Games do really need a Pause mode.

Nothing gets me more pissed than wanting to pause a game and dont have that option, when i was a kid that probably wont bother me cause the only times i would stop was when my mother call me for dinner or something like that, i could play for hours.
But as we grow older we get a lot of things going on and we simply cant control it, is it a phone call, the wife trying to say me something, the baby who suddenly wakes up, who knows.

I dont know where this "always on game" thing came up, it seems every game its like that nowadays, i get the idea is to make the game harder and dont let your focus down, but its kinda ironic since most games now have constant checkpoints and helth regeneration, so i think this lacks its purpose.

I say most games cause then you have the ones you cant sleep for a second or you ll do it all over again:

Bloodborne, dark souls and now the infamous " Nioh"

Serious, pause mode please.

Part of the tension in those games comes from no pause mode. And how would it work with matchmaking? You could just smash the pause button every so often to interrupt invaders, like a big jessie.

Those games don't need pause buttons. Deal with it.

games like those should make pauses consumables

make the ability to pause a commodity you have to invest in if you want to do it

(and keep it out of multiplayer/invasions/all that, of course)

*Offline modes* in games need a pause mode. To be fair if you were in the middle of a Dark Souls PVP face off with some dude who invaded you and then he paused to go for a piss you'd probably be kind of annoyed.

It's just in Souls or Souls-like game though (and online games obviously) it's still very rare to not be able to pause.

I know it can be frustrating but there's a lot of place in Souls game where you can have a break and not be attacked once you cleared it.

(but I do hate when you can't pause cutscenes in certain games)

These and online-only games are the only ones that do it.

Most games my butt.

In souls games you can quickly just return to a bonfire most of the time or just exit the game to the main menu and it will spawn you back in exactly where you left it.

It's really annoying how I can't pause during in-game cutscenes in Quantum Break. You can pause the live action videos, but for some reason they left the ability out of the other ones. Kind of ironic given that the game revolves around stopping time.

Real thread title - "Games with online multiplayer should have pause"

Unless you count all of the online multiplayer games that don't let you pause mid-match, the Souls games are some of the few that don't let you pause.

Almost every game is auto generating health and checkpoints everywhere. Let the rare game that doesn't do this exist. Also just quit. It saves literally after every single action you make.

you can usually just quit out of Souls games and it saves wherever you are. Exceptions are invasions and boss fights I guess. I got invaded recently in an area where I was actually trapped and could not leave, nor could I access the boss - the invader would NOT leave the game even though he simply could not find me. I had to leave but didn't want to alt F4 or black crystal as that has negative repercussions on your game. So I used a chameleon branch to turn into an environmental object in a safe area and left. Came back half an hour later just in time to watch the invader finally disconnect. Works for me.

I find it odd that those games get so much flak for no pause and nobody minds it about Destiny. You can be in an area where you are totally 100% alone with no online interactions and you still can't. There's plenty of times where I had to leave for a few minutes and couldn't do so safely.

Pause mode would break the online component of Souls games. If you are offline you can just retreat to a spot where you have already cleared enemies and stand there. You can also sit at a bonfire or quit out of the game while online.

Aren't those games the only games that can't be paused? I can't think of any others. It's usually because of some online component.

If you're not fighting against enemies, you could always save your game and return to menu if you have to be afk. The game puts you back on the spot.

Remember how Starcraft would let people pause the game during online matches? That shit was annoying.

I do think it's weird those games don't have one, i believe games like monster hunter dont have one either, I think. Haven't played in a while.

But can't you usually counter a game not having pause by going to the PS home screen?

Save and quit can be just as effective as a pause button. It just takes a few steps more than a single input.

Yeah, once you become familiar with your surroundings you can decide where it's safe to stay still and not be attacked, I usually do that when I have to take a piss or grab something quick to eat, but even then I'm like this just in case.

I like not being able to pause in bloodborne and dark souls. Makes it more hectic and stressful.

Offline non multiplayer games should have pauses.

But nobody can invade my game when I am playing offline.

Yes, a pause button is definitely needed.

I wouldn't want to have to wait until I get somewhere "safe" in-game to be able to walk away. Being able to pause mid-action is a must!

Bloodborne and Dark Souls have generally done it due to how their online modes work, in that they can't really "pause" in case you're invaded. Don't know what Nioh's excuse is though, really don't want games that don't have a valid online connectivity excuse (that can be fought as is) to copy that facet too.

In Bloodborne whenever I had to go away from the system for a little bit I'd just teleport to Hunter's Dream and idle there and it worked well enough

If you're playing a Souls game and you find yourself in a situation where you would need to pause, just quit to the menu. You'll get booted right back to where you were when you get back. It's effectively the same thing.

OP said "I dont know where this 'always on game' thing came up, it seems every game its like that nowadays" Then OP just posted example of games that are exactly the same genre. So really the complaint should be SoulsborneNioh games need a Pause mode.

The latest two Need for Speed games (Rivals and NFS 2015) have had no pause and it is one of the few reasons I didn't end up buying NFS 2015.

I always play in offline mode, why is it not possible to pause?

I just want to be able to pause cut scenes. My biggest gripe is I have to get up or even hit the ps button to "tab" out of the game real quick and I come back and the cutscene was continuing to play in the background OR because I hit options, instead of pausing or confirming to skip, it just ends the cutscene.
