Watch Dogs 2 Trailer Leaks on Twitch

Well, that was... interesting? Iconic? Interestingly-iconic?

Anyway, looking forward to the proper gameplay reveal that shows the actual Non-E3 graphics settings, and no "actual really player party chat that really represents actual player dialogue if you mute 99.99% of other normal players".

It's too bad that they killed off one of the more compelling characters in WD in one of the most brain-dead most absurd death scenes ever. Clara could have been a cooler protagonist than Aiden, cause she had, you know... personality.

yep that was just about where I said fuck this game.

I get what you're saying, but given their track record I don't really see much of a reason to give Ubisoft the benefit of the doubt here. That probably is a cynical way of looking at things sure, but I don't think I'm really jumping to conclusions so much as taking Ubisoft's business as usual into consideration. I'm still going to keep up with the game because I desperately want it to be something worth playing, I love games that have hacking elements; but this isn't a good first impression, especially when you consider the broader context.

I get what you're saying. I guess I feel the opposite about Ubi. The tower/collection game design bullshit can go die but the realization of their game worlds and diversity are some of the best in the business(speaking strictly of AC, don't have much experience with FC). I dont really feel like their games story/setting were ever generic(besides Desmond), but playing the game, and all we know from this clip is the setting.

I'm pretty shocked at the posts saying this looks just like WD1. Even thirty seconds (the song choice especially) makes it clear this is different, for better or worse.

Watch Dogs was basically a made for TV conspiracy thriller revenge story centered around a bitter, washed up guy.

This seems to be about very loud youth rebellion.

It... doesn't look any more appealing to me than the last game, but yeah, certainly different.

I think the reason why so many people are being so critical of this ad isn't that people are trying to dislike it, it's that they were hoping (myself included) Ubisoft would see this as an opportunity to take a hard look at the mistakes the first game made, focus on instilling a sense of authenticity and awareness, and build a product that at least attempts to deliver on the promise that Watch Dogs' original concept presented to us. This ad gives off the vibe that the second game will just end up being the same focus tested mess the first game was, albeit directed towards a younger and less cynical crowd. My biggest gripe is it just isn't an effective ad, though. It feels like you could interchange the subject with about anything and it would vaguely resemble any other youth-targeted advertisement on TV right now, from soda commercials to fast food.

I might be in the minority, but to me, the hacker fantasy is about access, in a form that's almost (read: usually/nearly always) voyeuristic and perverse. Yeah, there's also the ideology of freedom, expression, and justice, but at the end of the day that will vary from player to player, as it varies among real-world hackers. Watch Dogs built its hype off of that fantasy, and that's something that hasn't really been explored too heavily in games unless you're a fan of stuff like Uplink or Deus Ex. I think the reason people are reacting so negatively is that people still crave that experience; it was never delivered upon, and it doesn't seem like it'll be delivered upon even in a second iteration. The frustration doesn't come from this being a 30 second ad directed towards teens and 20-somethings, it comes from the fact that even when given a second chance, Ubisoft still seems to be missing the appeal of their own franchise.

We all want Watch Dogs to be something more, but the truth of the matter is that the first game excelled at only 2 things: Combat and animation. I think the best case scenario here is that Watch Dogs 2 continues being a slick action game with a paper thin "hacker" theming dropped on top of it because Ubisoft hasn't proven themselves capable of handling much more than that. So a bunch of 20-somthing hacker revolutionaries and/or anarchists caught up in near-future, big brother, gang riddled corrupt San Francisco? Sure, why not. The shooting, stealth, and chases should continue to be entertaining. And with a little luck maybe Ubi will trip and fall into an Assassin's Creed 2 level dumb fun story again.

I mean, c'mon, what are people expecting? Mainline Ubisoft products are kind of a known quantity at this point. This won't be Deus Ex, this won't be Cyperpunk 2077. Just give me some Ray-Bans, a glock, a supercomputer contextual-button-prompt hacking device, fix the car handling, design good missions, make things explode, then ship the game.

Why can't Ubisoft make games that don't make you cringe every 10 seconds? It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't actually take themselves seriously.

Yeah, definitely. They've basically carved out even more of a space for themselves. The tech aspects of the first game were unique, but Aiden's blandness dragged it down. This guy is almost certainly the youngest protag of any open-world game in a realistic, modern setting. And a minority on top of it.

