RTTP: Grand Theft Auto V

1311DD998C7A20EB4ABA110B1C151999801035DC

I first played through GTA V back in 2013 when it originally released on Xbox 360 and PS3. I loved playing through the story mode, but didn't really get into the side activities of the singleplayer or GTA Online.

This year, I had the pleasure of replaying the game on PC, and I have to say, my thoughts on the game haven't changed one bit. This is still one of my favorite games of all time, and I firmly believe that it is one of the best games ever made. Let's talk about why.

First of all, the story. Every single mission except for one (if you've played the game, you know the one) is enjoyable, and the characters are stupidly well-acted. I feel the same way about the characters in GTA V as I do about the characters in games like The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 - they are so well-acted, and so well animated as a result of motion capture, that I don't even think of them as videogame characters and I just start seeing them as people. It's unreal to me how far we have come in the past 20 years when it comes to this sort of stuff, and I have to wonder how we're ever going to meaningfully improve upon it from here. Of course, the dialogue is also very well-written and successfully sells the three main characters of the story as the terrible people they are. The story creates this weird feeling, at least for me, where I don't really care about the characters' individual well-being, but I care immensely about their relationships with one another. I feel sorry for them for being such awful human beings, to the point where I want to see them be good friends because if these assholes can't get along with each other, there's no way they are gonna get along with anyone else.

The ending (the real ending, as I like to call it) finishes off the game perfectly in exactly the way you would expect from criminals like Michael, Franklin and Trevor. It puts a smile on my face every time I see them finally put an end to the tools who have been giving them the runaround from the very beginning.

Next I'd like to discuss the graphics and the world that Rockstar have created for GTA V. It is abundantly clear from playing the PC version that the 7th generation consoles were seriously holding this game back, because this is still a fantastic-looking game in 2016. There is just a ridiculous level of detail everywhere, from the foliage to the car models to the road textures to the visible difference between materials used on people's clothes. When I'm driving across the desert and I see the sunset in the distance, it really makes me marvel at how beautiful the game is despite being a few years old now, and I feel that way too when I'm cruising along a Los Santos highway on a cloudy day and the rain starts pouring in and you can see the droplets bouncing off the asphalt. It's not the absolute best-looking open-world game on PC (The Witcher 3 and its recent expansion are in the running for that award), but it takes its almost-but-not-quite-realistic style and runs with it, and that approach clearly pays off. I wish I had taken better screenshots during my playthrough so I could properly show you what I mean.

There's so much more to say about this game, but I'll save it. What do you folks think of the game? Did it impress you as much as it impressed me way back in September 2013? I would love to hear people's opinions on this title, positive and negative.

When I first picked it up on PS3 in 2013 I mostly just fucked around in the online mode with friends (this was the same story for when I got in on XB1). It wasn't until the PS4 release that I actually played through the entire story and it was fun as hell and fantastic.

Its an easy 10/10 game, and a technical marvel.

I agree, OP. It's the best GTA, best open world game and one of the best games of all time.

I think I'm like 50 hours in and feel like I've still just barely scratched the surface. I really enjoy just driving around.

I whipped through it back on release as I was selling my Playstation 3 in order to fund the launch PS4 at the time.

Picked it up for PS4 a couple weeks ago and am enjoying the pace I'm working through it at much more this time around. Rich atmospheres, incredible voice work and frankly a pretty compelling story.

I'm not much for GTA Online, and it absolutely kills me that we haven't gotten any single player DLC for this game. Just kills me.

It's probably tied with San Andreas for my favorite and I think the only thing that gives San Andreas an edge is that it's a period piece.

I'll be disappointed if the next GTA isn't set in a certain decade. San Andreas was a rip-off of several movies like Boyz N The Hood, but that's why it worked. It felt focused in a way that 5's story struggled with at times. The Franklin character, for example, was the character I felt lacked any kind of real arc after the first heist other than 'wants money'. The stuff with his ex didn't get enough time and most of the little bits you learn about his character, you have to pick up from fake facebook.

