Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

I was on a gtx 980 + i53570k (@4.3ghz) + 16gb ddr3 2400. At the moment I'm holding on to the 980 and upgraded the rest to a 6700k + 16gb ddr4 3000. After upgrading I did some testing (mostly for me) and noticed a huge performance boost and that's with just a 980! If you're aiming to get a 1080 upgrading your 3570k is a good idea.

witcher 3 - 3570k [4.3ghz] + 980 [OC]
witcher 3 - 6700k [4.3ghz] + 980 [OC]

GTA V - 3570k [4.3ghz] + 980 [OC]
GTA V - 6700k [4.3ghz] + 980 [OC]

Just Cause 3 - 3570k [4.3ghz] + 980 (OC)
Just Cause 3 - 6700k [4.3ghz] + 980 (OC)
Just Cause 3 - 6700k [4.3ghz] without HTT, so practically close to the 6600k + 980 (OC)

Does JC3 and Witcher and GTA use more than
4 cores? Wondering about my 3770K.

Very, very impressive!

Now I just need to decide if I'll jump on the next Titan or wait till 1080 Ti.

I ran the gamut last time. 980 -> TitanX -> 980TI -> SLI 980TI

I wanted to try SLI, so it made sense to sell the TitanX for more money than a 980TI, then use the extra to put towards a 2nd card.

Now I'm never going SLI again. I'm not a fan...

This time I'll probably wait for the 1080ti. I'm not really hurting for performance right now.

Thanks for taking the time to post this, my current CPU / RAM setup is precisely the same as yours was and I was looking at the same replacement parts. Very useful.

That would be the explanation for that performance boost when switching to the i7, those games are properly paralleled to take advantage of the inherent hyper threading.

*Durante, make sure I'm using those terms correctly.

I had a similar progression. 970 > 980 > 980 Ti > SLI 980 Ti > Back to single 980 Ti and used the funds from the second card towards a 1440p 165hz G-Sync display.

I've learned my lesson with upgrading too often. My decision to go back to 1 card and get a G-Sync display was my best decision yet. I'm not a fan of SLI either and will be waiting for the 1080 Ti as my next card as well.

I'm considering finally becoming a PC gamer in November 2017. Perhaps this will be the card to get. Prices should have dropped nicely by then. (18 months is a long time)

I have no issue with 30fps, so when I read that this thing can push 40fps at 4k in all the games I care about... fucking phwoar. Rock-solid 60fps at 1440p is more likely, and that would still be mindblowing to a console only gamer like me.

Of course you pay for all of that, but man, it's nice to dream.

Do any of these reviews include overclocked benchmarks mixed in with the rest? Because I'm lazy and I don't want to look at 2 graphs at the same time? =)

1070 is $380 I thought?

980 Tis will worth less than $300 for sure though. Same performance with less VRAM and used on top of that?

If used 980 Ti's drop below $300, I would scoop one up. People tend to be delusional though on the value of their used cards, people are still asking for around $500 on ebay for 980 Ti's they are trying to dump for upgrading.

Really doubt you'll see used Tis going for under $400 anytime soon.

780 Tis are still going for $200-250ish, so by that metric, a 980 Ti for sub $300 would be a hell of a deal.

Yes , really.

Over and over again people kept saying (with a tone of great authority) that the 1080 was going to be below a 980ti performance wise, with a few guessing it would be above it.

Only a handful of people were saying it would be more powerful (my guess was either at 980ti level or slightly above depending on clockspeeds, as there were early rumors of nice clockspeed gains from ff+. I was expecting 1.3-1.5ghz based on the lower operating voltage for 16nmff+ ,but not frigging 1.7 and ocing to 2.1 lol).

What's worse is that most people were just speculating based on confirmation bias and not on specs or any kind of logical reasoning. Just some crap about 'these days you only get incremental 20 percent improvements every gen'

So while he may seem a bit obnoxious right now with his gloating, if you were in those old threads he has all the reason to be.

it's just a shame that the people who were so wrong despite being so confident now don't say a word about it :p
Really, people said a 1080 wouldn't out perform a 980ti? I need to see this.

