Man can't even be happy for porsche with this kind of ending..

Nope. Toyota ran a perfect race until the car broke down and there's really nothing you can do about that. It sucks. At least Ford came through in GT Pro but ugh, what a terrible way to end the race.

He needed to have stopped before the start/finish line and then crawled across when the Porsche went to take the flag, looks like they will miss the six minute last lap rule now.

That's the worst kind of win, you can't say they don't deserve it but to get a win like that, goddamn. Sucks for Toyota, really unbelievable what just happened.

I think they make an exception under certain circumstances. If they do make it all the way around, this would seem to qualify

E: they did make it around. So there's that

Can only imagine what the Toyota crew are feeling right now. Utter despair, shock and disbelief, I suppose.

Motor racing can be so harsh and cruel.

I support Audi, and to be honest, don't really care about Toyota, but this is way to cruel for them.

But, people, we are witnessing motorsport history at its finest.

Me too but Audi doesn't deserve the podium. Hope the #5 made it in six minutes to the flag.

Said on EuroSport that the Toyota result is a DNQ!

Why didn't he stop before the start/finish line to get help/advice!

WHAT? Oh for fuck sake.

The last lap of #5 was 11:53.815 on the live timing screen.

If he had stopped before the start/finish line and got help he could have done the lap in under six minutes maybe? they said he was stopped on the line for over two minutes and then he got moving and then stopped again to talk.

I know it's the rules and all, but the idea of a car getting a DNF despite completing more laps than cars behind them because it couldn't coincidentally finish what was last lap that couldn't have made up the difference is just cruel after 24 hours.

Anthony Davidson's twitter is just heartbreaking:

On the hand yes but on the other it's an essential rule, otherwise you could end up with cars that hand broken down in the pits winning the race even though there is no chance they could ever drive again.

To finish first first you must finish.

I feel like given that they crossed the line (in this case), they ought to be classified as having finished. The time limit is fair, but if you allow that there are special circumstances where the limit doesn't apply (which the rules do), these are those.

I still can't believe what I just saw, this was just an absolute gut punch. The only silver lining for me was Ford GT taking the class win. I was really pulling for Toyota, Porsche/Audi are the boring winners...

The six minute rule was introduced some years back, teams used to pull their cars into the pits and clean them and also if they were so many laps ahead slow down as not to push the car to hard, also to stop teams lining up the cars for a photo, if you don't lap in under six minutes you don't get a classified finish/result, there are rules to allow but maybe if the car had not stopped and just carried on, but the driver stopped twice and then drove off showing that the car was able to drive under it's own power, I think the rule is still there that the driver can push the car over the line as long as there is enough fuel in the tank for it to have made it across the line, it may have changed now so that the car has to be under it's own internal power, but I am not sure.

Shit. That's up there with Hildebrand losing the Indy 500 at the last corner a few years back.

Absolutely gutted for Kazuki and the rest of the #5 team. Congrats to Porsche.

I can see they changing the rule now.

I was really pulling for Ford and Toyota. For Toyota to lose it like that...cruel.

I assumed they would go in the pits to fix whatever the problem was for the last lap, but maybe the issue was so big that a quick fix wasn't going to get it done.

It's like there's a curse on Toyota motorsports if they're on the cusp of something big. Like Carlos Sainz back in 1998, losing the WRC title to Tommi Makinen 300m from the finish of final stage of the final rally of that season...

What a race... I still can't quite believe what happend in the end. Le Mans does it again. I hope Toyota comes back with a fury next year. I know I will be there next year!

I idiotically switched to the F1 before this ended so I'm fuzzy on the details. Did #5 cross the finish line after 24 hours (i.e won the race), but because of some dumb rule didn't make it back to parc ferme in an alotted time due to a technical issue?
