Tales of Berseria 5th trailer

To be honest, I expect Vesperia to get a PS4 remaster for its 10th anniversary (so, announced next year and released in 2018). They said they were interested in remastering more games from the franchise and people seem to really request this one.

I think when it's all said and done, PS4 could hold a decent library of Tales games: Zestiria, Berseria, the next two or so mainline titles and a possible remaster for Vesperia.

What he said was that the PS3 was the most popular console around the world when development on Berseria started, but the PS4 has quickly taken over particularly in the west. So this will probably be the last one for the PS3.

Didn't he just say in Japan? It was probably PS4 in other major markets by that point, and 360 had been numero uno in NA the prior gen, not PS3.

I feel Tales series needs new art director. Personally I'm utterly bored with how the games looked since Graces. How about going back to cel-shaded graphics like that of Vesperia?

Vesperia art director is the art director of Zestiria (and likely Berseria) though.

True, but they made a Symphonia rerelease to honor the anniversary of the game (and to release something during the dry period between Xillia 2 and Zestiria), so it's not too farfetched that they would do the same for Vesperia (since we're probably going to be in another dry period of no Tales games after Berseria releases). At least this belief has a better foundation than the people who though Vesperia PS3 was still coming for about 5 years after it didn't come out in the west.

Even if it does happen, Troy Baker won't be returning as Yuri most likely, which makes me very sad.

Really good trailer. Story's giving me Abyss vibes for some reason (which is my favorite Tales story), can't wait.

The renderer here seems so anachronistic, I'd love to spend some time with the folks working on this and understand their core tech and how they got there. It reminds me of the lighting approach we took in the PS2 era, where everything was just sort of kludged together in terms of how the scene's lighting was integrated (rim lighting! hero lighting! hero-only shadow! one scripted primary!).

Looks much better than Xillia and Zestiria. As I got the Japanese PS3 version for free I might as well try it out before the western release.

Man, people is way too obsessed with Vesperia.

Let. It. Go.

To a lot of people, it was the last "good" Tales game and that's just from playing what people consider the "beta". I don't agree, but I can see where the obsessiveness for Vesperia comes from.

Haven't been following this game but is this a psvita port or ps3 port for current gen?

No, it's a brand new game. It is crossgen so it also has a PS3 release. Not sure which one got the most focus though, but all of the trailer footage is from the PS4 version.

This doesn't look that great to me. It seems like they aren't out of the visual-style, enemy-style rut that they got themselves in with Xillia. The voice acting also did not impress me, and the Zestiria voice cast was one of my favorite parts of that game. And no Go Shiina should've come back to do even more on this game than with Zestiria.

After the last few Tales games, I can't really get too excited over Berseria. I mean, I'll get it and play it and probably like it. But I want to love a Tales game again, like with Eternia, Symphonia and Destiny DC.

Matthew Mercer works just as well honestly.

OT this looks like it might be the first truly great Tales game in a long time. Everything is coming together so well. Just wish we could get another Go Shiina combo OST. After SO5 I have hella faith is Sakuraba but I want that Shiina flair.

Finally went out and purchased zesteria ($30 at GameStop, fuck that $60 psn price tag) so I'll be ready when this comes out.

To be honest, I don't even know what to expect from Tales anymore. Gradually went down hill since Vesperia IMO.

The dungeons and fields are just so bland and lazily designed. I miss their meticulously crafted dungeons from the Tales games up to Vesperia. They were so much better. The Xillias were just embarrassing in that regard.

"Hey, let's add holes to crawl through, so it adds gameplay depth!" It's like, really?

I'll stay optimistic, but that's just doing so blindly. They've given me no reason to really feel that way.

I really liked Vesperia, and Graces f. The updated version of Graces far exceeds its predecessor.

Their back end systems and combat were clearly the best in the series, and no game has gone back. Instead, why don't you collect a bunch of ....things.

In the rush to change things for the sake of changing things, they missed it.

Zestiria was a piss pooor showing in everything but character writing. Xillia 2 and Xillia felt cheap comparatively, with mostly flat characters and few, in any, crescendos.

They are merely decent. Shadows of former glory.

Like the second games in a trilogy, cash grabs with too much wasted effort or not enough effort.

I hope Berseria is better. It looks as such.

I liked Xillia, so I will probably enjoy this. Not gonna get it this year though. My plate is full this summer.

Zestiria should have been an anime only to begin with.
As someone who puts Zestiria on the lower end of Tales games in terms of quality... I enjoyed the game for what it was.

Artorias sounds really familiar. Should I know who that is from Zestiria? Am I having a massive mind lapse?

Artorius Throne I think.

With both Zestiria and Xillia, I could "sense" the ambition going into those titles as anniversary mainline games, but in execution they always feel short, either in needing more time or more money to achieve what they wanted.

Chances are there'll be another Tales game in-between Berseria and whatever their next anniversary Tales is, but the 2020 Tales game needs to really be a significant leap forward in terms of how a Tales game should be.

