Thanks, I did not know this. Helpful as I no longer have to hit every system on the path and can pick and choose which system I go to.

Is there a summary of the star types vs. resources out there?
We're in the early part of this research. Simplest for now, look for systems beginning with the letter O for a high chance of one or more planets with very rare resources.

After spending the better part of the past week talking about the game I decided to take a chance and give this a go. My initial impressions are that the it is sorta kinda alright as far as survival games go. My only major gripes are the ship controls with mouse and keyboard. They defy all logic and are absolutely terrible.

It's terrible by design (if it's good design or not is another discussion).

When you install handling upgrades, it gets much much better. The first upgrade alone makes a big difference.

Well, how much you invest into your ship is up to the player, 40 might be well over the amount that some people ever need. It all depends on what you're trying to do.

What do you mean 'trying to do'? At this point, for me, there's nothing TO do. Other than explore and upgrade my ship slots by finding crashed ones. For which I don't need any great amount of minerals in particular.

Once you've built the best warp drive and a ship / multi-tool combo capable of besting whatever the game can throw at you in combat then 'slots' and 'units' really cease to matter.

Okay. I didn't mean you, sorry. Just in general.

Some shots from my snow planet today.

Dude, that's looks awesome!

What type of system is this in?

Agrees PC controls are pretty bad right now. I absolutely HATE having A & D bound to roll the ship.

If I had it my way, A & D would be bound to strafe turn, and the mouse would be only for pitch. Hope they change this....

Neat. I didn't know there was handling upgrades for the ship.

But yeah, I was wrestling with the controls for a good 10 mins before I got a handle on them. I'll manage but I'd like to see HG implement an alternate control scheme that's similar to ED, which felt totally natural.

It was just an Atlas path system, everything else in the system is pretty dead. Haha, I think it's was supposed to be an extreme weather system really but that planet ended up looking amazing. I'm now getting burnt to death on a different moon.

yesterday i found an exotic element, Hecate or something like that it only gives you 2 per rock you mine.

should i sell it or keep it?

If you don't have anything to use it on right away, you'll be holding on to it for a long time. There are so many elements in the game that you can't really have them all. The rare elements are sometimes found from traders, so if you need it, you might be best of looking for those at traders rather than places that actually have them. So it's like with everything in this game; if you know something you can use it for, keep it. Otherwise, sell.

I don't know how I feel about this, to be honest. It kind of ruins any sense of progression with ships.

Crashed ships should have a random amount of slots, with rare ones having more slots than the one you have instead of consistently having always 1 more slot. Imagine the feeling of discovery if you stumbled upon a ship that has 10 more slots than your current.
I agree with you in theory and I feel the game would be better if it worked that way...but it doesn't. The price of new ships becomes so absurd after a certain point, I feel the above +1 slot strategy is the most logical step forward once you hit a 30-35 slot ship.

In my random space stations, I was seeing 40 slot ships for 20-25 million. When I upgraded my warp reactor, I was seeing ships over 50 million. Right now with my maxed out vessel, I'm seeing 45 slot ships on sale for 140 million. Making that kind of money for incremental slot upgrades just isn't viable.

My Wishlist:

- Allow to Rebind Keys for Ship Controls.
- Let me fly as I want, no limit when I am close to the ground.
- Fix Mouse Sensitivity.
- Bring back a more prominent planet rotation
- Delete & Set Custom Waypoints
- Add Cool Weather Effects (Storms, Twisters, Lighting ,Sand Storms...etc)
- Hide/Show HUD or Photo Mode

These fixes would make the game 100% more enjoyable for me. Especially the top 3

So I managed to locate an atlas station. It was an incredible feeling of dread that had me asking, "am I helping a benevolent force or do I encroach ever closer to my doom?" They absolutely nailed some vintage sci fi elements with how there are no apparent answers to everything and especially not much hand holding. As well as the geometric shapes of the ruins, atlas stuff and stuff like that. In fact, makes me want to go and read some classic books that had these elements like unknown tech, or mysterious monoliths, ships or locations. The ones that spring to mind are Gateway, Rendevous with Rama and Ringworld. Anybody have any more suggestions?

The Heechee books, The Xelee books, The Great Sky River series. You can find them on wikipedia.
We also have pretty regular science fiction recommendation threads over in OT you might want to check out.

1000% agree on all points. Weather would make planets so much more immersive.

I hope some of the planned updates include shoring up the space combat a bit. I don't mind it for what it is but it is very simplistic. At the very least I'd like to see some secondary weapons and the ability to hire wingmen.

I know this is asking a lot, but I'd really like to see a basic quest system implemented for space combat: Join this fleet and attack that fleet for an increase in faction standing and a pile of units. Help fend off this incoming pirate raid and get a rare blueprint of expensive crafting item. Escort this trader from Planet a to Planet C for information on where to find a relic. Basic, radiant AI style procedurally generated quests to flesh out the space portion beyond just fighting off random swarms of fighters.

We definitely need lightening, crazy winds and hopefully tornadoes (even if they don't have real physics).

Speaking of weather, the sound of raindrops hitting the cockpit is simply fantastic.

Weather effects do exist though. I've been through a couple of storms, at least.

Totally agree. Space combat needs some kind of hook.

Yeah, search for "transmissions" with the scanners and it's the transmission towers that allow you to locate crashed ships. Activating beacons that you find will point you to shelters and some of those camps also have transmission towers.

Thanks! I have been following the advice to find drop pods and factories (for plans) but didnt really use the other two scan options much.

