Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana import impressions thread

I've played about two hours and I am so impressed with this game. The graphics are outstanding, and native res on Vita, which is a huge improvement from Celceta. The attention to detail is apparent everywhere I go - e.g. I found myself staring at the beautiful starry night sky in the prologue, and I smiled when I noticed a few stars flickering here and there. I love the rich exposition and voice acting, and all the characters so far have been great. Wonderful action-RPGing as well, of course. Loads haven't been too bad for me, maybe because I have the download version? Not sure if there is a difference there.

Anyway, I plan to play a few more hours today. It's hard to put down!

Good impressions! Music is amazing... Guess l'll get the ost when it hits itunes. Dont think I can wait for the US PS4 release and then hoping for a full soundtrack to be included too.

Managed to put in a few hours today and I'm having a blast with it. I know that building the village/base defense aspect was met with some mixed reactions, but honestly I like it so far. I think it makes the side quests have more purpose like seeing various parts of the village getting built as a result of doing them instead of just getting items for quests which you still do too.

As for the base defense, I just reached the part where I have to defend the village for the first time so I'll see how that turns out.

Play stats for today - 10 hours in, 29% of the map unlocked, characters on level 27, all side quests so far done. While the map % looks like I'm 1/3 through the game, I still have only 2 field items (I assume I'll get the 3rd one in the dungeon I'm in now) and the "2 main characters" thing hasn't unlocked yet.
I didn't read previews, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to work, so I'm a bit worried it will be a worse for the pacing than conversations which already happen a bit too often.
Also I'm still in chapter 2 - I wonder how the game is split between parts % wise.

Just picked up my copy. :)

Played Celceta when it went free on PS Plus back in May. It was my first Ys game and I really enjoyed it overall. I'll post impressions once I sink some time into it later!

Game is pretty great highly enjoying my time with it. As usual combat is fantastic and as others have said music most def is good.

So I'm a chump and bought DLC costumes for Adol and Raksha. However, after downloading them I went under the DLC tab in the item menu, as well as checked in their equipment menu, and the DLC isn't there. Anybody know why? I have played for 2 hours or so, and got past the part where Adol gets to switch out of his default sailor uniform.

I believe the "DLC" only has present packs and usable items.
For costumes, go to equipment and keep pressing down. Costume slots are on a second screen, under accessories.

Got to the 4th chapter earlier today. All my characters are about ~35 and I'm really enjoying the game when I can go through without story sequences for longer periods of time. The story is by no means bad (some parts were quite engaging), but I wish you didn't have to go back to the home base so often.

Speaking of the base, if anyone missed it - you can retry base defense missions, which give nice experience, a lot of materials, and most importantly some very good items. Since getting S is really easy (at least on Normal), I wholeheartedly recommend not giving up until you get it.

Thanks for the tip on the defense missions. Finally got back to the game today and started doing those missions now. I'll make sure not to miss the s ranks.

Yep, I have checked the costume slots and neither character has their alternative costumes that I downloaded. When I booted up the game it said it completed installing the costumes, but they still aren't there. Waste of a couple hundred yen, I guess. :(

Speaking of those missions - raising villager's affinity through quests and presents will make their skills during defense more effective. Very useful since they're surprisingly strong.

That's odd. There are 2 free DLC packs on the store and one additional one from the first print version (all PSN versions have it until a certain point iirc). Those show in the DLC menu - are you having a problem with those as well?
If that's the case, maybe costume DLC unlocks those at the tailor, once you unlock her in the story.

Yep, the free DLC packs don't work either. No clue why my game is bugging out. Oh well, I'm enjoying a lot anyway!

That's really weird. You updated your game with the day 1 patch/tried resetting it, right?
Turns out I'm a dummy and haven't installed 1.01! Sorry for wasting your time! It says right in the patch notes that 1.01 is compatible with the DLC...

Enough Ys 8 for today! 20 hours in, 50% of the map cleared and still on chapter 4.

It's kind of weird that while everything is pointing to this being a halfway point of the game - the map/location point/treasure % (I'm very diligent and 100% all locations/do all quests etc. before I progress), the second row of Adventurer's Tools is almost full. The first one seems to be traversal items found in dungeons, but the second so far is just items making your life easier -
map unlock radius around you is larger
,
MUCH faster dashing + a tackle move
,
increased item pick up radius
.

I guess those are more useful where I'm right now then they would be near the end, but I'm very curious if Ys 8 really is 40 hours long and they were put where I am for the above reason. I'm not going to spoil how you get them, but they are all related to side activities which are heavily locked by progression.

Anyway, I wish there was a way to know where you can find the fish you didn't caught yet (if they appear in one of the already visited/fished in locations). I have 1 or 2 holes in my fishing book, but the one above and the one below are in completely different zones, so it might take some time to figure out what I'm missing. Or I'll just check the wiki.

Just upgraded the village a second time and now i'm fortifying defenses (walls, fences etc...). thanks for the tip about replaying fighting waves, I only got an A on my first time so I'll probably try to get an S now.

I've still only covered about 16% of the map in about 6 hours according to my save file. i really like the scenery in general, its a joy to look at sometimes. Also, I almost died because i wasn't paying attention when that
Level 42 dinosaur popped up !
. definitely having fun with it.