This reminds me I never really got around to beating Zestiria. I actually only played till I got outside the starting area. Just looking over the way that systems with equipment worked sort of killed it for me since I could just see it becoming overly tedious.

I suppose I should perhaps try again given the ties to Berseria. Perhaps just setting on easy and going through it.

Oh, I didn't catch that, that's hilarious.

I don't know, for an ambitious cross-gen game on a limited budget I think it looks pretty good. Vesperia had simplistic graphics (I mean it was 2008) that show and the game used fixed camera angles to hide its rough edges and such. I also suspect Microsoft must have helped the budget to an extent. Not sure who would help with an overhaul here.

THAT WAS IT. I missed the fixed camera angles in the entries prior to Xillia. They gave a feel that every area in the games are manually crafted and designed, so exploration felt rewarding and fun. Xillia gaves free camera movement and suddenly places felt much more repetitive and generic.

It looks like the books of Velvets younger brother have the crest of Innominat on their covers.

I hope we learn more about Innominat in Berseria because he was only briefly mentioned once in a skit towards the end of Zestiria in Artorius' Throne (which was a shrine to Innominat).

From a GameFAQs post:

Romanization -> True Name "Old" = True Name "English" (Real meaning according to perfect guide)

Wikueku Wiku -> Wiku Ek Wiku = Rose Is Rose
Maokusu Amekka -> Maoxh Amekha = Laugh Alisha (Smiling Alisha)
Foesu Meima -> Fowe?? Maemah = Puri?? Lailah (Become pure Lailah)
Ruzuroshivu Rerei -> ???? Relwei = ???? Micrio (Enforcer Mikleo)
Hakudimu Yuuba -> ???? Uyba = ???? Edna (Early Bloom Edna)
Ruwiiyu Yukumu -> ???? Yukum = ???? Desel (Eyes Without Impurity Dezel)
Firuku Zadeya -> Fwireku Zadeya = Promise Zabida (Promise Zaveid)

Original -> Ancient
A -> A | G -> X | M -> R | S -> K | Y-> ?
B -> D | H -> H | N -> B | T -> ? | Z-> Z
C -> L | I -> E | O -> I | U -> O
D -> Y | J -> ? | P -> F | V -> ?
E -> U | K -> ? | Q -> ? | W -> ?
F -> ? | L -> M | R -> W | X -> ?

Also, it's kind of a stretch but the kid from Berseria might be Maotelus if we assume that his name is supposed to be "Laeficet":

Laeficet -> Mau?elu?

If we assume F->T and T->S:
Laeficet -> Mautelus

From reddit:

Who the fuck is Innominat? We get one mysterious skit about him, and then nothing-- except for some comments about his crest looking a lot like Maotelus's crest.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Laphicet might be Maotelus. And if Velvet's younger brother becomes Laphicet, Velvet is possibly Maotelus' sister.

This was a good trailer.
I wanted to try a Tales for so long, and all the previous ones (Xillia, Zestiria and now Berseria) all look promising in the beginning, but by the time of release they loose most of the appeal to me.
Plus the artstyle it's always a mixed bag and an incredibly outdated engine doesn't help. Chances they actually go for a competent engine (hoping for UE4) for the first PS4 only Tales?

Also they always come out in periods where much more important games releases :(

Who knows, maybe Berseria will be the first i'll actually go with, Velvet looks cool and the OP track is good.

I still want to play Vesperia tho, that's the only one that looks really good

Wait there's an anime connecting the two games? Is this something I'll be super confused about if I haven't played Zestiria?

From the first episode, it seems like it'll be a heavily-expanded adaptation of Zestiria, so being confused seems unlikely. The first episode seemed very much like a well-done fantasy anime, rather than a game adaptation (like some of the Persona 4 animation episodes, for example).

EDIT; For context, I haven't played Zestiria either, but it felt like a good, logical set-up of mysterious events/threat to world that required no direct knowledge of the game itself.

Awesome. Felt a little burned out from Tales after going through Abyss, Symphonia, Graces F, Vesperia, and Xillia 1 in the span of about 2 years, but I'll be ready to dive back in with Berseria. If watching the Zestiria anime will help me pick up references in stuff while being a solid show on it's own then I'm definitely down for a watch.

I don't know why, but as much as I love the Tales series, I have zero interest in any of their trailers. I guess I just think that I'm gonna love the game and enjoy the story and characters by default.

Glad to see Velvet had much, much better clothes at the start of her story, though, I guess. If I recall correctly, past Tales games did not have in-game alternate skins. Ugh. Might have to fork out more cash just to change her outfit then.

If anything like Xillia and Zestiria there should be unlcokable outfits and I expect her first outfit to be an alternative skin.

They REALLY should get rid of that horrible Xillia engine and go back to Vesperia's. Characters are ugly as hell.
