Fuck this venue internet, man. Can't watch in source and even in high the quality is just awful

The venue Internet has nothing to do with what setting you can watch the stream on. Well that's a lie because the venue internet does determine what bit rate they can run their own stream on. They stream at a set bit rate. For KI this year (and last) they are using a higher than usual bit rate so you don't get the usual KI particle effect muddy stream that we see at other tournaments. Ultimately what that boils down to is whether your own internet connection can handle the data being sent from Twitch. Higher bit rate means higher data you have to receive on your end.

The other factor that has to be considered is what data center your pulling from. Depending on where you are and what your internet service providers deems as the optimal server to use it may not matter if you have the beefiest internet known to man because you'll be bottlenecked from receiving the speeds you need to.

James Goddard just basically confirmed a new community fund raiser will be announced soon. Begin the speculation on what reward(s) might be offered.

Edit: should have mentioned that the data center I mentioned earlier means you might be able to run every other stream on source today on Twitch except Combo Breaker but that doesn't mean it's the venue internet.

Double edit: hope this post doesn't come off as confrontational just wanted to give some insight on how streams work in general since there is a lot of misinformation.

Got my Hisako figure today and I think it's broken? I'm not really sure.

One of the arms fell out of the socket and it doesn't seem to want to stay in. Not sure if it's broken or supposed to be like that.

Also seems like she doesn't fit on the stand properly, unless you're not supposed to be use both pegs. I dunno, I'm lost with these things lol.

Mine definitely does not do that. Do not redeem the color code and get a replacement. Once the code is redeemed they won't do refunds.

That was probably the most on the edge top 8 for any tournament or any fighting game I've had the pleasure of watching. Big shout outs to Steve and Adam holding it down with some great commentary.

Well that figures.

Sigh.

Yeah, it's a bummer this game doesn't get as much attention as it deserves.

It's building and will continue to do so. I think Street Fighter V's issues may also help KI out indirectly.

Microsoft needs to persist. Street Fighter didn't become Street Fighter overnight. If you look at it realistically, this is the "first" Killer Instinct for all intents and purposes and it's an exclusive on a so-so selling console.

Hopefully Scorpio can give the Xbox console a boost which in turn helps KI. This game deserves to be the most popular fighter out there imo. Would Microsoft consider an arcade release?

Oh man, if they had KI4 coming to Scorpio with an arcade release a couple months before to build hype...HNNNNG.

I should probably stop dreaming right now lol.

The key is going to be continued support from Microsoft and even more important; that the community shows up. By show up I don't mean necessarily offline tournaments but also creating content (YouTube, Twitch, Guides) and sending a positive and welcoming message to potential future players.

The last part is a tough one because I've tried to get several friends into KI but the online environment is a little toxic right now. It doesn't feel like a fun or welcoming environment, especially ranked. Being subjected to overly long ultras, tea bagging, followed by hate messages after the matches tends to sour people.

I suppose there's some options here. We either say "well that's any online game they should just get used to it" and shrug off any potential solutions. Or we take a long hard look at how to create a more welcoming online environment for newcomers. Either through in game changes or better enforcement practices. Not sure what the answer here is.

Yeah, I can totally see that. I think the game design hurts itself in that regard.

I think it's easy as someone always exposed to games growing up and online play early on to not look at things as seriously as we should. The people I'm trying to get into KI are not people who grew up playing fighting games or even most games at all, they just think that it looks fun. They don't really understand why I would choose to continue to play a game where the online environment projects hostility and humiliation over acceptance and fun. Games, after all, are meant to be fun right?

Just something I've been thinking about more the older I get.

I have a buddy who I just got into KI and he loves the game, but HATES playing online. He only goes into ranked for achievements. He just hates getting stomped.

This will always be what prevents all fighting games from ever being anything more than a niche genre. Most people like playing online for fun. Losing CONSTANTLY is rarely ever fun.

While I agree that for some people they just aren't motivated to improve from losses. It's time they feel would be better spent enjoying something else. I can't knock that, if you aren't having fun and your not a competitive person by nature then I get it. My small personal experience isn't that the losses bothered people but more the way they were treated online win or lose.

I don't know if any of this ultimately matters, it matters to me but who am I? Between negative online environments and abysmal Twitch chats I guess I'm just a little down on how we've come to accept some things as norm.

Fighting games are a tough genre because they are one on one interactions. There's no ancillary role to fill, it's you and the other guy/gal. Your satisfaction is pulled purely from that experience, there's no healer role to fill, there's no assist kills. It's a tough mountain to climb.

To be fair... it pretty much did.

Street Fighter II was when the series exploded and that was word of mouth in an age when fighters weren't really a thing. At all. The original game is a thing most people don't acknowledge exists.