5 hours in, 11.5% map completed, around 14% treasure chests opened. Random thoughts from a guy who played Celceta for the 1st time in May (I also haven't played an other Ys game, so my perspective might be different from longtime fans):

-Combat system is very similar to Celceta. Feels great. One of the main changes from Celceta is the break system in which if you do a certain amount of damage against an enemy (with a character that is strong against that enemy type) you "break" the enemy. This means that the enemy is now vulnerable to all attack types. To be honest, once I break an enemy they are almost dead anyway, so it's not like I switch to finish the enemy with another character or anything. As mentioned earlier in the thread, the bosses do seem to make use of the jump button. I.E. One boss had a weak spot on his head, which of course usually required you to jump to hit it.

-The 1st couple hours (and even 5 hours in) have a ton of tutorials. Makes sense, as there are a ton of new features in this game. Still, it does often feel a little too heavy-handed. Speaking of which, way too many interruptions with dialogue. Honestly, I think it would be better if a bunch of these conversations just happened naturally in battle (and put the text just on the top of the screen or something), as it really does take you out of your groove when another cutscene starts.

-Base building in this game doesn't really offer anything unique, but I still enjoy it anyway. I do miss the cities/villages from Celceta, as they all were very colorful and charming.

-Most of the sidequests so far are still of the simple Celceta formula: find/collect X amount of Y, clear a certain area that contains a bunch of strong enemies, etc. Most of the sidequests are linked to improving your village/its facilities, which is more motivating than Celceta, which was full of sidequests that gave you a bit of gold/items you don't really need that badly.

-The map is divided into big areas. I like how it tells you what % of each area's map is complete, as well as the overall completion %. With Celceta I had to constantly scout the big map to see if I missed a nook or cranny. Easier this way, IMO. There are definitely way more loading screens within a given area. It kind of sucked, but I am used to it by now. Loading times are fairly short though.

-The first 3 hours or so consisted of very simple areas. I was worried about the level design, but I got to a bigger area which utilized multiple levels and the jump mechanic pretty well, as well as had many shortcuts to unlock. I hope there will continue to be some big areas to explore.

-Speaking of the map, there are big obstacles that prevent you from going into certain areas. In order to get past these areas you need to have a certain amount of villagers in your village, who in turn can help you get rid of the obstacles. For example, I just cleared an obstacle that required 8 villagers to remove. Thus, so far the adventure has mainly consisted of me finding villagers, which in turn allows me access new areas of the map/upgrade my village.

-Overall performance seems a bit lower than Celceta, though so far I haven't had as harsh FPS drops that I had with the former. I remember with certain Celceta characters the FPS would sink sub-15 during certain attack animations. I haven't had that problem with Lacrimosa yet, though as I mentioned, the average FPS does seem a bit lower.

-Game looks really good. The areas are varied so far, and still pretty colorful like Celceta.

I kind of rambled on, and a bunch of this stuff has been covered by other posters, but oh well!

Isn't this the same thing as Stun in Seven and Celceta?

It is. I'm not sure if regular enemies had it in previous games.

69% of the map cleared, near the end (?) of chapter 5. Now that my characters have decent equipment etc., I'm liking the game even more. Traversal is way more fun with new adventurer's tools.

They did. Just often times theyd be dead by the time they got stunned like Guru-Guru describes lol.

So glad to hear this. I feel like with the party games, one thing people never really give the games props for is how they consistently manage to make movement so much more fast and fun. I thought the horizontal movement speed increase from the dash mechanic in Seven was a HUGE improvement in mobility over the Napishtim games, and I thought the speed running in Celceta was an improvement on that.

So I'm pleased to hear that DANA continues that trend with even more fun and new movement tools.

I have to say, this is on of the first Ys games that i care about the story to want how its going to unfold.

No, I mean DANA's story and how its going to effect adol's story. I don't care about those shipwrecked people.

Near the end of chapter 5, 28 hours on the in game clock (I think it doesn't count some things, because I'm sure I played longer than that).
Still enjoying the game a great deal and think it's a great action rpg, but brace yourself for a lot of story, by far the most in any Ys game to date. I think I'd enjoy it even more if there less cutscenes.

Also, another PSA - there's a box on the beach in your village which gets filled with adrift items. Remember to check it from time to time, so you don't have to do it all in one go, which requires to go out and back to the beach area (multiple loadings in a row).
24th of August.

How close are defense battles to Ys Origin's Arena Mode?
Didn't try the one in Origins, but you have multiple decoys/barricades/a stun gong etc. and monsters are coming in waves from different points. Your villagers will use their skills, catapults with fire and you have to get rid of enemies asap to get a high rank.

Too dumb in writing or too predictable or what?

It's too much. Too much exposition about obvious things. This game is definitely, more than any other Ys game, a victim of Japanese writing syndrome where everybody repeats everything everybody else says over and over again. Ys is a series that used to understand that less is more, but now they've definitely fallen into the "tell, don't show. actually, go ahead and show, but make sure you tell before and after" trap.

Finding myself enjoying the characters and generally mystery of the island stuff way more here than in the last few Ys games, so the cutscenes aren't really bothering me at all.

Especially because the gameplay is so damn good. Only about six hours in.

Yeah, Ys VII in particular was just strangled from this. Endless refrains of "This is what you need to do!" "... this is what I need to do?" I was a little more forgiving towards it in Celceta because the game was a little shorter and the story slightly more interesting.

:( That sucks. I only played the Napishtim-engine Ys (and I & II), not the VII/Celceta stuff, but that sounds pretty damning...

I'll probably still get it for PS4 if it gets localized, but it's too bad they moved away from what made Oath/Origin/Ark so good.

If this is even wordier than the last two games, you're going to be in for quite the change of pace.

I enjoyed Seven and Celceta, but nowhere near as much as Oath and Origin. It's a shame that seems to be the minority opinion and reflected by sales, so Falcom is probably going to continue in this direction.
