No Man's Sky |OT| Hello Worlds.

The space battles feel really unbalanced. I'm in the 4th star system on the Atlas path and warped in to a freighter battle with 22 enemy crafts. I mined gold for a few hours this weekend and bought a 2M ship that should be very capable for the area I'm in, but there was literally nothing I could do. I killed a couple of them and then attempted to flee because they were swarming so fast I could barely see them. Am I missing something, or does the game give you no viable method of retreat? For some ungodly stupid reason it locks out your pulse engine when enemies are nearby, thereby dooming you to die.

Land into a space station or land on the ground of a planet, preferably after killing part of the chasing force.

The more I play the game the more I think two things:

1. It is made for VR.

(I know it's not literally made for VR, I just mean it is a completely perfect fit.)

In VR, even mundane or dull mechanics become engrossing and awesome. Look at all the very low scale or mechanically simple experiences which are amazing once you're wearing the HMD. No Man's Sky is the epitome of this. The mechanics are okay, they're fine, but mechanics which are 'okay' or 'fine' become 'awesome' in VR because they're imbued with scale and intimacy you just don't get from a screen. I no longer scan plants and trees in NMS because you don't get any benefit out of it, even if I might be looking at a cool variant. But in VR, walking up to a tree, and physically tilting your head + spine back to glare up at it, then holding a button to scan it, would be awesome, even if it becomes completely dull after a while on-screen.

I imagine the scale of the game's universe and planets will smack you in the teeth when you boot the game in VR. Each planet will become an actual place, and what's more, you don't need graphical fidelity to get total immersion in VR. It helps, but simple and inelegant graphics often work absolutely fine. NMS has that in spades.

We know the team have clearly wrestled with how the game would work in VR. But honestly I'll happily double dip on PC once the inevitable (and undoubtedly awesome) VR mod is out.

2. It's made for multiplayer.

Again, obviously it's not literally made for multiplayer. And what's more - I never wanted multiplayer for this game and I'm not bothered that they didn't include it.

But this is one of those games where all the little things which elicit nothing but a minor smirk (or even a moment's thought) when playing by yourself would become a proper laugh with a friend. Getting into space battles would be more engaging. Finding cool caves or weird creatures would have that 'Hey, look what I found!' goonies-style vibe. And this would enhance the experience tenfold.

This struck me last night when I realised, 30 hours in (and enjoying it), that I really wanted my best friend to hop into the game with me so we could both take on that 30-ship space battle.

Hopefully they'll patch it in.

I don't know how I feel about this, to be honest. It kind of ruins any sense of progression with ships.

Crashed ships should have a random amount of slots, with rare ones having more slots than the one you have instead of consistently having always 1 more slot. Imagine the feeling of discovery if you stumbled upon a ship that has 10 more slots than your current.

Having random amounts of slots would only be balanced if ships got special properties. Something has to come of you going and finding a ship.

Say if you got lucky and found a maxed-out 48-slot ship in your first two hours of gameplay, you'd miss out on the entire progression loop because of that RNG system.

i just realized the game has no forest like environments that we've seen in 2014 gameplay. Nor do thy have tall palm trees.

Someone posted a screenshot of a fairly dense looking coniferous forest in the OT in the last day or two. I haven't run across any yet, but I'm less than 10 planets in, so to be expected.

When you are looking at the galaxy map, there are orbs at the top of the screen which indicate different paths:
  • path to the galaxy center
  • free view
  • path to
    Nada and Polo
  • path to a blackhole
  • path to
the big thing which gives atlas stones and language words
Am I right? I am not certain about the third one.

I'll be frank, the galaxy map isn't the most intuitive. I definitely need to learn it better.

Just limit the level of ships you can find, relative to the ship you own. Max of 10 more slots for example, instead of just one.

And if they are that much better, they should also be harder to fix.

Heck, they could even allow you to find 48 slot ships if RNG was in your favor, as long as they made it incredibly hard to fix for someone who doesn't have access to rare materials and blueprints. So you could set a waypoint and come back later.

At least half of that is false, as I've seen numerous tall palm trees.

That's the thing with a game like this, if you don't see something in a playthrough, it's easy to assume it's not there. I've played it on PC for 30 hours and finished the atlas path and haven't seen anything resembling a tropical paradise. But I know they're out there.

