Well I have found a 2nd game that the background Oculus software effects (ovrserver.exe).

Both Doom 2016 and Warhammer Vermintide drop into single digit framerates (to pretty much freezing) every few minutes. These freezing episodes last about 2-4 seconds, and then clear up.

Tracked it to huge network spikes caused by OVRserver running in the background. When I force close it via task-manager, problems disappear.

Anyone else seeing the same issues? I have not found a way to keep it from loading at startup (it is conveniently NOT in the task-manager startup list).

I currently use my onboard ethernet adapter. If I got a dedicated card and used it, think it would solve the issue?
i have the same problem as you. same 2 games

Had the exact same issue, I've no idea why it was using so much data (it wasn't updating any games). If I stopped the process it would just restart so I had to totally disable the Oculus service.

Keep in mind that launching games from Oculus Home is far simpler than launching them from Steam. I've had plenty of stability problems with SteamVR, and I typically have to go into Playback Devices in Windows and set it to play audio on the Rift before I launch any games.

If you've got a game that runs in Oculus Home, all you have to do is slip the headset on, look at the game you want to run, and hit A on the controller. Done. With Steam, things get complicated enough that I can't even give you a step-by-step series of instructions. The SteamVR experience, to me at least, reminds me too much of how VR worked back when the Rift DK2 was all we had, and I'm glad to have put that behind me.

Btw, if you already own Elite Dangerous, you can use their website to request codes for both Steam (if you don't already have it there) and Oculus Home, so you get the best of all worlds. I use the Oculus Home version since I have no desire to ever again play that game outside of VR anyway.

Damn, that does sound annoying. I guess I'll have to see how much of an annoyance it is, but I'm hoping to keep most of my library in Steam.

Does the Oculus store have any demos of their games available?

Here my impressions after one day. Negatives first:

-Really hard to use with glasses. Yesterday I used contacts and had a great time. Its not that it doesnt fit, but the Oculus is pressing the glasses on my head from the sides. After a while it actually hurts. And they get smudged...
-Right now when its hot you notice your head gets warm under the Oculus.
-Seems you really need to get VR legs. Yesterday I could only stomach 1 hour of Oculus testing, today it was 2. It seems it also depends on what you are using. I used VD/BSB a lot today and maybe my eyes are focusing too much on fonts. If I use the cinema screen to browse the web, it feels a bit more uncomfortable after a while compared to the computer room. Games itself make me more sick though. Project Cars is okay as well as Luckys Tale but for games like Solus Project, Amigdala etc. I need to grow VR legs I guess.
-God Rays are not as bad as I thought they would be. I mean they are really bad when scenes are dark, but I watched some Anime in the cinema and didnt really notice them. When I watched Daredevil you might notice them if you focus on it, but also didnt have a problem.

Positives:

-3d movies look great.
-BSB/VD are great apps. I think they might become really useful when the next iterations of VR headsets come out. Right now they are also good, but I couldnt imagine just using VR for normal desktop use because of the resolution.
-Experiences are great. Downloaded some short movies and so and they are just fun.

I only have a vive but this seems like an exaggeration. If I want to play Lucky's Tale with Revive, all I have to do is press the button on the headset, wait for things to connect, use the gamepad to select lucky's tale in my library and launch it.

I don't see why launching steamvr games with a rift would be any more difficult than that. It's probably even faster on a rift since you don't have to wait for lighthouses to spin up and connect.

SteamVR does lose your audio settings occasionally but you just have to pick the headset from the dropdown when that happens.

Yea I have a rift and launching games from steam is super easy. I click play and put on my headset and I'm in the game. It doesn't get much simpler than that. Never had a problem with steamVR and the rift.

Has anyone tried out Ascension VR yet? Looks like it could be pretty cool although I don't know how to play it haha. It doesn't look too tough to figure out

I have the same experience - oculus always works 100% for my rift, and steam is a pain that either doesnt work, or works after I reboot the PC or I have to launch the game outside of steam vr

I still buy on steam whenever I think I may not like the game since you can get a refund which is a huge advantage over oculus. So each has its advantages.

I always put in my contact lenses before using Rift so I cant comment on the glasses issue. I got the impression that glasses mean hassle with VR as of now V1 VR headsets.

In terms of getting warm with oculus - this doesnt happen to me since getting the fit just right with rift - ie I adjust the straps and make sure that, for example, I am not breathing out into the rift headset. it DID happen with the gear vr, so perhaps you havent adjutsed it correctly?

VR legs wise - nope, have a zero tolerance level. If a game makes you feel uncomfortable, immediately stop it. Games like Chronos work 100% with 0% nausea, dont accept any level of nausea for a game, it will ruin your evening. If a game concerns you about nausea, buy on steam so you can get a refund.

After my first day with my new Rift, I gotta say I love it! The depth everyone talks about is unreal. Actually being able to see how far in front of you something is and being able to move your head and look at stuff is great!

