System Shock Remastered Kickstarter Launched (PC/XB1) | 900K Goal - Demo Available

Did I say that lol

As a consumer, I will not buy this product until it comes to a platform that I will play it on. Based on his thread that is a very familiar sentiment. I'm not a console war snob; I don't give a shit if they "owe anything" to Sony. I just want to play this game that I've been following for a very long time.

As the the actually good retorts that other users have been putting forward, I guess I get it. Just a bummer that not only will I have to wait for this Kick-started game to finish, I'll have to wait for it to be ported as well.

The game originated on PC; it would've been wise of you to assume it wasn't coming to ANY consoles.

Microsoft decided to assist and Sony didn't. Don't buy it or back it.

Why should they? They don't owe this company anything. If these guys want their game to be on every platform that matters, they should put it on PS4. It's not like they're skipping the Wii U here.

For a game like this? A remaster of a PC classic? I'm betting the audience is like 90% on PC.

I don't think they're missing out on much. I'd rather they focus on getitng the PC version perfec,t then focus on the Xbone version, and then, if it makes sense for them, focus on the PS4 version.

This is a small team, don't want them being spread too thin, and PC shoudl absolutley be the priority here.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I suspect that if the game was coming to PC and PS4, there would be fewer complaints. Xbone owners are kinda used to getting shortchanged at this point, particularly when it comes to games from smaller studios.

The campaign will likely reach 50% funding in the first 24 hours, the Linux port is in the first stretch tier.

It will be very likely we are going to be playing on Linux.

Yeah, that's what I figured as well :D I don't think I've ever backed a successful Kickstarter that didn't reach/exceed the stretch goals, let alone one that's just 200K over the initial goal.

Anyway, glad this is happening. Looking forward to getting the updates from the team.

Demo is quite promising, I love their attention to details e.g. When you hit lamps they break and stop working!

For a pre-alpha build it looks wonderful too. Sure, there are weird pixels here and there but it will only get better. I'm not backing it yet, but will probably do in last couple of days of the campaign.

Hmm, actually this got me thinking: Does the Demo already have gamepad controls? Didn't try it out before.

Just checked and it does actually, through doesn't seem to work with a couple things (going through options and moving items into the inventory).

I still find it hard to believe that the publishers that might have some IP rights of NOLF even refuse to look it up. I think it was Activision and some other company?

It's less that Acti and Fox couldn't be bothered to look but more they didn't know where to start as NOLF predated their use of digital storage. The trademark and copyright documents are stashed away in long-forgotten boxes in long-forgotten places. What threw a spanner into the works, though, was WB realising that it has a loose claim to the later two NOLF games (A Spy in HARM's Way and spin-off Contract JACK) in the form of the trademarks for those subtitles going with Monolith to WB as part of the acquisition. That's what lead WB to part ways with Night Dive and issue a threat of legal action should ND continue to pursue the re-releases, which you can read about on Kotaku.

My research into the matter leads me to believe that the IP is indeed split three ways: Fox owns the games themselves (as per Copyright.gov); Activision, by way of the merger with Vivendi Games back in 2007, owns the NOLF trademark (as per this assignment document detailing the transfer of ownership from Fox); and, as mentioned above, WB owns the trademarks to the subtitles of the later two entries in the series (as per this assignment document detailing the transfer of ownership from Monolith). It's possible that Fox sold the games themselves in addition to the trademark, but there's no record of this on Copyright.gov, plus the sale occurred in 2007, so if Fox did sell the games, it'd surely have its own physical and digital records -- and surely someone involved with the communication link to Night Dive would have been aware of the games being let go.

Beat the demo. Was pretty fun and it does feel like System Shock. It's rough looking but it's an alpha so no worries. Not a fan of Unity. Even if the overlay says 60 FPS you can experience microstuttering which makes the whole thing janky and unsmooth.

What a mess. Shame none of them want to work things out. :( I could imagine NIghtdive handling re-release NOLF in amazing way with possibility of remastering/reboot on PC/consoles while getting NOLF 3 in development.

Fox seems happy to part with old things as Rebellion owns the original Aliens vs Predator as of September 2014, which is why the game made a belated appearance on GOG a month later and GOG/Steam cross-service multiplayer was patched in roughly four months after that. But having one piece of a three-piece puzzle is rather pointless.

Damn these dudes are going to get SO much money from this thing. Good for them, it looks awesome and I'm confident that they are capable. The demo was nicely done.

Pretty fun bug that lets me throw out as many dismembered arms as I like.

Looks like I'm stuck after the room that opens with the L.1 card and goes nowhere, though.

put down money for the $75 tier. Even though I was always too scared to play System Shock 2, I always wanted to support it because the ideas and gameplay it presented always seemed so cool to me. This doesnt seem like it will be as scary as SS2, so hopefully I can get through this.

