Nintendo @ E3 - No Direct, Just Zelda Treehouse Stream

Seems a bit troubling to me. If they have unannounced 3DS games, it makes sense to show them. The "their own conference lets them get all of the attention" argument doesn't seem like it should really matter for 3DS stuff, as they have no real competition in that sector of the market.

It's probably due to people's expectation of a "E3 Direct" so they rather air one in July. The audience who's interested in upcoming 3DS and Wii U games will watch it, while at E3 they would get so much shit considering Metroid FF and Color Splash would be the highlights.

All they have to show is NX, and they can't for reasons we will not know.

It's clear they were targeting this holiday season for NX since Zelda was slated to 2016, but something happened and they had to move it to march next year. and then showing the NX on E3 would be premature, so they have nothing but Zelda.

One thing worth noting is they say it'll be an entire day of Zelda coverage on Treehouse LIVE.

Now I suppose it's possible that we're only getting 1 days worth of Treehouse LIVE@E3 this year...

...but if we're getting the usual 3 days of Treehouse coverage, then one has to assume that they'll be showing something other than Zelda on days 2 and 3...otherwise they'd have announced 3 days of Zelda coverage as opposed to just a days worth.

If this Zelda game is everything it looks like its going to be, as a Zelda fan it might end up being one of my favorite games of all time. But I've been waiting for it for so long already that despite the sparse coverage of the game I don't feel like another whole year of previews and information. Maybe I'm just unenthusiastic because my attitude towards prerelease information feels like its changed recently. I love trailers, even to the point of trying to catch every little detail in them, but the new focus on extended gameplay sequences and livestreams really puts me off because I feel like they show too much. So a day-long dedicated livestream to Zelda feels like way too much will get shown. On the other hand, if the demo is quite restrictive it will be quite a boring livestream.

I guess they've decided its better for sales of the Wii U Zelda game if they focus on it and ignore NX (and the inevitable Zelda port alongside it) but it does feel frustrating that they'll focus entirely on a game announced 2 years ago while ignoring a console launching in less than a year. Since this is the time of the year when people are most aware of video game news, I hope they release trailers and dates for stuff like the Dragon Quest 3DS games, Paper Mario and Pokemon, since they do deserve attention.

So Nintendo is basically taking off 2016. Hopefully we get a spaceworld at the end of the year, beginning of next year.

What is the soonest Nintendo would realistically reveal NX and its launch lineup if it's releasing in March? I assume they wouldn't show it before the holidays and Jan/Feb is literally 1 or 2 months before the launch.

A good decision. I'd rather no Direct then some half baked direct with a bunch of spinoffs and crappy games.

Fixed. This is Nintendo under Kimishima until now. Minimum communication, minimum effort.

I don't know if this is true. The guy just became president very recently, and is likely merely following through with prior company plans. The lack of comunication may indeed be his doing but I think it's unreasonable to be so quick to blame him. Plus he's only one guy, it's the corporation as a whole that has been questionable for some time now.

From the wording it sounds like Day 1 of Nintendo Treehouse is only Zelda U all day. If they're doing the 3 days worth of Treehouse then it sounds like they'll play other games the other two days.

Where are all the folks that were shitting on iwata and praising kimishima now. Communication from the company has dropped massively under the current ownership. There will probably be more internal leaks as a result

NX and it's development must be a disaster of epic proportions. There is literally no defense for having no E3 presence.

Their own event is their defense. They've pretty much said as much. They're not going to announced the NX with no hands on. Yet they've said more information will be released at the end of the year. Nintendo has it's own events all the time from small ones for gaming media all the time. That's how they get hands on for previews. They have large scale events like the Spaceworlds in the past and the big event they had for the Wii U's launch. Nintendo has the resources to do that anytime they wish.

They don't have to make announcements at E3 if they don't wish to. They can just use it for hands on demos, etc. Nothing says they have to have a traditional pressence. EA has opted out entirely this year for example. They're having their own event. There are a number of companies that don't bother showing up regularly. They have their own events or instead to go Gamescom or TGS.

Them not wanting to share the spotlight with any other hardware announcements, especially with the NX releasing after holiday 2016 isn't a sign things are bad. It means they want all the attention possible. They can and will get gaming media, retailers, and traditional press at their event. That's not an issue for a company as large as Nintendo. E3 isn't a must for a company of that size.

thanks kimishima

Seriously though, I don't get why they're doing this. Even ignoring the NX they have 3DS games to show off. Even a Wii U game or two. They're getting way more flack for having no direct than they would have for having a disappointing E3 Direct.

I don't want a whole day of Zelda streaming. I don't want to see that much of the new Zelda. And if they're not showing much, then what, just repeating sections over and over? I'd quite like to play it, so just put the E3 demo on the eShop or something.

People will see female Link and voice acted NPC's in Zelda and will lose their minds and this shit will be the most talked about thing at E3, trust me. Neogaf will be full of Zelda gifs and screen grabs, slowing each and every web browser to a crawl, all gawking at the visuals. Gamers are fickle, everyone will lose their shit, and yeah I see you, the guy in the corner with his arms folded muttering "I don't even like Zelda" to himself, you'll be hyped too.

Has anybody stopped to consider that maybe Nintendo doesn't want to be more successful than they are right at this moment?

At least we're gonna know what's the name of the new Zelda. Anyway, I think that Nintendo is following Apple's scheme in announcing new products. An event that takes place between 1-3 months of the release of the new phone/tablet/whatever in which they announce features, dates and prices.

Well I remember a lot of people saying that they should've just shown Zelda and they would've been happy :p.

Oh man, if they'd have just shown Zelda instead of everything else during the Direct that revealed Metroid Prime Federation Force, we'd have all been happy. Probably even Nintendo.

Nintendo managed to have their worst E3 ever before the event even began. That takes talent.

I'm terrified for NX if this is the state that their marketing is in now. Unless this is building up to something big, marketing alone will prevent NX from succeeding no matter what it is.

Between this and the lack of leaks though, I'm starting to think that NX will just have zero western focus and support (outside of indies) anyway. Not even token support. And yes, I know that this is jumping to conclusions, but effectively skipping the biggest western media even of the year is not something a company with any interest in the western market at all does unless they're so big that they don't need it. Nintendo isn't that big, and they just got smaller.

I wonder if this could even be taken as evidence that NX really is just a handheld with a TV dock, so the NX version of Zelda won't look any better than the Wii U version and there's no point in advertising it.

I'm honestly surprised they are going to focus on a game for an outgoing system that's going to be overshadowed by what I would assume is an upgraded NX version.

Hell, the Wii U version could come out well after the NX launch for all we know.

This all just screams last-minute change.

I just can't imagine they won't show anything else over the course of E3

I will almost feel like I'm being punished for being disappointed for last year if they just don't show anything for any other game. Treehouse Stream has been so good the past couple years it would be a huge missed opportunity if nothing else is shown.

I said "Nintendo under Kimishima", not Kimishima. Also he's the one who personally announced last year that there will be a new type of Nintendo Direct starting this year. Nintendo Direct that is yet nowhere to be seen. So, it might not be his personal fault, but he is leading this ship now, he's responsible for what is happening with it.

*sigh* It's going to be a great E3

Has anybody stopped to consider that maybe Nintendo doesn't want to be more successful than they are right at this moment?

Even if that was true, alienating their fanbase, which is they only thing they can rely on right now, is not a good way to keep their business afloat.

Over the course of the new NX information and E3 plans, I feel like I keep trying to set my expectations very low, but Nintendo still manage to disappoint.