Some questions I had:

  • Is text not as crisp for everyone? Is this a side effect of the screen door effect?
In Elite: Dangerous, which I've played pre-Rift, the cockpit text was super sharp, but now it doesn't look as crisp with a Rift on. Is this me not calibrating the focus correctly or the SDE?
Another example is looking at the HUD elements on the bottom left of Adr1ft. It's kinda hard to read what they are.
  • Does the HUD for most games feel too zoomed in? For example in E:D, I wish the power gauges in the bottom right were in my field of vision when I'm looking straight ahead, I have to slightly move my head in that direction to actually see it.
Same thing with Adr1ft; I find myself leaning in resetting the view and then leaning back to my resting position and I still have to turn my head a bit to see the oxygen levels in the bottom right. Is this by design or me potentially miscalibrating the HMD?
  • I assume the top of the Rift is supposed to get a little hot?

Same "issues" here. I think we are at the first iteration of VR HMDs and these are the drawbacks we have to endure.

I cant wait till CV2,3,4 come out and we will have real crisp visuals. I notice in the VD/BSB, that actually the enviroments are really really clear, but the actual desktop is blurry/not clear/hard to read. If I play 2dl-games thats not a problem, but you really notice it when you turn on a normal 3D game. I mean its not bad, but when you are used to 1080p/1440p or even 4k gaming, the virtual desktop gaming/BSB gaming looks bad in comparison. I think thats similar to what you had when you had a good PC during the Wii-Days and had to play a Wii-Game on a 480p TV.

Just curious, but what's the best way to play non-VR games and watch movies with the rift? Would virtual desktop be my best bet?

Vorpx can make non-VR games work. It doesn't make me sick at all personally, but even if it does make you can play games in a virtual desktop mode as well(though, if that's all you want to use it for the $40 asking price is not worth it).

I'd suggest steamvr theater mode, but it often doesn't work and for browsing it's less than ideal.

I only ever have a problem quitting steamvr and launching games in theatre mode. I get errors for theatre in most games and I've had to force quit multiple processes to quit on occasion.

Played Project Cars and Dirt Rally for the first time yesterday in VR and it was a great experience. I never liked cockpit view before and could not race well in that view.
The added depth of VR is absolutely amazing and helps with racing so well!

I have to say as far as the VR experience goes, I feel like Dirt Rally nails it. Something about the whole time in Dirt felt better. Maybe because I had a dedicated VR Camera Reset button (the CTRL button).

In Project Cars I felt like I had to keep adjusting the virtual seat or my physical seat to match up with the guy in-game. It's so much easier to find a good position and then just hit CTRL to match it up in Dirt Rally.

Virtual Desktop seems to give me better performance with 2D games compared to BigScreen. Movies I haven't watched a lot of in the Rift, to be honest, but Virtual Desktop seems to work fine. A while back I also liked an app called Cineveo, but I don't know if it is updated to the latest SDKs.

You can assign a dedicated button in Project Cars. I agree with you though Dirt Rally feels and looks much better. Have you tried downsampling using the debug tool? It looks amazing at 1.5 or 2. Assetto Corsa also looks and feels amazing. At 2.0 downsampling and ultra settings it's one of the best looking VR games and is a fantastic sim.

I'll have to try that out.

One thing I was disappointed in was that the rear-view/side mirrors don't track their reflections to the HMD movements.

Just a heads up to anyone interested, I managed to extend the rift and sensor by 10M (~33ft) tonight. After trying various HDMI and USB extenders without luck, I was about to give up but I have found a winning combination.

For USB I am using a Cable Matters 10M Active USB3.0 cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VDVCQ84/?tag=neogaf0e-20. For HDMI I am using an AV Access 4K HDbaseT HDMI extender. Both products work flawlessly, although the USB extender was picky about which USB3.0 port I used on my motherboard. The 4K extender can go up to 40M and I believe you can daisy chain the USB cables. Anyway this combo has allowed me to move my rift to a room with much more space, hope it helps someone :D

edit: I should note in the short time I have used it, I haven't noticed any lag, degradation or drop outs.

I am losing the will to live.

Purchased and received my Rift and plugged it into the USB 3.0 ports on my Z170-A which the tool said were compatible. Everything worked but when playing Lucky's Tale the camera went all skewed and the sensor had a warning message saying it wasn't detected properly etc.

I updated the USB drivers on the Asus site etc.

Changed ports, everything worked fine then the same happened. Changed to put the sensor in the USB 3.1 port and that seemed to sort the issues.

In the meantime I'd ordered this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00B6ZCNGM/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I installed it and was unable to get drivers off their support site for some reason. But when I plugged the Rift in it was recognised but then I started to get the same tracking issues I had at the start!

Going mad...any suggestions?!

Could be a dodgy camera or something?

To add to oculus versus steam, I do find Steam harder to use but it obviously has other benefits.

I tried launching games direct from desktop but that seemed worse, so now I click steam vr and do it from inside the headset.

Inside the headset it is harder to navigate steam big picture mode and find and choose the game...but not crazy hard.

I tend to find Steam vr crashes when I try to exit it. And if it does exit it quite often messes the sound settings and you have to switch it back to rift. I've also had it where the sound was switched in windows but steam hadn't registered the change so I had to exit it all and start again.

