Kirby: Planet Robobot |OT| A Transformative Mechstravaganza

I got the game on Saturday and finished the main mode last night. I didn't expect to finish it so quick, and I kind of wish I'd played it a little slower. I guess I kind of rushed through, tapping the d-pad to dash all the time. The game's graphics are good enough that I think I would enjoy going through it slower. Also, I got most of the Code Cubes on the way and even though I'm complaining about it being over too soon, it might have been cool to have some left to give me a reason to go back to the stages. I'm at 74% completion already, and played about 10 and a half hours over 3 days.

Just finished the main story. I know everyone's already been heaping praise on the game but... fuck, what a fun game.

Robot theming was great, felt like it added a lot of variety and cohesion to the usual Kirby level tropes. The mech itself worked really well, it didn't feel divorced from typical Kirby gameplay unlike some recent gimmicks, but always offered a change of pace. Presentation was also super solid, looks really nice visually and had a good amount of story and dialog for a Kirby game imo. I can't believe that a 2016 3DS game not only actually tried to do something with 3D but actually used it really well?? and man i know they do it every game but somehow the kirby series always manages to pull all sorts of nostalgia strings without it feeling tired (
the nova reveal in particular fucked me up
)

god kirby rules

And now people see why I had this game on my GOTY list. Super solid and fun game even after my third run of
Metanightmare mode, god I love that mode so much
.

I shot people I like more for less.
I finished the main story earlier with all the cubes and shortly after got all the stickers. Just have a couple extras to take care of now. Hell of a game, just a complete pleasure to play. The end/last boss sequence was just so damn good. When
Kirby scanned the Halberd I had a daaaaaaaaaaamn moment lol. And then Nova showing up was awesome too. So good.
Soundtrack was great too. Though I do have to say the music for the puzzle rooms is a lot worse in this compared to Triple Deluxe, though that's not a big deal :p I hope people give this one a shot.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
Still disappointed this game left out one of the most obvious choices from SuperStar to bring back
no Heavy Lobster pisses me off.

I finished the main story and collected the code cubes faster than I expected, but I had a fun time overall :3

ESP Kirby is so strong lol I don't think I should ever lose if I get access to that power. It can also complete the puzzles requiring electricity, so that's a nice side bonus.

I like Jet Kirby, but I could've sworn it had Condor Dive or some other diving attack in previous Kirby games. Yes that matters to me.

Doctor is probably the ability with the most utility in the game, even if one can't explicitly choose which effect one wants.

Poison is probably fairly strong, but by the time I could get Poison I could also get ESP, which I valued over Poison by a lot.

I definitely like the Mech and the associated Mech powers more than the Ultra Kirby powers from Triple Deluxe. The Mech is quite strong and necessary to deal with certain environment pieces, but it's not complete invulnerability and some of the Mech powers were cool. The Mech also had its own weaknesses relative to Kirby as well, such as being a bigger target and not having infinite floating.

Cutter Mech can fire the saw blades at multiple angles and being able to hold out the saw blade in front while moving around made certain fights and segments trivial. This is the Mech power I defaulted to if I had a choice and wasn't dealing with a puzzle that wanted a specific power.

Spark Mech fires projectiles in a straight line and can charge up a super beam that hurts quite a bit. Spark Mech had a full screen projectile that wasn't dependent on terrain, so that was also useful sometimes.

Jet Mech was fun, but it's only used in specific segments of the game.

ESP Mech was quite a head scratcher for me. I think that particular Mech power didn't seem very useful, but someone else could probably point out how it's meant to be used.

Overall, I have to say that... I died quite a fair bit more often than I'd like to admit, though I never died to taking too much damage.
I came really close to dying by damage on the final segment, since I was fighting ~3 bosses in a row and already used up my healing item on the first boss in that segment. I could cheese the earlier bosses with ESP Kirby though, so I probably spent my healing item too quickly. The fight against Star Dream got super weird near the end, and the final blow was also quite brutal 83

Some of the code cubes were hidden in really obscure ways as well, such that I had to go online and look at video walkthroughs for 3 of them I think :<

I did the Clash mini game stuff (got to max level, beat all bosses, got platinum rank on 3 or 4) and finished World 3. Definitely a fun game. This and Triple Deluxe together are really good 2D platformers with a lot of really fun copy abilities and gameplay elements shared between both games.

