Decided to start catching up on Marvel because I was bored.

Went from loving the first issue of Sam's Cap to absolutely hating it and dropping it, can't even specifically point to why. So far Invincible Iron-Man and the X-Men books have been my favorite. Biggest surprise has been Captain Marvel and Spider-Woman, didn't expect much out of them and ended up loving them both.

Starting Drifter today.

The LCS near me is doing a midnight free comic book day party, so after I see Captain America on Friday, I'm gonna head there for beer and music.

I don't think an Autobot badge is supposed to be placed there

Not that I'm complaining~

There is a prose short story in the back of Colder vol 2 that was a roller coaster of emotions. Paul Tobin is an excellent writer. I felt like I was inside the head of a legit crazy person. Truly haunting stuff.

Asked a couple days ago about tablets and figured I'd follow up with a couple I saw and see what you guys think.

Cheap one: Astro Tab A10

About the most I'm willing to spend: Lenova Tab 2

Anybody have experience with either of these and have any comments? Thinking of purchasing one this week so I can get a marvel unlimited subscription and stop thinking about buying expensive ass bulky omnibuses.

Comics is really my only purpose for purchasing.

Would be a shame to miss out on some of the Green Lantern Corps issues contained within the omnis, though.

All of pre Blackest Night GLC tpbs are out of print, and any issues that are part of a crossover (Sinestro Corps War, War of the GLs) are included in those trades.

Kipp, you need to stop living in the past. Time to move on
(to the May thread)
. The rest of the world has.

Ooooops.

Anyways, I just finished the first TPB of Hitman. So great. Really, really excited about reading this series. I have a feeling I'm gonna jam through it. Then after I finish Hitman I'm gonna put together a pretty big IST order for myself.

Started reading Usagi Yojimbo Saga v2. Only a few pages in and already hit a great story, "A Promise in the Snow". Man, that ending.

Yeah, I read the first two Hitman trades quite recently too. It is great.

Did that recent Garth Ennis stuff (I think he did some stuff for both DC and Marvel? Can't remember) get collected yet?

Edit: Looks like All Star Section 8 comes out next month. SO excited for that one.
Where Monsters Dwell (Ennis' Secret Wars mini) seems to have already been released. What's the consensus on that one? Garth Ennis and dinosaurs. Seems like a good thing, no?

Oh also, did Manifest Destiny get an OHC yet? I'm dying to read that book.

Just saw this on tumblr, James Harvey made an excellent post talking about Frank Miller's work on DK3. His theory is that Miller's work so far is actually good, it just suffers from poor coloring. He put his theory to the test by trying to color some of the art himself. The results are pretty striking:

Worth reading for sure.

Wow. That recolored Batman is stellar. Top notch Miller.

It is pretty bizarre. They're trying to color Miller's incredibly cartoonish, caricature-ish artwork in a very realistic way. Makes no sense and doesn't compliment the art in the least.

Just finished reading that article.
Now I'm just upset/frustrated. Miller was turning in top-notch work and it was straight-up ruined by the colorist. So much wasted potential...

Yeah idk who is coloring TDKIII covers but theyre really fighting Millers linework right now. Love the alt takes this guy is doing.

It just further hammers home for me something that I've increasingly realized: The colourist is just as important as the person doing the pencils. Can make stuff really work or can destroy the qualities of the original line art.

There's a war on between weirder art takes and the "clubhouse" colorists at the major labels. Unfortunately, Jordie Bellaire can't color EVERYTHING, and Dave Stewart is tucked away in Mignolaland.

It's the same with inkers too. I think it was frye who posted a comparison once between the pencils of an artist (I think it was Miller again actually) and finished inks by various artists and the results are massive. Wish I could find it.

Its especially important for artist who draw in an "older" style. Like you can't take John Romita Sr' work and go, "let me just apply this yellow filter and some auto-skin tones on this shit and call it day". No man, it just...looks wrong!

There is a certain tone and texture you have to tailor to specific artists, eevn in a more modern context, like that work he did in the 90s, that felt different from a lot of other 90s comics in its color usage, but thats the only way classic Spider-Man works man

Thanks for sharing, those recolored pages are phenomenal.
It looks like Brad Anderson is doing the colors on the covers and interiors, and he clearly was not the right choice. I wonder why in the world DC thought it was smart to go with a realistic/modern coloring style for these books and not something a little more abstract or older looking.

Can't James Harvey color everything

Even Harvey's DK2 looks better. I'd LOVE to see DC hire him to remix 2 and 3 (DKR is still and eternally perfect)

That's a pretty stark difference. Completely changes my stance on the art. The flat blocky colouring is certainly complimentary to millers current work. Really interesting read.

True true. It turns out that if it influences the visuals on the page at all then it's important. Pencils, inks, colours, lettering. Hell, maybe the people doing the flats are more important than I realize too?

Yeah I love his art. Masterplasty is incredible if you haven't seen it. Definitely get it in (gigantic) print if you can find it.

He must be working on something long form, I hope/pray. Everything he's done for a while is one off issues of stuff.

His DK2 recolors are so cool, I love how vibrant and pop art inspired his palette is. Changing the color choice of the middle panel on the right hand side of the Atom page to reflect the colors of the Atom's costume looks especially great. It's such a minor thing, but repeating the red and blue theme just ties it all together so nicely.

Lashley

Why does he wear the mask!?
GoT was good this week

Minority Report...er I mean Civil War II this month as well as Rebirth? Nice.

The Wonder Woman he colored looks like Jim Mahfood art. I don't believe in shitty art,
except for Greg Land,
I believe every art can be well utilized under the right context.

No game of thrones until ps4 gets hbo now and i subscribe mid-season. :/ The only show i like, i'll be forced to read comics.

I started Edmondson's Punisher run on MU, i figured if i'm voting for Trump i might as well read it. This guy gets stuff done.

That's probably the best motto for Frank Castle 2016: "He gets stuff done."

My wife and I are finishing up season two of Daredevil, and she loves the character. "He does what Daredevil should..." That'll do, babe, that'll do.

Nah, sorry, you can't salvage 2016 Miller artistically or ideologically. It still looks like hot dogshit, except the colors are halfway decent. It's like the recent UXM relaunch trying to hide Land. It's a good try, but, nah, it's still the same crap underneath.

If it's the same thing I'm thinking of, it was actually different inkers doing their thing on Jim Lee's pencils.

Edit: Here's what I'm thinking of

That is so rad.

Eh. I can feel GoT starting to go off the rails. I wonder if they know how to do anything but kill off characters.

It was never a good show to begin with, and I really I'd been exposed these plot elements in the book first.

That said, "Until you" is the sickest burn in TV history.