The Vy'keen are definitely The Multitool People. Actually makes sense since
they're warriors and technically these are this universe's weaponry.
If you're starving for upgrades like I have been definitely spend some time in a Vy'keen system.

I've watched this dozens of time now, I'm dying. I adore No Man's Sky, but the second animal really is a good representation of its fauna in general.

I want to post some funny animals that I encountered recently: from the procedural hybrid to the dinosaur with a cat stance.

You just haven't found a highly forested planet yet. They absolutely exist and they're awesome.

And yes, as a mod mentioned, plenty of very tall trees. I found a planet covered in 40-foot mushrooms one time.

I was on a planet with forests. It was kind of a pain because I couldn't boost jump much further because I kept stumbling into trees.

Same, I've been on planets with a forest before. They're extremely rare though and fucking exciting when you stumble across one!

This whole Gek transmission tower thing is also how I found my Theta and Omega warp drive upgrades. I got both of them from those beacons next to the crashed ship.

The third one doesn't exist. That just pops up every few systems you visit. I think it's meant to be a space/time anomaly.

Trully starting to hate space battles in this game. It usually goes like this: I fly in my 25 slot ship, warp somewhere, get intercepted. Huge pile of enemies warps in and kills my shields in seconds, during which I've maybe killed one of them with souped up phase beam. There's no escaping them and wiggling like in normal space sims doesn't seem to hinder their aim much either.

Question regarding Atlas Path

So I have been to ten of those Atlas Interfaces and received ten of those stones. Now what? Do I just keep trekking to the eleventh Atlas Interface?

Fuck. Steam sharing is broken. Played for an hour through a friend's shared library, uploading stuff I found.

Restart the game.

Every discovery is now his...

Yes, it's frustrating seeing people assert baldly that stuff isn't in the game, especially when you've seen that stuff. Fully half of the complaints about stuff not being in there have just been completely wrong. I'm only sixteen hours in because of a gimped wrist, but I've seen big crashed ships, flying snakes, palm trees, predation, animal habits, water worlds, etc. I haven't seen a single desert world, but I'm not going to assume they don't exist because of that. I'd never seen a water world until I stumbled on one last night.

How huge a 'huge pile' of enemies are we talking? The most I've ever been intercepted by was three and they're easy to dispatch.

I've been attacked by 7 before.

Yeesh.

Carcetti - I recommend having at least two full stacks of Titanium stored on your ship at all times. You can farm sentinels for it. Get used to quickly popping into your inventory and recharging your ship deflector shield mid-fight.

How watery was this water world? I've found worlds covered in archipelago but I'd really like to find one that's almost all water.

Yeah, desert worlds exist in various forms and can actually be a bit pretty.

I've seen tall trees, just not palm like trees. But I'll take besada's word for it that they exist.

Giving Atlas the Stones makes it birth a Star System that another player who's just starting their game will spawn on.

More center of galaxy talk:

oooh, so players starting now have a chance to spawn on the second galaxy??

But that still doesn't tell me what happens when someone reaches the center who doesn't follow atlas and didn't have the 10 atlas stones.

It's best remembering that the game is unfathomably huge and that while the algorithm tends to output samey/mundane stuff, it can also generate the amazing kinds of shit we've seen in trailers. It's all there, just rare. You might never see it even if you visited a planet every minute for the rest of your life (though they've obviously tried to balance the algorithm so that there's some balance, so that timescale is probably an exaggeration :p).

I'm actually wondering that too, theres someone on Reddit who's never followed Atlas and he's at the last Star from the Centre. His drive is messed up so he can't make the jump towards the centre.

This is probably a good time to plug the great photo OT for this game!

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1259850

If you are wondering if something is in the game or not at least look through there first. It can have light spoilers for someone who wants to be totally blind though.

Also, if you've taken nice or unique shots yourself please post them there! It's a great thread for seeing what kind of things this game has.

Edit: Top of the page was an accident, haha. Seriously though, check out that thread.

Damn, I keep forgetting to strip crashed ships I don't want for parts.

Does this work though? Don't you have to actually swap ships before you can do that? Swear I tried this and couldn't break down anything because I didn't switch ships.

Yeah, just land next to it, accept the new ship, dismantle everything in it, turn around and re-accept your old ship.

Ah, okay. Does it cost units to switch ships or is it free?