Yeah, but
what about Susie? She was the actual stakeholder and possible architect of the invasion. She was just as on-board for "eradicating" the natives and turned Metaknight into a silly cyborg because she thought he was cool. Then, she back-stabs Haltmann and basically kills him (never bothering to tell him she's his daughter) and never shows any regret. She gives everyone a thumbs up, similes, and jets off in the end. She got off completely scott free. The girl's a sociopath.

The whole time I was hoping she'd remain the villain and not pass the villain card onto someone else. It was pretty predictable that the cute girl would end up needing to be saved from the real villain which was both predictable, and this case really screwed up.

Yeah I've been trying to reconcile that, but I can't. Susie obviously held some grudge from being flung between dimensions so that was her motivation to set up the invasion (to lure someone like Kirby to the point where she could steal Star Dream), but the whole time Haltmann would've abandoned the whole thing to bring his daughter back who was standing in front of him the whole time, his obsession with her going to the point of putting her face on currency and using her image in his mech's attacks.

There's a bit of dissonance there, since the game acknowledges it by using her image but for some reason Haltmann can't see his daughter standing two feet in front of him while singing.
It's kinda fucked up.

It's possible they were saying something about the corrupting nature of Japanese corporate culture. Maybe that's what I'll cling onto.

I tore through the first two worlds and realized I need to slow down a bit and savor it. Did the same thing with DOOM and all great games really.

Maybe he hit his head or something? Who knows?

That said, about the final boss:
So, do we think it's the original Galatic Nova, or a sister unit? Originally I was leaning towards the former, but thinking about it, the Final Boss does attack with the 'random debris' that was attached to the original nova. Unless there's something special about weather vanes and light bulbs, I don't see why else it should. It's possible that Haltmann Co. simply recovered the CPU core from space after Kirby blew up the original. Then again, it doesn't seem to recognize Kirby.

Ah well, who knows?

I've been thinking; Kirby is only a few inches tall, right? I suppose, then, many of the objects in the game are appropriately sized and not really too giant, like the ice cream cones. That still doesn't explain why the stuff attached to Galatic Nova is so large....I think I'm starting to analyze Kirby too much now.

Because the Susie we see is not the same as Haltmann's daughter. Using Star Dream he made a clone of her, but even though she looked like Susie and sounded like Susie, Star Dream couldn't copy her soul. The Clone Dedede and EX Clone Dedede flavor text alludes to the incomplete nature of Star Dream's cloning process, as does the flavor text for Dark Matter and Sectonia clones. "It has the look and voice of King Dedede, but not his soul. Some things can't be cloned."

Haltmann found the Star Dream and during experiments with it there was an accident and Susie died, he then became obsessed with fully mastering Star Dream's technology in an attempt to clone her, but the clone finally created wasn't his daughter as she didn't have the same soul so to avoid confronting his grief he devoted himself to the company and only the company, perhaps in the hope that if Star Dream gathered more data and got stronger it could make a perfect clone but since it was taking so long (and ultimately was impossible) Haltmann eventually lost sight of that goal over the years only to finally remember it when Star Dream's Soul OS was deleting him.

In the Japanese version after Star Dream activates and flies away, Susie mentions that one reason she wanted to ruin Haltmann's company because she hoped that doing so would "wake him up". The English version changed this to "teach the old man a lesson" which is too vague and makes her seem even more cruel or petty based on how one interprets it.

Lore, baby!

That said, about the final boss:

This is something I've been thinking about for a while (and I've been half writing up a tread regarding the recent overarching plot in the Kirby games), but (final boss spoilers ahead)

I'm inclined to think that Access Ark is actually a rebuilt Nova, or a unit built to identical specifications. Star Dream seems to have been created from a collection of the Ancient's technology (the same group of people who made the original Nova, the Lor Starcutter and possibly some of the super weapons Kirby wields throughout the series). Likely at some point after initially activating Star Dream which sent Susie hurling through the dimensions, they stumbled upon remnants of Nova which Star Dream provided the layout for.

In a way it's an extension of the Marx story, since we see how swiftly and completely Nova's wish could have been granted with the mechanization of Pop Star, granting Susie and Haltmann complete control over the world in a matter of seconds.

