IGN: Top 10 Legend of Zelda games

10. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons

Originally envisioned as a trilogy for the Gameboy Color, Oracle of Seasons and its counterpart, Oracle of Ages, found our hero exploring the lands of Holodrum and Labrynna, respectively. As a spiritual successor to Link's Awakening, each game focused on a different aspect of the Zelda experience: Seasons focused on combat while Ages was more about puzzle solving. Traveling between eras and manipulating the weather leads to some genuinely clever puzzles and the ability to equip rings to improve Link's stats brought back RPG elements that would be seen in later games. The real brilliance behind each of these games is the way they compliment each other. You can play only one, but you'll only get half the story. - Zach Ryan

9. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Equal parts A Link to the Past and Wind Waker, The Minish Cap is the perfect blend of charm and old school exploration. As Capcom’s second original Zelda outing, Minish Cap was applauded for its whimsical tone and impressive sprite-based artwork. It’s original spin on the oft used “dual worlds” idea helped alleviate some problems with the game’s overall length. Furthermore, it’s light hearted tone helped establish this GBA adventure as a memorable one. - Zach Ryan

8. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
7. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is a love letter to the Zeldas of the past while still being a move toward the future; it stands out for being wonderfully nostalgic yet not overly familiar. Its dungeons might reflect old blueprints, like ice, lava, and desert, but its puzzles are inventive and surprising nonetheless. It takes a world full of old memories — the Hyrule of A Link to the Past — and makes it fresh. - Kallie Plagge

6. The Legend of Zelda
5. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
4. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
3. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I kept going down the list expecting Skyward to show up and it didn't. I personally disagree with the list. I think Majora should be higher and Skyward should be on here. But I know us Zelda fans feel very strongly about our opinions. I included some excerpts about games you don't see on these lists as much, if you want to read 'em all the link is:

P.S. I think for these lists it should be required to play through the entire series. But I'm a Zelda snob so I might be being unfair with that idea. :)

Oof, I lot of people are not gonna agree with Wind Waker being above Majora's Mask.

1. Majora's Mask
2. Wind Waker
3. Skyward Sword

That's my personnal top 3. But I guess to each one his top. As long as no CDI games is there :")

I would replace OoT with Link Between Worlds in the top 5. Would then be the perfect top 5, though not in that order.

I think I'm the only person on the planet who thinks Zelda II the adventures of link is second behind OoT

imo

1) A Link to the Past
2) Link's Awakening
3) Zelda 2 : The Adventure of Link
4) A Link Between Worlds
5) The Wind Waker
6) Twilight Princess
7) Majora's Mask
8) Ocarina of Time
9) Skyward Sword
10) The Minish Cap
11) Oracle of Ages
12) Oracle of Seasons
13) The Legend of Zelda
14) Spirit Tracks
15) Phantom Hourglass

Their list isn't too bad. I'm not a massive fan of OG zelda and never really have been, 2 holds up a lot better nowadays. Such a well designed game.

Top three for me:

3.) A Link to The Past
2.) Wind Waker
1.) Skyward Sword

I can totally see this opinion being mind blowing to some, but we like what we like!

I will never understand why so many people hold TWW in such high regard. I know, different opinions and stuff, but it just has WAY too many flaws IMO.

For me it's :

1. Wind Waker
2. Majora's Mask
3. Ocarina of Time

I'd really like to love Skyward Sword as much as many of you seem to, but I loathed it. :(

1. Ocarina of Time
2. Link's Awakening
3. A Link to the Past

Skyward Sword doesn't deserve to be on the list, not even at the bottom.

I've been finally making headway in A Link to the Past. I don't really get the hype for it, and I loved A Link Between Worlds.

4. Twilight Princess
5. Skyward Sword
6. Ocarina of Time
7. Oracle of Ages
8. Oracle of Seasons
9. Link's Awakening

11. Spirit Tracks
12. A Link To The Past
13. Phantom Hourglass
14. The Legend of Zelda
15. Zelda 2

It may be the nostalgia speaking, but I'd rank Oracle of Ages & Minish Cap much higher. Link to the Past on #1 I something I have to agree with.

I wonder where Breath of the Wild will end up on my ranking. I'd be happy with a Top 3.

A link to the past is the best one.

Next, i sould say oot or zelda1.

Next links awakening.

But all depends on your age and taste. I grew up with zelda1 as my first game.

Zelda bow could hit the nr1 spot, even the best game ever made.

1. Majora's Mask
2. A Link Between Worlds
3. Wind Waker
4. Ocarina of Time
5. Twilight Princess.

That's what I think anyway, but I'll admit I never really got into 2D Zelda. I've liked all the 2D Zelda games that I've played but never got around to finishing them, other than ALBW, if you count that as 2D.

They are missing the best Zelda game, Skyward Sword, completely. Also Wind Waker above Majora's Mask.... Horrible list.

If A Link to the Past would be in my top 10, it would probably be near the bottom. I get that it was an important entry in the series, but it's one of the games that left the least of an impression on me.

Dungeons lack theme-ing and puzzles, and make little use of dungeon items. Its bosses are rarely more than mashy sword fights. Its sprite art is pillow-shaded, inconsistent-perspective amateur hour. Its characterisation is non-existent.

A Link Between Worlds was an improvement on A Link To The Past in pretty much every single way.

What really amazes me about this list is just how consistently great these games are. I mean damn, Skyward Sword, while flawed is still a helluva game and it can't crack the top 10.

Pound for pound Zelda has got to be the most consistent game series ever.

I honestly can see this lists in any order and still respect them, almost all the Zelda games are quality and top tier, so it really goes down to personal preference. Personally Wind Waker is my favorite, followed by Skyward Sword and Link's Awakening on third.

Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda
The Wind Waker

How I rank the rest of them depends on the day.

Also, any Zelda list with Wind Waker in the top 5 is wrong. It's literally incomplete and an average Zelda game at best.

Phantom Hourglass is a top tier game whether you arbitrarily judge them within the context of their own time periods or not.

Ha, we just did our Top 5 favorite Zelda game on our podcast that went up today. Interesting to compare different people's opinions. Spoilers for those who don't have the time to listen, my Top 5 were:

5. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
4. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
3. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Wind Waker is a great game, but the reason why sites like IGN puts it so high is only thanks to its incredible graphics. The game itself was rushed and unfinished, and is nowhere near as good as the other 3D Zelda-games.

I also think Link between Worlds is quite overrated, while it did some interesting things, the rental system made the dungeons far less interesting.

Skyward Sword is underrated on sites like IGN because the writers hate motion controls unfortunately.

Anyways, here is my list:

10 Link between Worlds.
9 Wind Waker
8 Links Awakening
7 Minish Cap
6 Skyward Sword
5 Twilight Princess
4. Zelda 2
3 Majoras Mask
2 Ocarina of Time
1. Link to the Past