The greatest game of 2013 without question. Probably most of 2015 with the PC version blowing my mind. It's the best game Rockstar has ever created not named Red Dead Redemption.

I do feel that the game does somewhat revolve around Michael. You learn all about his family, there are numerous missions dealing with them, and he is the one that brings Franklin and Trevor into the heist game again. It's interesting to consider what the game would have been like had the focus been more on Franklin, or Trevor. Franklin is probably my favorite of the three but actually seeing Trevor's past through flashback missions or something instead of just having him drop a few lines about how he was abused as a child could have been really eye-opening.

Op, bruh, I agree with you.

Ranks among some of the best games I've played. One of my favourite pastimes that I have is taking out one of the many rides I comprehensively customised and taking a long drive all around the spectacular, gorgeous, phenomenal game world R* created. All whilst listening to my favourite spotify playlists.

Damn good times.

Do yourself a favour and download a garage mod, so you can spend hours like I did building a dream car collection living the rich american dream, without needing to actually do any work ;)

The scale and detail of the world is second to none. Nobody is in the same league as Rockstar. Same galaxy even.

I would try and place the game in thr series but to be honest I dont think I could rank them.

3, VC, 4 and 5 are all some of the best games ever made.

Is this game 60fps on ps4? And has anyone on here successfully played through the game in first person?

It's 30, though much less frequent and drastic drops from that target than on PS3/360.

I played through 99% of the PS4 version in first-person (after playing it first on 360) and it was fucking amazing.

Great game overall, but the dearth of enterable interiors makes the world feel very surface-level, more like a theme park than an actual world. When I see an interesting public building like a restaurant, convenience store, or bar, I should be able to enter it. Otherwise it's just window-dressing.

The story is also a whole lot of nothing. There's no build, no climax. The satire is rarely clever or accurate, mostly just feeding into a cynical worldview that doesn't line up with reality.

It's also disappointing that the missions don't give you much freedom, often insta-failing you if you deviate even a little bit from what the game wants you to do.

Already played through the campaign twice, but this makes me want to give it a third go.

I just found it extra difficult to do those action driving segments without any situational awareness or peripherals.

I had to go back and forth for quite a while to come up with which game I actually like better. GTA V and RDR both slot into my top 10 games of all time, but I justify it like this: GTA V PC/PS4/XB1 > RDR > GTA V PS3/360

The 1% accounts for those situations where the game just obviously wasn't designed around being played in first-person. Those moments are gonna come up, but I was surprised at how playable and enjoyable the game was with its new shoehorned perspective. It could have easily been a fucking mess, but it's not. It enhances the experience and makes the frankly absurd attention to detail that was already there come alive that much more.

I liked the addition of first-person, but I still found myself playing in third-person most of the time. I usually used first-person when I was just driving around the world, since I love cockpit view in racing games.

The one where
you have to torture the dude as Trevor.

But Trevor doesn't enjoy it. The whole time he explains how pointless it is, and in the end it is. But both Trevor and you as the player are forced to. I thought it was well done, not a "beat the shit out of this dude with a wrench for extra points!" mission.

Trevor was terrible. I understand how he embodies all of the media coverage of the previous games (some true, most false) but it doesn't excuse the fact that I can't stand to play as him. The other characters are all so great too, I absolutely loved the game until Trevor came along. It went from being the best GTA I have ever played to being unplayable.

I would rather play GTA 4 again. Honestly.

Recently went back to GTA Online after getting super pissed with The Division changes and while the community is somewhat trash playing with a large group of friends is still super fun.

I did on XB1 and loved every bit of it. Still play in first person online.

How dare you? Red Dead is a masterpiece.

I've already spent £20+ in the steam sale but GTAV has been at the front of my radar for 3 fucking years. It brings tears how well it's held its value and even now in a fucking sale will cost me £24. But it's my birthday soon, and financially the outlay would only really retard some vague savings goals, so ... yeah imma prolly cave.