But I'm still trying to tie the details together so that's far from gospel.

Lore, baby!

Ah, now that makes a good deal of sense. The only thing it doesn't really tie together is
how clone Susie is aware of beings from Another Dimension and how she eventually input all the data into Star Dream, but that can probably be explained with a bit of rereading.

Holy hell this games True Arena is the first one in any Kirby game to give me any trouble, mainly due to the final segment.
The first half of the fight against the SDOS is easy but once it starts summoning all those meteors along with lasers and other attacks it starts getting harder to avoid taking a hit and coming off Galatic Knight that drink ain't doing much. Given that it's four fights back to back to back with no breaks and one completely new boss I really feel like they should have given a maximum tomato for it.

Try using Hunter and abuse Camo; if you're patient Hunter get's an easy win against the last few bosses. Be careful for DDDX3 though.

I shot people I like more for less.
Got 100% completion tonight. I barely finished the
true arena due to a mixture of lazy play on my part and the rubber coming off of my dumb circle pad during one boss lol. I ended up finishing being able to take only one more hit. Glad I didn't have to do that more than once :p

Just finished World 5.

Been playing this in between Hyrule Warriors Legends and Fire Emblem Fates Birthright.

Might be my favorite game of 2016 so far.

I've had to redo a few levels to get cubes or rare stickers and it is always just a joy to replay a level again after just completing it.

It feels kinda funny jumping from the gory bloody world of Doom to the cute and cuddly world of Kirby, lol.

Only finished up to level 1-3 but it seems fun. I like the new robot.

The music is great, the power ups are great (Poison is beautiful), smash ability is back, the mech is an amazing new addition.

This is one of the best Kirby games ever.

Even the story was nice, as a Kirby game's take on colonization, technology and its usage, and corporations.

This game was made by HAL but that finale almost tricked me into thinking it was Platinum games or something, they've been escalating these things heavily since Return to Dreamland/Adventure Wii.

Got to round up the rest of the cubes and stuff, but I can safely say already that this is one of the strongest Kirby titles and blows well past Triple Deluxe for me.

(but why oh why do they keep bringing whip back whilst dropping beetle from TD?)

I agree, I'd rather have beetle or wing instead of whip.

Just beat The True Arena with the tiniest sliver of health left.

Those last few seconds where the final boss refuses to die were so nerve wracking. Why is a Kirby game making me feel this way?

As long as Whip is our stand-in for Yo-Yo it deserves its place in EVERY game. ...but yeah I would've been happy if beetle stuck around.

Not that I'm against abilities rotating in and out of the games. I do think it's neat that despite having basically identical mechanics, RtDL, TD and PRBB all have unique ability sets, and it was nice to see two of my favorites from KSS return to the rotation.

Something I find funny in the
True Arena
is that
Star Dream still has the slash mark in it made by Galacta Knight in Meta Knight mode

caveat: dan's quest involves him running from kirby the entire game, who aims to reenact the battle from KSS's arena

This reminds me of the scene in Superstar Ultra when King Dedede sends a teary eyed Bandana Dee to fight Kirby even though he knows he's gonna get killed. They actively try and make you feel sorry for them I swear. Even though he's fine in the very next scene

Holy crap the finale was freaking amazing.
I lost my fucking shit when Mecha Kirby scanned the Halberd and got chills when Nova showed up. I know Kirby games always seem to know how to end their games on a perfect note, but GEEEEEEZ. I was half expecting the Gurren Lagann OP song to play when Kirby DRILLED THROUGH THE FINAL BOSS LIKE NOTHING.

Overall, Planet Robobot was fantastic and is probably one of my favorite Kirby games ever now. I liked it a lot more than Triple Deluxe, a game I already really liked. Loved the new powers (ESP and Doctor being my favs), the Mecha gimmick is all sorts of rad, and the music is as top notch as always. One of my favorite 3DS games ever now. <3 It was just so much fun to play from start to finish and I had a smile on my face the entire time.

This game's True Arena is ridiculous. SSU took a few tries because Marx Soul surprised me, RtDL's was fine aside from a sudden appearance from Galacta Knight, TD was also okay because most of its bosses weren't that bad outside of Pyribbit (who is just a chore to fight since you have to wait while he hops in the background half the time) and Dark Meta Knight.

