New update featuring some more enemy art and music, including funky new renditions of Big Earl Bump, Rapmaster Rocket Racket, and Aquajam. They're really letting the bass do the talking for this soundtrack.

It seems there will also be some video footage coming in the next couple of weeks, along with a release date announcement in the summer. Apparently things are looking good for console versions of the game as well.

Greg posted on his Twitter that we're getting another update sometime this upcoming week.

I also asked him via Twitter about TJ&E on the PSN/Microsoft Store being cross-buy, since right now they're PS3/360 specific, and his response made it sound like he wasn't even aware of that, and that he'll look into bringing them to PS4/XB1.

I have no idea what the process is behind that, but if they share trophies and everything it can't be that complicated. (and PS4 could really use some more couch co-op PSN titles)

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I thought something bad had happened, but I was wrong!

Yasssssss slay big earl slay

they've been chugging along without many hiccups for a long while now, surely they're getting somewhere. They shipped out the backer rewards months ago, I was wearing my TJ&E t-shirt just a few days ago in fact.

Saw this interview posted on facebook. I didn't like the interviewer much since he seemed to want to insert his agenda into his questions, but the screenshots look amazing. I can't wait. Also, sounds like there's potential for it to be released on consoles as well? I can't wait till the next update.

I see some like the new art style, but I wish they'd have stuck with the first game's aesthetic. Also, I don't see the point in showing the bottom world. It's just seemingly useless information. (Unless the lower levels serve more of gameplay advantage than a punishment.)

i think if they just made the bottom world a lot more washed out or faded it would be fine
the way it is now its too busy and distracting to look at

Nice update, I assume this will be shown in August then (possibly with a release date?) at Gamescom.

I hope they remix Funky Alien from the second one. That was my favorite song from the Genesis Era TJ&E games.

Glad to see it's coming along so well, the roguelike elements seem to fit right in. Soundtrack continues to be perfect, definitely in for the vinyl.

Humanature has a relationship with Sony from Doki Doki Universe, interested to see who they partnered with for TJ&E. Got to post some of those screenshots, they've really refined the look of the game since earlier in development.

I had no idea that was the art style they were using. it's REALLY reminiscent of doki doki

I have no real reverence do TJ&E but this looks real nice

Wait what the.... I had no idea this was a thing! I'm pumped for this and it's my first time hearing about it!

Toejam and Earls new update is up. Seems as though they got some funding by one of the big three as they were told to wait on showing a video. Nintendo?

If the game is now publisher-backed, the mystery party is far more likely to be a smaller publisher. 505/Deep Silver/Nordic/etc. I don't think MS/Nintedo/Sony have put their weight behind a Kickstarter game that's still in production (Shenmue 3 being something of an exception) and, well, I doubt they'd start with a title that sits at the narrower end of the success spectrum ($400k goal, $500k funded).

I'm a huge TJ&E fan and I was actually a little unimpressed with the original look of the game. I'm seeing this now and DAMN does it look awesome! I can't wait to play this.

This is looking pretty good. I think the changes they made to the polygon portions of the environments do look much better than what they had shown before. I think the pumped up colour scheme kinda works here and stays true to the original game. Also the funk-groove soundtrack is awesome.

Holy shit, Groove Ship. I'll admit I'm one of those few that enjoyed playing Panic on Funkotron growing up.

Damn, I got such a TJ&E1 vibe from the latest batch of screenshots. They're really making this at an impressive pace. Hats as a meta-goal for game clears sounds amazing, and unlockable characters is always a plus. And the art style is finally starting to feel cohesive.

I'm so goddamn excited for this game, I'm buying it for a friend to play co-op when it releases.

This and Shenmue are the only 2 kickstarters I've ever backed. I'm glad this one is turning out so great. I loved Doki Doki, so I really hope Sony is the one funding them.

Looks like they've nailed the aesthetic.

Is this more or less a remake of the first game rather than a whole new game?

think more along the lines of the first actual sequel to the first game
plays similarly, but they can finally refine and build upon the mechanics from the first game. seems like there's a few new systems in there, and tweaks on the old ones

i am so fucking excited

This is looking a lot more cohesive now. I have to force myself to not get overly hyped for this.

Words fail me how happy I continue to be with how the music is turning out

Wow looking great and really happy to have a console release confirmation. A dream come true would be a Vita release (and compatibility for TJ&E 1 and 2).

I wonder if there is any chance that Sega is the funding partner.

I'm sorry you thought that, definitely wasn't my intention.

I have no history with TJ&E, but these screens have me intrigued.
Any more word on the mystery backer?

The green A button makes me think Xbox, but it could be because they are playing a PC build with an Xbox controller.

Did someone mention TJ & E 2: Escape from Planet Funkotron?

Probably one of the best platformers ever made.

So many hidden secrets....

Can I get a +1 for the TJ & E 2 love?

My brother and I's favorite game on the genesis. Honestly don't think I've ever played the first one.... It was never in stock at blockbuster

Hi, sorry if I came off harsh. Since you're here, let me elaborate.

Questions like
You’ve been in the industry for over 20 years, and only recently changes are becoming more abrupt and disruptive. Where do you think its headed, especially for the games that you want to make?

and

We’re also in an age where everything can play the same, sound the same, and even be marketed the same. How will Back in the Groove be different?

Are a bit leading, draw attention away from the interviewee and can be uncomfortable for the subject to answer, especially when he's an industry veteran like Greg is. Now, Greg seems like the nicest guy in the world so he worked with it but another subject might cut you off there or be less willing to have a good conversation with you. Here's an example of such a thing happening. Your questions would have been much better if you left out or had better phrasing for the first sentences

Keep reaching out to people though. Being able to interview your heroes is great. Just be aware that the questions you ask shouldn't be more interesting than the answers the person you are interviewing is willing to give.

From the comments section, here are the old songs that are being redone for the game:

Alien Breakdown
Aquajam
Big Earl Bump
Boomin' Bump
Funk Down Under
Funk Funk Funk E
Lewanda's Love
Mellow Groove
Ode to Sharla
Peabo's Party Jam
Rapmaster Rocket Racket
Rocket Rap
TJ&E Theme Refunkified

Also, Greg confirmed that any backers who wanted console versions will be able to switch their pledge to those if they choose. Great news for me since I'm not much of a PC gamer.