While oculus home doesn't have very many features, it is pretty slick and stable.

I just installed a new oculus into an i5, 970, with 16gb of ram. In the headset I can see the store but when I launch anything (like Lucky's Tale), I see the spinning circle in the headset home area, but it never launches the game. On my computer monitor I see a windowed version of the game which is stuck on a black screen. I can hear the game in the headphones.

No matter what I try to play I always get this. I've tried reinstalling the apps and even the Oculus home software. My video card drivers are up to date.

Anyone have any similar issues?

In order to super sample is it basically:

Use the Oculus SDK method to SS any games launching from Oculus Home.

Add the config entry to Steam for any titles launching in SteamVR.

If I do both, I'm good regardless?

Also, anyone with a 1080 tried 2.0 and how was the performance?

Hey guys,

Looking to buy a Rift this weekend. I was impressed with VR after trying VRidge (streaming Oculus games onto my phone) on my s7. Since the s7 is 1440p does that mean that I should expect worse picture quality on the Rift?

Also, has anyone tried the following games?

Chronos
Adrift
Edge of Nowhere
The Climb

I was looking to buy those 4 games, are any of them worth it. Do they provide you with a true VR experience?

Thanks in advance!

The 1440p resolution of the screen is cut in half though for each eye (the Gear VR basically sends half the screen to the left eye and half to the right) versus Rift having a dedicated 1080p display per eye, so you'll get great results with the rift. It was a huge step up for me after trying the S6 Edge with Gear VR, far more impressive (though I think Gear is great value for $99).

Chronos is amazing IMO if you like dark souls type combat. Also really liked Edge of Nowhere - these 2 games felt the most like "real games" in the sense of high production values. Adrift I avoided due to comments in reviews about motion sickness so you may want to buy on steam so you can refund it or play non VR. The climb has some great reviews, I avoided it due to a suspicion that I would get motion sickness so I would see if you are vulnerable to it in general (motion sickness) before buying.

Check out Abe VR on Rift too, its free, short but good.

Any game with a cockpit view works reall with the Rift, Euro Truck Simulator 2 for example and project cars, elite dangerous, house undying sun etc.

I enjoyed Chronos and Edge of Nowhere quite a bit. The scale offered by VR is impressive and the games are fun in their own right. I think some people would argue about the "true VR experience", but they are solid.

Once most own accessory with VR - central air.

It's too hot to put my headset on in this place. Can't wait to move to my new apartment for year round VR.

I got my Rift last week and Adr1ft was one of the games I got. It's a neat game, but I hate how the oxygen system makes you constantly on the move to find oxygen.

So yes, it works pretty well in VR being able to look around and stuff, but the helmet cam can be annoying.

I personally have found my best VR Experience to be in Dirt Rally!

Is there anything special I need to do when selling my rift? I remember people saying your account is tied to it. Can I unlink it?

Chronos is amazing. Dark Souls x Zelda x Old school Resident Evil

Ending was kinda lame and abrupt though.

Messed around with Minecraft a bit last night and that is very well done. Tried to explain to a friend how VR really amplified the scale and also the elements of the game I found scary originally. Where I'd normally have no problem exploring at night after countless hours with the game outside of VR, I found myself hiding in a house literally peering out of windows to survive the first night. Really tremendous stuff.

How is movement in Minecraft for Rift? Have they done anything special to mitigate motion sickness?

Disclaimer: I only played for a couple minutes

I didn't see any option for teleportation movement, but you can set it to turn your view in angled increments. (or you can just turn your head)

One thing that seems well implemented is that you can quickly change between a 2d TV screen view and a full VR view. The TV view makes it look like you're playing Minecraft on a big screen TV while sitting inside a Minecraft house, and then you can push a button to pull yourself into the TV and be in VR mode.

Even with the choppy turning, it makes me sick very quickly. The movement speed is very fast, I tried crouching to slow myself down which works a little bit, but you can't go off ledges or jump in crouch. Jumping also feels awful.

What is the deal with Oculus support? My headset is defective and they haven't replied to my support ticket in over 4 days. At this rate, it will take 4 months to get my headset fixed or replaced.

Alright. Now I get a HDMI issue. Somehow my Oculus, whenever I move it, is losing the HDMI connection... Great...

Have you checked the connection to the headset itself. The wire from the HDMI/USB cable can actually disconnect from a port on the headset. You can't see it, but it's there.

Another gaffer had a similar issue and it turned out that it was loose.

Yeah. I already got it off and reattached it and it seems its not loose at all.

It looses the connection if I move the headset. But sometimes even if its just on the desk I get a notification "HDMI not plugged in". Already tried other USB-ports, because some say it might be because of the USB ports, but doesnt really help. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the video drivers, but also doesnt help.
From Oculus Support I first got the usual "Have you tried that, have you done that", but nothing yet. Sent them a video of the issue and hopefully the only issue is the cable and not the headset itself. Gonna wait till they answer...
