God, I hope they don't do any of this. Peter Parker's life is very boring.

bro.

pete's life is on another level.

Looks great. Kinda a shame it's exclusive, since Spidey has such a broad appeal.

The thing is, I don't think I'd trust any third party publisher to do it properly. EA and Activision are a huge no, and Ubisoft would probably shit it up with their trademark padding and mechanics. Maybe someone like Bethesda or Warner, although the latter wouldn't happen for obvious reasons.

I hope it has all the vilains

I'd like 4-5 villains at most, if they're done right and each get a chance to shine. And maybe Black Cat showing up to give Spidey a bit of support.

He should also have plenty of opportunity to fight normal grunts too, and I'd like random things to happen in the city like bank robberies, muggings, etc which Spidey can go and help with. They need a good amount of variety though to ensure any such side-missions don't get repetitive.

Im still waiting on the first great Spider-Man game to incorporate the part that makes Spider-Man the best superhero character. Namely, the Peter Parker parts.

I want a game where I have to juggle Peter's romantic interests, make choices about what social gatherings I can attend and not attend cuz of my Spider-Man responsiblities, I want the human supporting cast to be a major part of the game, I wanna pay rent, sell pictures to Jonah and get better shots than a rival photographer...I wanna do all that shit. That is the key to every great Spider-Man adaptation, from comics, to the Spectacular Spider-Man TV show, to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 1/2.

Im afraid this be just like every other Spider-Man game, where its just Spidey doing in-costume stuff. Which, ya know, cool, cuz hes got a dope costume(usually cuz this one is awful), great sense of humor, awesome power set...but you don't really GET Spider-Man until you get Peter Parker.
You want Spider-Man game developed by Atlus? Peter Parker waifu simulator?

what? peter parker is the reason spider man is an enticing character

have you only seen the movies?

Even in Spider-Man 1/2, the various subplots and characters and how they intermingle with Peter Parker's life is what makes them work.

If you just have Spider-Man doing in-costume stuff, you're missing the most important part of the character.

Its different from someone like Batman where "Bruce Wayne" is basically a persona he made up in the public eye and all his real friends/supporting cast(Gordon, Barbara, Dick, Tim, Alfred, Selena) know him as Batman. Peter's relationship with Aunt May, Jonah Jameson, Robbie, Betty Brant, etc is not the same as Spider-Man's relationship with them. Thats why they're are plenty of Batman stories where he's never out of costume, where its rare for the same thing to happen with Spider-Man.

I don't need this to be filled with cameos and shit but I hope they are at least acknowledging he Avengers and other heroes in this world.

I want this to be a fully realized and lived-in Marvel universe, separated from the MCU and studio baggage. I want this to be part of a wider series of games that can include Avengers, Guardians, X-Men and FF, and characters who could possibly interact with Spidey in his game like Daredevil and Wolverine.

Yeah; I don't think this would have happened without Sony's involvement. I guess somehow this is linked to the deal with the Spider-Man films, as otherwise Sony doesn't have any link to Spidey or superhero games.

There was the LEGO: Marvel Super Heros PS3 game and the Sony owned Spider-Man movie releasing next year. Such a smart move to release a video game either right before or right after the movie release

I'm not feeling that suit, honestly. The giant white logo looks like it belongs on the Symbiote Suit more than the traditional suit. But hey, it's a Spider-Man game so it'll probably have a dozen unlockable suits

Costume wish list time.

Spider Armour (the original one)
Future Foundation
Bombastic Bag-Man
Ben Reilly Scarlet Spider
Ben Reilly Spidey
Kaine Scarlet Spider
Big Time
Symbiote
Identity Crisis suits
MCU Spidey
2099 (original, not redesign)
Superior Spider-Man
Negative Zone
Captain Universe
Daredevil (for shits and giggles)

I ask for a bit much, but the PS1 games have spoilt me :p

If they want to incorporate Peter Parker in this and make his role big, they could add stuff like
  • racing to an appointment he has (but comes in late anyway),
  • some sort of dialogue system ala mass effect/witcher where you can talk with other people to gain information or just for fun,
  • investigate a case (tracking somebody down),
  • adding mini-games i.e. developing new webbing or even suits etc.
  • ...

