An actual comic book fan director making the movie? Looks like hollywood has learned a thing or two from Ironman and Dark Knight.

Great news. Here's hoping for a Serenity 2 after this.

Should try for JJ Abraham. He works ensemble casts well and has a good action eye.

Now that is something I'd like to see.

Hell nah. Keep that guy away from everything please. His MI3 wasn't too bad though.
He is still better and more talented than Joss Whedon.

I am curious to see Whedon direct with a budget though. But again, as long as he has no hand in the writing of the film.

I find it strange that Marvel is giving this project to somebody so...unsafe like Whedon though. And the fact that they were considering Leterrier before is even more telling. Why is this project being treated so lightly?

I don't think it will be very good anyways, Marvel over-saturation at it's best here.

Leterrier did Incredible Hulk for them, and they must have liked the result. I am sure they went through their stable of directors that are used to the characters first. It would be funny if they somehow got Sam Raimi or Bryan Singer to make it though.

I think Whedon will be great for this, and should even have his hand in the script as well. I don't get all the hate. His attention to character development has always been great, but I guess no one wants that in their comic book movies. The man knows and loves the medium, has shown he's competent with established characters, and has even written for them (well, if I may add). What else do you want?

edit- And how exactly is he unsafe? The only series that was shit was Dollhouse, however S2 was very good. The bulk of the blame lies with Dushku.

I want all dialogue by Whedon excised. His story ideas and characters are cool, I will give him that, but once they speak in their cool hip dialogue and references all the time, I just want to stab my ears with an icepick. I know he loves the medium and has written for them, but that doesn't change the fact that he is overrated.

Eh, I can't disagree. His dialogue can be shit, though it didn't bother me much with firefly/serenity. He tries way too hard to have a unique voice/style with his dialogue, which can be witty at times (rarely). I don't think think he's overrated, at least not critically or commercially, though he does have an inexplicable cult following.

So, Black Widow to be insanely overpowered in the Avengers movie? I'll laugh if she starts trading blows with the Hulk.

I am overjoyed for Joss Whedon directing the Avengers movie. His first real chance to showcase his skills in a big feature film not based on his IPs. His Astonishing X-Men run was superb, and I kinda wish that would become a film itself.

JJ Abrams is good, but he doesn't know how to finish a story, at least for TV shows. Abrams is better suited for movies than TV. We'll see how Whedon fares, because Serenity was a great movie, but a better TV series.

I read the title and became excited because I expected this:

Then I remembered this:

and was glad that this is about some comic movie.

I'm sure she will be....sigh.

Are you guys crazy? Nobody here has really read astonishing xmen or what??? There was a reason the value on those things were pretty high, the writing was EXCELLENT. At the time only walking dead had me really on edge waiting for the next issue. Whedon writes group interactions so well, and bring in awesome action and comedy at the proper times.

Directing ability?? Not sure about that i suppose. Id much prefer him to just at least write avengers and have someone else direct it maybe? At the same time I'd want to see what he could really do with a huuuge budget and ability to create some great action scenes. But he has been in the buisness along time and hasnt reached a high level directing job. To me anyways.

In this thread, several people have used the term "whedonverse" in a serious manner. This enrages me.

And I second the JJ Abrams suggestion.

My school actually has a course on Buffy, and "whedonverse" is part of the lexicon. :lol

Please no. I don't want to feel the need to cut off my ears after listening to the dialog. I'd be fine with him producing/consulting.

If anyone hating Whedon likes Lost, Seinfeld, or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, your opinion has just been invalidated for liking Lost, Seinfeld, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

So there.

If Whedon isn't actually writing it, if someone else is handling the actual dialogue, the I'm cautiously optimistic. I'd feel safer with Abrams though

in case anyone's interested,

ED NORTON IS NOT THE HULK IN THE AVENGERS, BUT HE'D LIKE TO BE

After all the careful groundwork that Marvel Studios has laid the last few years, and after the way they've built this great cast film after film, they're going to make a colossal misstep at the finish line. According to Marvel sources, the company has decided that they are going to cast "an unknown" to play Bruce Banner and The Hulk in the film.

I sat down with Norton at SXSW this year, and one of the things we discussed was this exact scenario. At the time, he seemed to me to be interested in being part of "The Avengers" if the script and the director came together in an interesting way. This was before Whedon was hired, so it was all just hypothetical. Thing is, according to these same sources, Whedon's been meeting the cast, laying out his plans for the film, and so far everyone seems incredibly excited by what they're hearing. Hell, James Gunn and Nathon Fillion were Tweeting recently about how they hung out with Joss and what they heard convinced them that "The Avengers" is going to be insane.

One of the people who Whedon met with was Norton, and I'd love to know what they talked about. What I do know is that both Whedon and Norton reported their enthusiasm back to Marvel, and according to some calls I made today, it even sounds like Norton was making serious plans with his agency to keep his dates clear. And then...

... nothing. Marvel made a decision to hire an unknown, and they informed Norton that they won't be using him in the film. And that is evidently that.

Have we really ever seen Whedon direct anything he didn't mostly write though?

Personally hes awful with actual stories, it's characters that people like about his work.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer :lol By the time the studio got done chewing up his script it wasn't even what he wrote and he pretty much said "This isn't mine anymore."

He didn't direct that though, he just wrote the original script treatment.

Is anyone really that surprised that Norton won't be coming back as Banner? Let's be honest, his portrayal of Bruce Banner isn't really a make it or break it deal for most people. It's not like RDJ as Iron Man. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if The Avengers is 95% Hulk, and 5% Bruce.

I for one am disappointed, but not surprised by the news. Norton wants to play the role, but apparently is a control freak. If he works for less and is more hands off, they should let him play the role again.

I enjoyed him in Incredible Hulk I thought he did a great job. Im not shocked though. The guy is a massive control freak and a dick on top of that.

I stand by my post! But now they have to pay Whedon.

Unless they got him for one of those hilarious 10 picture/$500K deals that they signed a bunch of actors for.