Quick question: how well will the PC version scale back to less than optimum hardware? I'm on a Lenovo Y580 laptop, with GTX660M. It ran GTA4 very nicely after a fair amount of fiddling with settings. I do love graphics and grit my teeth when making compromises (ultimately framerate always > all though). Will the experience make me sad, or quite happy, would you say?

He is my least favorite character for sure. Franklin > Michael > Trevor, if you ask me.

The part of the game where you first meet Trevor and are forced to play as him for like 2 hours straight is definitely one of the (few) low points in the story.

The crazy shit Trevor does is supposed to disgust you, not make you laugh. Or so I thought.

I dunno man I played the game to have fun, don't put too much thinking into them, but if we talk about games that disgust there is always manhunt 1/2 and I'll agree with anyone saying that its too much .

For me it's both. Sometimes disjoint, sometimes not.

4, or more specifically, The Lost and Damned is my favorite GTA. I like 5 a lot, for many of the reasons you stated. But personally, the robustness of Online kills SP and vice versa. It just frustrates me how many subtle features are segregated in both modes. I'd much rather have one cohesive game, or two modes where one has most of the depth.

I still keep coming back to this game, both offline and online. I wish Rockstar would focus more on online heists. They scratched the surface with story-based co-op missions and there aren't nearly enough of them. The latest update was such a huge disappointment though.

GTA 5 is easier to run than GTA 4. You'll be fine, you'll just have to do some tweaking in the robust and fully-featured graphics settings menu to get the right balance of framerate and eyecandy.

You really should get the game now while it's on sale, you won't regret it. The story mode is like 30 hours on its own, and then you can put as much time as you want into goofing off and doing missions in GTA Online. It has held its value for a reason.

I finished it when it's released on PC in two weeks and never came back to it. It's either a shallow game or I am just over GTA's humor.

Online is only fun with a (large) group of friends, which sadly never happens for me. I get 2 at most, so Im not enjoying Online at all.

I actually didn't like the story at all. You're just being used over and over again until you can decide to do something about it.

The voice acting made it very easy and fun to play through it and like it.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the dialogue, but the story itself is not very special to me.

All sounds like ranting, but I really do like the game. Gameplay is great, looks amazing and you can do so damn much. Insanely well developed game in every aspect.

It's the perfect example of what a talented development studio can do given a ton of time and a ton of money. It's as big budget as big budget gets, and the results speak for themselves.

I want to replay it so badly but it is still $35 on PC ffs. I already bought it on 360 and xbone so I don't wanna pay that much for something I already have twice. the game on xbone was a dream, i can only imagine how good it would be at 1080p/60fps and better textures on my gtx 970

Trevor was my favourite character.
There are different qualities I enjoy in all three, but Trevor is a stroke of genius in that he's an excellent archetype to build on for chaotic open world games. Now, I don't want games to start liberally ripping him off but the more games that move to unify story and gameplay the better.

The Animus, de-synchonization, or "ASSASSINS DID NOT KILL CIVILIANS (Fuck you, I just did, videogame)" is cute and better than the game simply stealing your ability to attack but Trevor is proof there are better solutions.

Too bad online is shit and Rockstar is focusing all efforts on selling more shark cards with shitty "online dlcs" instead of SP DLC.

GTA V is the only GTA game to really resonate with me at all, and I really enjoy its singleplayer a ton. I had a lot of fun last year after the PC release going through some heists with friends and think that particular aspect of multi is fantastic, but outside of those I find the online to be rather dull.

I still love booting the game up and wandering around the singleplayer. Love the dynamic things that can occur, and I hate (but understand due to network syncing issues) that the wildlife is gone in multi. The immersion factor is crazy good in singleplayer. I almost wish I could just wander around the singleplayer world with my Online character.