I haven't played all spidey games, but most of them were kinda generic with no good engaging story or characters.

I love Spider-Man, I love Insomniac. I'm so looking forward to this game.

Thanks for all the details so far.

I can gaurentee you the X-Men, mutants, and FF will not be in this game. Disney is still overseeing this which means they will bring the studio baggage. It's just business.

this is insomniac, not sucker punch

ahhhhh crap, I'm an idiot XD I get them confused with each other all the time, despite recentlying playing my first Insomniac game (R+C). Anyone else have this problem?

This kills my enthusiasm somewhat, tbh.

Homage missions from Spderman 2 where you had a limited amount of time to rescue some putz that was hanging from a building. Every time I failed one of these, I would justify as "well, he was an evil man".

Is this confirmed to be an MCU game or anything?

Let me juggle the personal life

Let me worry about running out of web fluid

Is that what it's called now? :D

Jokes aside, a game where the focus is on Pete and not the super-villains like in the Spiderman 2 movie would be really interesting. I doubt that's gonna happen though.

Source?

Man I want them to release more info on this one.

You can tell. All the enemies have that black mask. Big guy who breaks through the doors is the same guy he throws that same massive door at in a quick shot near the end. The vehicles all have the same enemies too. So unless this one gang or whoever they are is the entire main villain (which I doubt) I think we are seeing a full mission here.

Spider-Man trying to get to robbery or whatever it is where the black mask guys are. Enemies bust down the doors and fights them. Then vehicle chase out of there. That part where he is running through the cafe is likely during the chase. Seems like they didn't want to reveal the big villains yet and opted for what very well could be a basic open world side mission with generic enemies to not spoil stuff yet.

That's my thinking on things. They made a deal with Marvel to let them use him in the movies and no doubt part of that deal was to let Sony publish an exclusive game. Hopefully its awesome and a raging success and we get more AAA Spidey games in the future.

Man are you even a Spidey fan? People love the character because Peter Parker is Spiderman. His regular life being what it is is one of the reasons the character resonates with more people. Not too mention Spiderman/Persona would make an awesome combination as you have to juggle your daily routines with being Spidey. Get to class on time and improve your mental skills or stop that bank robber in a car chase with the police? That's one of the big elements of Spiderman and one I wanted to see worked into a game for a long time.

Does it matter if I'm a fan? The game is supposed to be fun to everybody. No, I'm not a diehard fan, but I've bought plenty of comics and I do like the character a lot. I like Peter Parker, I just don't think playing his life/chores would be very fun. I would rather have well directed cutscenes. I don't think Persona social stuff would fit in action super hero games, regardless if I'm a fan or not.

Besides, this is an older Peter Parker, so no classes and stuff.

Well he could be a (substitute) teacher :p

I think it makes perfect sense. Recent Spider-Man games have not been either critical or sales successes. They just brought back Spider-Man and bad Spider-Man games would not be good for his revival. Sony unlike Activision will give the game a nice budget (only one platform also helps this) and will most likely be better then any of those recent Spider-Man games. The high install base on the ps4 will help sales potential.

Makes perfect sense for Sony, not for Disney/Marvel. Assuming sales are similar to the last Batman (~5M) and assuming 60% are on PS4, why would Disney/Marvel leave money on the table by not getting royalties on ~2M unites sold? That also has a domino effect as less kids play the spidey game, which is something they would want.

Marvel could have a contract with Acti, EA, SE, Ubi, T2, etc and they can be very specific that the developer and budget must be agreed upon or the contract is void etc etc. This is not 90s Marvel, their contract would be iron clad.

Why do you say this? the customer pool is still very high on PS4 despite not having MS. Marvel gets Spidey and 100% creative decision making on the movies Sony will only be distributing. Make no mistake... The Spider-Man movie is 100% Marvel story telling. He was arguably the best part of Civil War. His rouges gallery, second only to Batmans, is now available to MCU for villain additions which has been MCUs weakest aspect.