Hopefully I will find a good ship to upgrade from my starter lying around somewhere :)

All good additions. The weather stuff is especially interesting to me. As it is right now, even the "storms" on severe-weather planets don't pose much of a threat. I want natural disasters that force you to find shelter right fucking now or you'll die in seconds.

You will find a ship with exactly one slot more than the one you have.

I was on a freezing planet and couldn't be out for more than 30 seconds without recharging my shield. Couldn't see much either. It was kind of fun because I found a broken ship but didn't have the materials to fix it, so I had to look around finding caves and stuff to shelter.

Best source of iridium is those big potato asteroids, you just need to keep trying them round different planets / systems until you find one that has what you want.

Salvage downed ships.
If you find some without more slots or even. You can enter them.break them down and get mats. I was stuck in a system with no chrysonite and i found a ship and that helped.

I tend to find iridium in space quite a bit. Now I'm trying to find aluminium.

I like the game a lot but at this point I would pay to remove space combat. It's so awful and only serves as an annoyance. I just let them kill me now since it lets me continue the game faster.

Thanks guys!

There were two planets I was on that we're chrysonite, aluminum, and gold heaven. One of them has aqua spheres, so I spent a good ten minutes farming them and got half a mil. It was getting late so I stopped. I'll farm for more later.

And yeah, not a fan of the combat in space. Although yesterday I took out five pirates. The mining beam is super effective sinc wit locks on to them. Once I get a ship with more room and a better layout, I'm going to upgrade the mining weapon on my ship.

A different question:

I noticed that if you dismantle the scanner, it appears again in the recipe menu so you can build it again. Does the same apply to something like the hyperdrive? I'd like to rearrange things on my ship like I do my mutltitool, but I'm afraid to delete something I may not be able to fix.

I'm at 39 or so exosuit slots after last nights adventures. My wife was playing it while I beat Song of the Deep, so I didn't get to play as long as I'd have liked, but at least I got a few things off of my list. I still have to get some iridium, but I'm also a little hesitant on building the advanced warp drive with it, because I really want to upgrade my ship once I'm done with the suit.

I haven't experienced any weather effects yet, but very much looking forward to them.

I've been spoiled by the storms from Mad Max, I need that in NMS :D

When you are looking at the galaxy map, there are orbs at the top of the screen which indicate different paths:
  • path to the galaxy center
  • free view
  • path to
    Nada and Polo
  • path to a blackhole
  • path to
the big thing which gives atlas stones and language words
Am I right? I am not certain about the third one.

I am determined to stick it out on this 200C planet to get that goddamn survival trophies. After the silver and gold for them I just need to complete the warping milestones and I'll be at platinum.

hmm i suppose that's the best choice, right now i dont have anything that needs it.

That would be kind of cool. At this point I don't see a reason to use the weather protection upgrades, I'd rather have the inventory space.

Slightly off of the weather topic, but I think another slight improvement would be if you get shot down in space you crash land on the nearest planet and have to repair your ship, as opposed to the quick death screen they have now.

Has anyone been shot down on the planet surface? Do you just die there also?

The third one is path to current waypoint for me.

A question regarding the center of the galaxy so spoilers obviously.

I had attained 10 atlas stones and had requested for a new galaxy to be generated, which I'll be able to access through the center of the galaxy. So what happens when players don't follow the path by Atlas and just focus on getting to the center? What waits for them then, does anyone know?

Currently on my third galaxy, but still have my starting ship. I realize everyone's path is different, but have most people gotten a new ship at this point? The ones in the space stations are always too expensive, and the crashed ones I've come across haven't fit my taste.

Giving Atlas the Stones makes it birth a Star System that another player who's just starting their game will spawn on.

There are ship handling upgrades? I hadn't even checked properly. I thought it was just warp drives. Talking of warp drives, how do you get hold of a large amount of chrysolite?

I have been in Heat and Radiation Storms that forces you to find shelter. Not cause the wind or something like that, but 'cause your Exosuit/Life Bar depletes in seconds.

Great somehow the latest NVIDIA drivers broke No Man's Sky on PC, now I can't even get past the white screen.

Yup, gone from 60 - 100fps on a 1070 with very occassional stutters, to insane 2 second long stutters every time I attempt to move.

Wonderful and I can't even get past the title screen and the game stutters even more

After almost a week of procastinating and enjoying visiting planets, finally arrived at
the Atlas station
. I had kept myself mostly spoiler free, so it was a huge surprise for me. I was a bit amazed at the size of the thing, and there was indeed a lot of dread involved. Only now getting
my first V1 pass stone, or i think it is that
makes me think I am still in turorial-like early stages lol.

Oh and Aeration Membrane is just Awesome! Found not quite an ocean planet but one with deep seas, and the membrane and having a reserve of Zinc/ Platinum make it really a great experience.
Now, one weird thing: i picked a Tau version (which thankfully I built right away), and then later on got a (supposedly inferior) Sigma version as an automatic reward (never had a choice in picking it up).
Thing is, the Sigma version is the only one appearing in my recipes now.... is that normal?

Anyone been to water planets yet? I found one that was like 80% water, found an upgrade that let me breath underwater. Pretty neat. Game suddenly turns into Subnautica, lol.

Yeah. I had to build those weather upgrades in one planet and even then the energy would deplete very quickly.

the new nvidia drivers are working fine for me, actually boosted my FPS quite a bit. A few others in the PC thread had the same results...

and some others had bad results....