That's a long ways away. HBM2 graphics cards will probably be all the rage by then.

very very impressive stuff from Nvidia, they have laid down perhaps a bridge too far for AMD I feel even with DX12.

Yeah man... I'm going to wait for GP100 and pick that up and upgrade when GV200 is finally released. I think that'll make for a good cycle. I'm not touching GP104.

I don't think AMD will be competing in terms of absolute performance but the rumors point to them putting out at least one card in the 300$ price bracket so the question right now is if they can go back to delivering the best bang for the buck while NVidia overprices the shit out of their cards which is where the business is for AMD imo.

This gen they weren't really a lot better than the 970 and similar price/perfomance ratios seem to always make people go NVidia.

Me too.

I'm looking at the 5820K though, may even see further gains due to the increase in Cores + HT.

6800K is on the horizon. Like... ASUS already refreshed their MOBO line ahead of time for it. All Broadwell-E is compatible with X99 boards I believe. So no need to get the latest and greatest there.

If you're not interested in that, the released should see the prices of 5820K take a nice dive.

I can only speak out of my experience and I'm happy about upgrading from the 3570k to a better cpu.

Normally the performance gain going the i7 vs i5 route isn't huge, but most open world games really seem to like multi threading (even if it's just HTT).

Some i5 6600k vs i7 6700k benchmarks scenes + some older i5s.

Is it necessary to upgrade your 3770k? Well make up your own mind. DF tested all i7s (up from the 2600k) @ 4.4ghz paired with an overclocked Titan X (so probably around 1070 preformance levels).

There is also an i5 6600k vs 6700k video.

The 6800k shouldn't be to far away. You might want to wait...

We are already approaching $400 on 980ti.

Also this listing just ended. It's not hard to find at $400 either, I've been watching for the past week.

With all the people I see upgrading to Skylake I wonder if I made a mistake purchasing a 4970k last December. Will DDR3 hold me back significantly going into the new generation?

The 4970k is fine. No need to worry.

I can't understand why so many of you are so lily livered in the face of Nvidia's huge price hike here.

$699. Next year the 1180 will be $800. What's the justification for the $150 price increase on the reference cards then, the poorly performing cooler? Reference 980 released at $549.99. I'm questioning this now as before today I believed there would be some announcement of the $599 non-ref 1080's but it seems these will also be jacked up in price all the same.

Hoping AMD can bring these prices back down to reality with a Fury X level card for $300.

I'm in the same boat. 700$ is ridiculous, and even asking 599$ for a non-ti card is a slap in the face.

I'v been team green for what seems like forever since the 6800 Ultra, but no more Nvidia, your prices are not worth the performance.

Yes but they will stay around that price level for awhile. There isn't going to be a constant flood of used 980 Tis going up once the 1080 hype settles down.

The only thing that could affect the value further right now I think is if Polaris matches 980 Ti for like $300.

Call me skeptical but I don't see AMD making a dent in the second-hand Nvidia market. It would have to be super cheap to make a dent.

What will make a dent is the 1070. Right now the 1080 with the FE tax is keeping 980ti (new and used) prices kind of stable.

But when the 1070 launches, your options will be:

New, 8GB total Vram, comparable perf to a 980Ti = $450

Right now, used 980Tis with 6GB VRAM go for $400 (you have to look but it's possible)

If 1070s ever get down to the $380 MSRP, it's even worse for the 980ti used market.

Yes, as in 18 hours and 40 minutes from now. They are doing a webinar which should have lots of news.

I think it was corrected in Reddit by an AMD employee that the webinar is just a partner thing and not something aimed at consumers, and it won't have any new info for us. You'll have to wait until Computex for a paper launch I think.

Me too.

I'm looking at the 5820K though, may even see further gains due to the increase in Cores + HT.

Haswell-E only makes sense for multi GPU configurations because of the additional PCIe lanes. For single card configurations the normal i7 CPUs are faster. The reason is that somehow Intel thinks that it's high end CPUs should be one generation behind their normal i7 CPUs. So the 5820k does not have the benefits of the Skylake or even Broadwell architecture. If you are sure that you don't want SLI/CF, an overclocked 6700K is probably the best and most modern CPU you can get.