They all win but Marvel were incredibly smart. It would be naive, borderlining on me saying you have brain damage, to even suggest a marvel didn't get the best end of the deal. I got 1.14billion reasons to be that smug.

Brain damage huh? Keep it classy bud. You are very naive to think that CW is gonna make ~1.2B thanks to Spiderman. It was gonna be high regardless, and when they added Ironman and RDJ, we all knew it was gonna be over 1B. CW did more for restoring the faith in Spiderman movies than Spiderman did in boosting the MCU.

As I said above, Marvel/Disney would probably be passing on licensing fees on 2M+ units between Xbone and PC, not something in their best interest.

I will enlighten you about what is publicly known about the Sony-Disney Spiderman deal as you seem to be ignorant about it.

This is what we know for certain:
- Marvel can use Spiderman in the MCU
- Other MCU characters can appear in the Spiderman solo
- Sony is the distributor for Homecoming and retains all previous SM movie rights they had
- Feige and his team are actually producing the movie, free of charge (possibly only getting a contract pay)

This is what's rumored:
- 3 year deal or 3 picture deal where spiderman can appear in the MCU

Deal seems very one sided, in Sony's favor.
Sony gets:
- Spiderman rebooted, made relevant again (I personally think it can do close or over 1B WW) and - if the rumor is true - in 3 years or 3 movies, Sony can take full control of the character again
- Ironman and one of the hottest actors reprising his most famous role in the Spiderman movie
- Kevin Feige and his team doing the work, at no extra cost
- Other MCU characters in the spiderman movies, free of royalty charge
- Apparently spiderman (and other Marvel characters) for games. This is very beneficial to Sony, and if you remember Kaz Hirai has mentioned that VGs is one of the 3 sony pillars, so one can easily assume VGs is more important to Sony than movies

Marvel gets:
- Spiderman in the MCU

As shown by a graph on this very thread, Spiderman merchandise was selling regardless. At the point the deal was made, Sony was hurting, just got hacked, things were in disarray. Marvel was booming, and they didn't really need spiderman to be honest, so why would they give so much for so little in return?

We know Marvel/Disney won't get a cent from the BO profits (and I think the home distribution too? Not sure about this one, but for sure not from the theatrical run). As a matter of fact, Disney pays Sony a fee from the BO gross for spiderman solo movies (This was part of the merchandise buyout deal).

I think there's more to this deal than meets the eye. 2016 Marvel, and especially Disney, wouldn't give up all that if there wasn't more to it. They probably negotiated to remove the fee Disney has to pay, and are probably positioning themselves to reacquire all spiderman rights from Sony. The rumored 3 picture/3 year deal is kinda weird, I don't think Marvel would do that and would want the deal to only break if they decided to break it. Sony will want spiderman to keep going, i.e., assuming the trilogy for spiderman takes 6-7 years, if Marvel takes as long a break between Spiderman 3 and 4 like they are doing for Ironman and most likely for Captain America, then the rights would reverse back (A spiderman must start production every 3 years, or 5 years if at the end of a trilogy that happened in an 8 year period).

They are getting more than just exclusive spiderman?

Someone mentioned the PR specifically says games, not game.

I don't think the story of how Sony wound up with publishing rights for a Spider-Man game will ever be fully told. Logical reasoning seems to dictate that this occurred as part of the negotiation between Sony & Marvel for the sharing of Spider-Man film rights to Marvel & the MCU.

Remember, prior to this, Activision had the rights to publish Spider-Man games, which they exercised almost annually until 2012 with 'The Amazing Spider-Man' film/game tie in that Activision/Beenox did. After that movie releasing is when talks between Marvel & Sony started for the transfer film rights transfer to the MCU. It's not hard to imagine that Sony negotiated for these rights during that time, seeing as how they were going to lose a good portion of the rights to merch. sales in that transfer.

This is what I think as well. This, and possibly other games, are part of the deal from last February.

Every level should start with you walking down the street as Peter, then you see some supervillain rob a bank or something, you run down a back alley, turn into Spider-Man, and then webswing out the other end of the alley.