Edit: Saw your edit. Yeah, we'll see. Watch Dogs is the only game this generation I've traded in, which isn't something I *ever* do.

The way y'all were talking about it I was expecting way worse. I mean yea it's bad but it's not that bad except for having no gameplay whatsoever. Ive definitely seen worse

I actually liked Watch Dogs enough to get through to the end, but the plotline was really banal and honestly pretty racist and sexist in terms of undertones, so I'm hoping the cast of the sequel is a lot better in practice.

Beyond that the game just needed a lot more options and polish. It was nice that you could go through about 1/3rd of the campaign without shooting people, but at some point it just ran out of variety.

Not all protagonists should be "the cool guy". Watch Dogs 1 was about invasion of privacy, and the main character is a creep who does most of that invasion himself. I'd rather have him be a bland character than a sexy tattooed girl (and Clara was actually fine for that, having someone somewhat likable in that city full of despicable people). Also for once it actually helps projecting yourself into the situation and wonder "why am I spying those people ? If I need money, is it ok to rob this guy rather than that one ?".

WD2 apparently will have another point of view to that contex, we'll see how it turns out but I feel the general approach won't exactly be the same.

That was a terrible trailer.

Chicago was a much better setting for the main idea behind Watch Dogs.

Disagree.

Couldn't get any better than San Fran as one of the leading high tech cities in the U.S.

Perfect for the premise of Watch Dogs.

I liked the tone. I'm certainly a lot more intrigued by this then I was before. And I say that as someone who liked the first 2/3rds of watch_dogs.

Yeah I'm gonna bring a bit of positivity into this.

I enjoyed the first game enough to Platinum it, and even did the drinking games before they nerfed the difficulty.

The good:
- Best TPS gunplay in an open world game with really smooth cover and snappy aiming
- Multiplayer invasions are such a simple concept but can be extremely tense and fun

The okay:
- Open ended scenarios are generally done well but have since been eclipsed by newer games, hacking gives some nice options in some places but is nothing more than a novelty in others.

The bad
- Characters are all awful
- Story is boring and far too convoluted than necessary
- Janky driving
- Nothing soundtrack
- Insta-fail stealth segments

If Ubi gives us characters with personality and not grim brutes, and an enjoyable story, this could become a very good franchise.

Fair enough, my overall complaint with Ubi isn't the ideas behind their games, but their inability to really deliver on any of the generally compelling concepts they push. I don't hate their games and honestly I think they're great for killing off a weekend or renting during lulls but I just want them to deliver on what they keep promising me.

Definitely don't want it to be Deus Ex or Cyberpunk 2077, as a huge Deus Ex fan I'm glad there aren't too many games that try to imitate their vibe. I just find it disappointing that Ubi consistently pitches awesome ideas, going as far as to fake gameplay for a huge chunk of their games, only to never really follow through on the few great ideas they have.

I am not very smart. I have read 2 different thread titles about this game and I even read the OPs and this whole time I was processing Watch Dogs 2 as Sleeping Dogs 2 :/

honestly looks far more interesting than the first.

Instead of a middle aged man looking for revenge, we get a younger hipster-like character who looks like he's up to mischief.

I'd like it to be an Assassin's Creed 2 type of scenario where the sequel blows the old game out of the water but I have a lot of doubts.

I like Watch Dogs a lot but this the vibe of this trailer did nothing for me. It seemed to urban and I almost couldn't place it in San Francisco, I guess I was hoping they'd go more "touristy" with the location somehow, at least with the reveal.

Assassin's Creed 2 inadvertently caused most of the design issues Ubisoft currently face in most of their games.

'So, what do you hip kids like? We're totally hip here at Ubisoft, dudeeee.'

edit: didn't even see on my small screen that the protag is black. If you're gonna have a game about someone angry at the 'establishment', that's a good place to start.

The sad thing to me about the Watch Dogs series is that there's a lot of really serious issues they could be tackling around mass surveillance. In fact, they alluded to that in their original E3 reveal. That reveal had me thinking momentarily that they were actually going to drop some truth bombs with the first game. And in the second game they seem to be doubling down on meaningless narratives under the guise of edgy punk-hackers. We'll see when they actually roll out the reveal, but I'm not hopeful.
