and so on.
People who are interested in playing old-school style can actually do it, if not, keyboard and maybe mouse would suffice.
The NX games would still be exclusive to the console up until when a new console comes around, then we would see the NX games going to PC.

(Of course porting everything to PC would probably be a terribly complex thing to do, and I haven't even mentioned the licensing problems, oh well.)
(I mean if they are going mobile, why not PC, right?)
(Let me dream ;_; )

People are accustomed to these guarantees not panning out at this point.

Of course, but you've got to remember that last year's massive 3 games were a remake that won't be finished until 2018 most likely, a game that's been in development for nearly a decade now and a Kickstarter that also likely won't be finished for a long while.

Like I said, the difference between E3 and the NX's reveal will mean nothing if the launch window lineup is barren; and if it isn't barren there's no harm in revealing it at E3.

So I can see the console reveal now.

Nintendo makes their entire E3 booth Zelda themed, like the Twilight Princess booth back in the day. Full on Building that is a dungeon, with Torches lining the walls. But instead of just demo stations inside there is a real life zelda dungeon that the press must solve, unlocking more and more of the booth. Finally, who ever completes the entire dungeon booth will find a secret room with a chest. As they open it the Zelda fanfare plays and what is inside? THE NX WITH ZELDA RUNNING ON IT. The console is revealed for all to see and we all get played like a bunch of puppets.

Mark my words, it is happening.

This is an important point that often times goes unnoticed. A lot of people place a lot of stock in E3 performances, but they often times have little to do with success at retail.

Serious question: is it true that Zelda WiiU will be the ONLY playable Nintendo game at E3 and if so, why? No 3ds games left? Nothing for WiiU? 3 days of Treehouse playing 1 game? What is going on?

But that's not how things actually played out for the most part. Looking at Wii hardware sales compared to its competitors and Wii software sales in its first two years on the market, the mainstream gamer picked up a Wii first, then jumped ship to the PS360 after seeing that the rest of the industry didn't follow and that Nintendo seemed to be pivoting more towards their expanded audience.

There is no market for a secondary (or even worse, third) console, especially now that there are more gadgets vying for the consumer's attention than ever before.

Sorry, by core gamers I wasn't really meaning the casual mainstream gamers that only own one console and just play the CoDs, Maddens, and FIFAs of the world. Though I didn't know some of those who ended up with Wiis in the household for the kids/significant other/themselves. But that market it is pretty much gone for Nintendo.

I'm meant the more serious gamers who always have more than one platform. Many of those had Wiis along with the other platforms, but skipped Wii U. They need to get those gamers back as while it's a smaller part of the overall market they buy and play a TON of games.

Even being a life long Nintendo fan, I've mostly gamed on Sony and MS from the GC/PS2/Xbox generation on despite owning all Nintendo hardware in every gen. I'm very skeptical about NX as I haven't played the Wii U or 3DS as much as past Nintendo consoles as their software has been too plagued by sequelitis and lacked third or second party exclusives to give it variety.

For me to pick up an NX they need to show me:

1. That it's selling well and won't be undersupported like Wii U.

2. That they're taking more risks with new ideas like Splatoon rather than safe bets with sequels in franchises like Mario, Mario Kart, Smash etc. than I'm mostly sick of after several generations of heavy play.

3. Get some neat exclusives from other devs that round out the library. Third party ports I don't care about as they'll likely run better on my PS4/X1 (or the updated versions I'll probably get) and a lot of games are online and none of my gaming friends care about Nintendo.

No, it's at that point that they realize that the whole real-life Zelda dungeon *WAS* Zelda running on the NX, creating a holographic dungeon around the players!

Running at 900p with an average of 20 fps.

It matters to the hardcore. Plenty of people I know don't even watch E3 but are into games. They'll get their news on other websites and advertising. I'll be the one hashtagging, my friends will be the one putting me on mute.

Much of that buzz was for Splatoon, which went on to become one of their biggest Wii U hits.

Splatoon also had tons of marketing too. They really pushed that game and tried hard to make it as big as they could. Nintendo needs good marketing again too to reach more people. Their marketing has been pitiful on their home console side while their handheld side keeps hitting it out of the park with good ads.

Mind share is definitely important of course but I'd also say for Splatoon they went beyond E3. They even held a tournament. But mindshare alone won't ever be enough without the content to actually bring people in to your ecosystem.

Do you think Splatoon would have been as big of a hit without the massive positive reaction out the gate?

I'm not saying Nintendo needs to time their stuff at E3 to get people talking about them, but I do think word-of-mouth is still a powerful advertising tool.

Can this dungeon be manipulated from a chair or couch by a dual analog controller? If not, that chest may remain locked in it's secret room forever.

Perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.
The problem with announcing a console via a Direct as opposed to E3 is that Directs are often announced only a few days in advance, allowing little time for the word to flow around, whereas the dates for E3 are announced literally as soon as the last show ends, giving people an entire year to prepare.

Xenoblade Chronicles X was last year's holiday game. :p

Then again, are we certain that Zelda is coming out at the same on Wii U and NX?

For one, yes there're games still coming to 3DS, like the two Dragon Quest remakes, there's also Pokémon and the Metroid Prime spin-off, all set to come this year. But by the time being there's no Treehouse Event announced.

Right, they don't need E3 for that, they just need to throw money at the right people really.

Yeah, I guess we're agreed on this.

While I still find the lack of NX (and the lack of any new games) to be disappointing, doesn't this news also give the perspective that Nintendo is trying to rush the NX out the door? Seeing as there will be NO NEW GAMES at E3, it seems like they were really banking on NX for their presentation, but they see that there's no possible way to make a showable product by that time so they delayed it. The good news is this will give them some time to work on it to avoid releasing another unfinished product like the 3DS and Wii U, but also it seems that there will be nothing new coming out for current systems and will just leave me playing Rainbow Six Siege for the next year.

Because their directs gave been reaching people so well...they may not want to do E3, but given that they don't show up for any other big tech events, or hold any conferences at all, they are really starting to box themselves into a corner. Maybe they will have their own event, like others are doing, but just a direct is not a good way to announce new hardware.

Ah what the hell. Hype!

I really don't like this move by Nintendo.

If the NX isn't ready this holiday, that's fine, but you don't launch a new console and decide not to show it at E3. What in the hell are they thinking?
This was their chance to have their big welcome back moment with a huge, live, on-stage press conference at E3, with the world watching, where they could show off Zelda and Mario for their new console... and they blew it.

This company, man. Ugh... I want them to succeed, I really do, but they're making it harder on themselves than it has to be.
When will they learn?
