Character models that bug you

Brawl Ike > Tr4sh Ike. It doesn't suit the character

How does it not suit the character? Sm4sh Ike is just the Radiant Dawn version: bulked-up and older.
The guy is a monster, even more like Guts than before!

All the faces in Dragons Dogma have this weird big-lipped thing going on, it bugs the crap outta me.

Also, Zero Time Dilemma's character models are pretty bad. Every time someone rotates their hand, their wrist scrunches up like crazy.

Sully in UC4 bothers me while the other characters don't, but hopefully will grow on me

A good example of how it doesn't matter how many polygons you shove into a model, if the art direction is poor then your models will age horribly. A game from 13 years ago still has an incredible art direction.

I think SH3 might straight up have better character textures tbh. They look super crisp on PC for a game its age

Characters from the recent Tales.

I know it's hard to convey without an image, but the way the mo-cap works and the fact that the Tales characters are inherently sort of stylized create this sort of uncanny dissonance between the more subtle movements of humanness in the way they hold their stance and position, but none of that is present in their face or clothes.

Some parts feel too rigid when the rest flows, and some parts feel too "real" for something that is on the stylization curve near a Mario character. Try comparing model movements in Zestiria to those of Vesperia.

A lot of Japanese games seem to have the problem of combining anime character designs with realistic lighting, or realistic animations, or realistic proportions. The effect just creates an extreme uncanny valley.

I think some recent fighting games like Xrd or CyberConnect 2 games might be the only ones to really properly do the anime aesthetic in 3D. It's because they decided to ape anime shows in pretty much every aspect: the character designs, the lighting, the way characters move, and in some cases even the number of animation frames they have. Camera angles might count for a lot too, since in 3D you see the characters from angles that were never drawn on TV. How would you render Ran Mouri's hair in 3D?

True, Team Silent used some wizardry to make those textures look great on the PS2. Silent Hill 1-3's, and to an extent SH4's art direction can't be ignored though, even in SH1's polygon mess. SH4's models are pretty great, but just a tad less detailed.

Glad somebody else noticed this. I can overlook the facial differences that come with increased power/improved tech, but he looked like a completely different person.

You mean to tell me that if I showed you a bunch of pictures and that was one of them, you wouldn't have immediately said, "hey that's Sully!"

Star Ocean 5's Mrs Potato Head certainly takes the cake. Not only ugly, but she doesn't match up with the characteristics of the other characters at all.

I don't mind Uncharted 4's designs because you tend to get drastic changes in appearances when characters move up to a new console generation.

As if anyone isn't terrible looking in this game, Sonic is infamously troubling to look at in Sonic 06. Extremely lanky limbs, spikes almost longer than his body (and moves/clips around his body like real hair), washed out colors, that huge forehead, the almost constant scowl, that flap-mouth on the front of his face.. it's all pretty disgusting.

It's only further intensified by how instead of putting his arms behind him while running, he runs with them straight at his sides like he's pretending to be an airplane.

Oh, and since I might as well throw them in, here's the path down uncanny valley that is 06's human NPCs..

wake me up, wake me up inside (can't wake up)

Ok real talk people. What do the words "character model" refer to? I'm seeing people post sprites and now straight up 2D art pieces. A lot of the complaints in here also have nothing to do with the quality of 3d modeling present and everything to do with the character design.

Needs to be quoted again. A lot of you are just talking about character design.

Street fighter IV and V. Also female characters in netherrealm games.
Also those doll like female characters in Japanese games, specially mmos

Couldn't you have spoiler tagged that? I only just finished the first game the other day :/

Too bad for you. They've already shown everyone appearing in the game. This is in no way a spoiler. Guess what? Junpei is in it, too.

Well, it's one thing to defend yourself since the knowledge was supposedly already out there. Going out of your way to personally tell me something I clearly didn't want to know is just malicious, man.

Come on.

Tsubasa in Tokyo Mirage Sessions looks fine a lot of the time. But depending on her stance or when the camera focuses on her side/is spinning around her I absolutely can't stop and look at her breasts. I can't put my finger on why, but they look really off, especially whenever she awakens a new power.

If you took out the shiny orb in the 'just unlocked a new power' scenes she would just be staring straight at her own boobs in astonishment. She's like three cup sizes bigger than every other woman in the game, except maybe Maiko :p

Eggman's model is the worst in that game. It's so terrible.

Any tales from Xilla all the to tales of Bearsia or whatever it's called, after Xilla don't know why tales team decide to adopt the full uglyness of it's art style instead of the good looking Vespira.

This impostor they got to play Sully in Uncharted 4:

WMsElli.jpg

I mean, you aren't going to confuse him when you hear Richard McGonagle's voice coming out of his mouth, but in terms of facial features that's a completely different person.

Sully most of got a hair transplant, his got more hair on the sides of his hair.

As mentioned earlier, KH3's/next gen KH from what we've seen so far. Aqua's is pretty good but otherwise they've been very bad. Terra and Sora (in most angles besides where he's walking out towards Rapunzel's tower) are the worst so far. I really hope the Osaka team have seen the large amount of criticism of what we've seen so far and they make changes before it's too late. KH3 is still a while away (I'm guessing it comes out in September 2017 or later) so they still have a while to fix it thankfully.

Main character of Ni No kuni 2. Suppose to be a young boy but looks like a little girl to me. For the record I don't care what sex the main character is, I just wish the character model reflected it better.

Maybe they present feminine, who cares

I do wonder if they will actually see this. Japanese press interviews have been very positive on the visuals, so I wonder if they actually realize the amount of hate towards the current character models.
I do think it is mainly a problem with lighting (except some characters) and Nomura did mention that they will be adjusting it until the release. So hopefully it looks better when it comes out.

Not a very good photo, but that's the best I can do browsing the YouTube videos:

The original Lara Croft CGI model, whenever she was standing next to other characters. Other characters (at last in TR4 and 5) were modeled realistically, with proper facial structure, skin shaders, proper body proportions. Next to them was Lara Croft, stuck with her 1996 CGI model, with bug eyes, Micheal Jackson-like nose, huge lips, and body proportions of a sex doll. She looked like an alien.

Yasue is fluent in English and seems to be interested in the non-JP fan community so I think he might have at least heard/seen some criticism while he was at E3. But maybe not and even if he did take note of it I don't know if he would actually get it changed at all. The lighting definitely affects it. It might be too late for 0.2 but I wouldn't be surprised if the next time we see KH3 Sora's model is a bit different (hopefully it is).