I thought the demo had a lot of potential! I loved it. Few thoughts:

* Are they going to implement cyberspace? It seems like it but didn't hear a clear answer. Can't wait to see/hear how that would work.

* I hope they completely change Rebecca's VO, script and portrait. Those were awful. I don't like how right when you pick up the module Rebecca tries to connect and reaches you at that moment. In the original I believe it was a message for you to receive when you wake up. The remake also misses the following key info:

And by the way, we know all about you and your friend Diego. Pull this off, and we'll clear your record. That implant you're wearing is military-grade hardware; use it well. Lansing out.

* I agree to the poster that said the OG soundtrack remix should be a lower level stretch goal. I'm hoping for more synth in my steampunk.

* I would like beta access but I don't want any physical goods. Please give us a digital only package.

* Here's a biggie: I don't want arbitrary RPG systems like SS2! I don't want to put fake "module" points on strength or hacking. The best thing about the original system shock is upgrades were integrated into the universe: they were software / hardware upgrades v1/v2/etc. You want to jump higher find the better jump boots, you want to see better find the upgraded viewfinder with rear view support, etc. Those were 100x more awesome than adding more points to pistol weapons because someone gave you some arbitrary module points for some reason.

I was not implying console gamers can't know that the game is great (or played it, I assumo many console gamers also play or have played on PC at some point in their life.) The series has also gained a lot of prestige with the success of Bioshock.
That said, the outrage in the first page had me quite baffled. Being outraged about it not appearing on the PS4 seemed confusing to me. It's not that I don't understand wanting the game on your available or preferred hardware, but the outrage was as if the PS4 version was not just expected, but obvious to them. I was pleasantly surprised the game is headed to consoles at all considering the original's UI and gameplay.

Well, its obvious to me too. I Just understand the reasoning behind them Going PC and Xbo first (its more cost effective, and the game being on Unity makes waiting for the new and better performing version of the engine worth it, seeing How ps4 seems not very suited to it atm). That, plus I dont care about waiting for it to come over, since I think Its a given.

So Im left being happy for the project to exist, and super happy to be able to ignore discussion about the game being dumbed down for teh consoles. Not backing it though.

Who says they didn't contact sony? It's entirely possible that they did and sony never responded with the dev kit.

Just one last thing: I dont know How someone could believe that. Sony has been SUPER proactive to indie devs since the start of the gen.
People derided the console as a indie only platform at one Point, ffs.

I love how everyone complains about PC always begging for ports and we have a thread full of people whining about lack of PS4 support. Amazing double standards here.

OT: 100% in for $150 tier. Hope they bring back cyberspace but I'm a bit wary of the orchestral soundtrack. This game needs just the remixed original. Give me those beep boops.

Am I reading you right? Are you saying that you believe Sony did get back to Night Dive and they're lying to us?

Nope: think they (edit: devs) didn't ask since it made no sense to them and Sony didn't approach them period.

Edit: I can see why you misinterpreted. Accent was on them not asking. I think if they DID, Gio Corsi or the tpr office would have responded and they would have mwntioned that. No conspiracy theory here.

You see it all the time. Almost every PC exclusive trhead is littered with PS4 gamers port begging.

Meantime there was that other thread a few weeks ago about should Sony do the same thing Microsoft is doing - bringing games to PC.

The entire thread was derailed by just about every PS4 Gaffer complaining about what they saw as a port begging thread.

When you put it that way Jazar I agree, but I imagine the points system makes it easier to level than finding specific items. A smoother experience but less rewarding than the sense of discovery.

Looks nice but I'll wait until the Xbox Summer sale (it seems it's going to be good) before putting money into this.
Damn, people don't complaint that much when kickstarter campaigns don't include XO.

Played the demo, first time I've ever played SS. It was ok, the circuit "puzzle" made no sense to me and it took me a while before I figured out I was supposed to click the lights. I thought I needed to put a battery in some where, lol.

This was a rather short "demo", I would have loved to see Night Dive's vision for the Cyber Space sections.
Now to choose between the 30$ or the 75$ tier..

Half a mil in 24 hours, wow that's amazing. What's the fast pledges project in 24 hours?

Also, at this rate, how many days until the 900,000 goal is reached; two days?

depends on how steady the rate becomes. a lot of kickstarters get most of their support in the first couple days and the last couple days

For games Shenmue 3 with its E3 conference push was the fastest, but I don't remember the numbers.

Yooka-Laylee got 1 million in 6 hours and was #1 before Shenmue.

The vast majority will come in the first 48 hours and then it will trickle until a reasonable resurgence at the end.

I don't think it's going to hit the goal until maybe 3/4 of the way through the campaign.