KI 2013 is effectively Street Fighter II as far as this series goes. But it's SFII in a completely different market to the one that existed in 92. KI will need at least one more quality iteration to really gain traction in the FGC. Which is another reason why I think they shouldn't bother with Season 4.

Just release a "sequel" once Scorpio becomes the base for development.

Yea, I was referring to SF2. But as you say, it "exploded". It wasn't really a case of the game slowly building it's name up over years. It was a non-factor with SF1 and then was the biggest game in the world with SF2, it was pretty much an "overnight" transition. I don't disagree with you that KI 2013 is the first KI that has its shit together, I just thought it was a strange point to make, seeing how SF2 actually came up at the time. It's not like SF2 started out with less exposure than SF1 and had to grow from there, which is pretty much the situation KI currently finds itself in compared to the originals.

But the market is so different now. A SFII situation simply can't and won't happen again. But even Street Fighter required a sequel with its shot together to establish itself.

KI2013 is SFII in a completely different market so it's going to have to work harder as a franchise to establish itself. It's going to need a sequel. Not a Season 4.

I love it. Haha.

His fights with Dayton were amazing, and I loved the contrast in the people playing at top fucking tier KI.
KI top tier really are unique people. I'd really love to talk to them. Pink Diamond is very good looking and I never guessed that she played games so seriously when I saw her. Her matches were crazy hype. The little dude with the handicap was also hype. It looked like he has a custom controller? I wish I got a better look at it.

I would say the reason is in the name.

I just don't know if he does it as a joke or if he seriously believes he's some type of like wanna be rap star.

Played online with combo assist turned off. Yikes. When they put it in, it felt like there was no reason not to take advantage of it if there's no penalty, so I did. With it off now, it's like I forgot how to play. It feels like a huge crutch. Does anyone use it?

Just played Gargos. Love him so far, could take Arby as favorite S3 character. He's really powerful yet has good weakness like normals speed and special move priority.

Also RAAM might be shown today if the rumor is true.

Where might RAAM be shown? I thought the rumors had a reveal for him pegged for E3?

Going by that thread, I think it was just the E3 conference teaser that was rumored to be shown, not the actual content which was supposedly mined from another source.

Rash's theme is the only real standout for me this season. Tusk was at a point but not anymore, the rest are so so.

I haven't played as Gargos yet, do they have his classic theme in there somewhere?

Gargos' Theme is basically a remix of his classic theme.

I wasn't really all that fond of the original though, so that doesn't help me. :p

EDIT: I actually quite like all the other new track though. They're just not on the ridiculous level of the stuff Mick did for the previous two seasons. I kinda appreciate Mira's theme more for being legitimately different (I feel the other rely too heavily on the guitar riffs, with the other sounds just used to add texture). Mira's is the one theme that doesn't feel like it was modded from a track Celldweller already had sitting on his laptop. Well, that and Arbiter, for obvious reasons.

I still want to know the real reason why Mick left KI. Or do we know?

Seems like Season 3 took long to become a definite thing, and he was committed to DooM by the time it was.

Though tbh, even if the two landed in his lap at the same time. I can imagine scoring DooM would have won out regardless.

Eh dunno, seeing his panel back then and how excited he is/was about KI... But yes Doom gives him more coverage for sure.

Yea, I'm not trying to suggest he wasn't super passionate about KI. But he had actually done it, twice, by then.

Plus DooM wouldn't simply be a case of more coverage. It's a passion project too.

I'll aways believe that Microsoft wasn't willing to commit to season 3 and Bethesda asked Mick to do Doom so he took the job. While the new music is okay, it seems like the new guys lack the understanding of the characters that Mick seemed to have. I miss Mick, but I'm happy that his incredible work is being heard by many many more people.

Has there been any news to suggest a season 4, or is it likely that season 3 will be the end of things? I don't have an Xbox One, but I love that this game exists and continues to receive new content. It's good for fighting games in general.

I don't agree with that part after watching the 'making of' videos. I think they're doing a great job, and understand the characters just fine. Mick is just on another level.

We won't know until the end of the season. But considering they brought out the guest characters in droves I feel this might be the end for now, though that doesn't mean we won't be seeing balance patches.

I think they'll want to continue supporting the game, whether that's a full blown Season 4 I'm not sure. If Microsoft is truly planning a successor to Xbox One next year they would do well to have KI at launch again. I wouldn't think they'd want to scrap all that work for a complete rehaul of the engine so maybe just resolution / texture boost?

Mick was incredible. The new guys did Rash justice but the others? I need the OST to really confirm that.

I've always thought it would be cool if, since we have music select now, they could get Mick to come back and do his versions of the season 3 cast.

I know that would never happen, but it would be great. (Not that I think the current guys are doing a bad job or anything.)