But god damn, the final battle is a brutal marathon. Having to fight four phases of Star Dream back-to-back with only an energy drink to help you out is tough, especially when I can only barrel roll in one direction due to a broken R button :( that's not even talking about OS 4 and all the shit that comes with it. I don't think I've ever struggled this much clearing anything in a Kirby game except trying to 100% Canvas Curse (My heart broke when my save data got corrupted at 98%...).

But yeah, Planet Robobot is easily a top 3 main Kirby game in my opinion. Great level design, great OST, great implementation of the gimmick, and boy is there lore.

EDIT: can we have another console Kirby game though I want HD Kirby

Sucks about your save data, sorry to hear that. I never could beat Paint Panic level 3 in Canvas Curse :( it just never registered right for me. I think best I ever did was like a C rank.

The subgames seem like the hardest part of Canvas Curse. All the other challenges are really well designed and they give you just enough time/rainbow to beat them.

Got the game on Saturday due to the glowing praise in this thread mostly.

Played mostly on the bus ride to work...Just completed the Story and got all the Code Cubes, but I don't think I'll play more due to other games to play.

All I can say is that while never the most challenging of games, Kirby games are always a delight and Triple Deluxe, Rainbow Curse (or Paintbrush for PAL Regions) and now Planet Robobot perfectly encapsulates this.

Also after beating the Last Boss after all the hype I saw for it and not wanting to spoil myself...

...I didn't expect anything as good as that! Wow!

Wanting my NX Kirby now, HAL! Keep it up!

Finished the main story. It was fun but the final boss went on for way too long. Made the mistake of throwing away my power after the first part and had to do the rest without one. Barely survived the ground phases without dying and BARELY lived the final phase with a tiny fraction of health left.

In terms of powers, my biggest disappointment was no Beetle. It was my favorite new power in Triple Deluxe and I'm sad it didn't come back in this game. I leaned heavily on Mirror through a lot of the game, which I never used a ton in previous games. Fighter, which has always been one of my favorite powers, felt like it was barely in it. Found the secret area with the Smash power but didn't really care for it. Liked the Robot suit a lot more than the super suction in Triple Deluxe. Just wish there was a little more variety with the powers.

Since this game was all about Metaknight and TD was Dedede, that means Bandana Dee is next, right?

RIGHT?

That actually makes alot of sense. Place King Dedede and Metaknight in the background throwing healing items and make Bandana Dee a pivotal role.

It's been too long.

The bosses were definitely the highlight of this game for me. Can't wait to unlock True Arena.

I even like the last boss, usually I hate when games change mechanics (Bayonetta for instance).

The ability to guard and counterattack with ESP is absolutely amazing. I kinda wanna do an Arena run where I do nothing but counter!

The mechs were a lot less substantial than I hoped, but at least they don't drag the game down the way Supernova did for me. The shmup and racing sections were definitely the best use for them.

Got all the stickers/cubes. That was pretty fun collecting and some of them were pretty cleverly hidden lol. Also, 6-8 was great.
Melee Green Greens gave me some nostalgia bombs lol

Gonna do Metaknight mode first and then I'll tackle the Arena.

End game spoilers and question:
Is there no way to save Robobot (he cry when he save Kirby)? Also is there an alternate ending at 100% or does it not matter?

Awesome game, and had a blast running through it and the end boss was great.

In true Kirby fashion,
there's an alternate final boss at the end of the post-game modes. Can't say what happens after because I'm still stuck on it

NOPE. And for the other guy; beating the extra boss at the end of True Arena does not give any sort of cutscene or ending.

I noticed Satoru Iwata was listed as the Executive producer in the staff credits.

Just beat the game! Had a lot of fun with it. Wish there were main bosses that could be fought with the mecha but other than that and the bad framerate with 3D no complaints.

Was I the only one who decided to take on the bosses with no copy powers to make then more challenging?

This game sits unopened on my bedroom floor, along with all my Kirby amiibo. Soon, Kirby, soon...

This is something I've been thinking about for a while (and I've been half writing up a tread regarding the recent overarching plot in the Kirby games)

*snip*

Ooo, please do this. Despite having played many of the Kirby games, I've done a terrible job of keeping track of the continuing plot elements. A thread about it would not only be fun but helpful.
