No Man's Sky |OT| Hello Worlds.

People haven't really gotten the fact that game dev is often about trying to hit a moving target. Things change. I do think though that Hello Games just speaking to that would have gone a long way.

Communication is by and large the biggest failing here. You're right, things change. But that's where having someone who is in charge of messaging is so important. Sean pulling double duty on coding and PR is what largely led to the disconnect between what was originally promised/hinted at, and what they eventually delivered. Inexperience, naivety and possibly a bit of hubris seem to underline a lot of the messaging decisions from Hello Games.

Note the various colored borders of the different groups of components. That colored border indicates synergy bonuses from grouped up components.

Wow, thanks a lot. There are so many things to learn in this game... I really miss a manual.

Is there any good tutorial I can look at?

So I got a Warp Drive Theta blueprint. Said I already had the blueprint. I don't. It is not in my inventory. I do not have this Warp Drive. I cannot build it. I cannot get the blueprint. This is a known glitch, yeah? Am I fucked?

I found a metal ball by a Gex ruin that I could physically push around and it would roll down hills and stuff. Anyone else seen that? No idea what the point was or if it was a bug.

The Crowbcat thread brought me here, I just wanted to say that was some hilarious stuff, I laughed all the way.

Then I watched his other vids and laughed even harder.

Nobody knows what those golden orbs may or may not be for. I've seen them around ruins pretty often.

This game reminds of Minecraft, my hope is the community that does like the game sticks with it. I feel if the dev team and community don't get discouraged it could and will be a great game.

-Planets do rotate, and they explicitly said they toned it down, because people were getting disoriented.

Really? At what speed?

- Flying between star systems manually sounds like a great way to kill myself out of boredom, though admittedly it would be cool to find random stuff floating out in space, I'd much rather they focus their effort on the core gameplay, which as is evident still has more higher priorities than this to address.

The fact that it's a dumb thing to do doesn't make it "blatantly false"

This one wasn't golden, just grey I think. It was weird (and very exciting lol) to see something I could 'kick' around instead of interacting with by pressing square.

I'm on the same planet as someone else. I can't see them, but they are uploading discoveries and so am I. Together we're finding everything.

How fucking cool.

Edit: Never thought this would happen - especially not so early (on my 10th planet)

Ya I've interacted with 3 of the same object you are describing in a weird structure and it didn't do anything other than roll.
Might be hidden Easter eggs in their not figured out yet? Or might be nothing...

This is dope. I would carve messages into the rocks if I knew they could see it.

that's incredibly amazing..

you get a kind of feedback about what the other person is discovering?

This, spot on. I just wish people would stop using this reality as an excuse to spew bile out towards them. It's crazy how noted liars like Todd Howard and Randy Pitchford get praise on here but Murray is getting some of the worst attacks I've seen directed towards a developer in a long time.

Nothing was going to dissuade me from a day one purchase. I'm already in love. I am trying to get to some ruins at they are literally 40 plus minutes away. I just started walking and going. This is such a cool premise of a game.

Yes it's a glitch, and it happens with any blueprint from time to time. I verified this by reloading right after it didn't give me the BP and tried again but it still didn't work. So, sorry, you'll have to keep looking for it.

I've said it before, but I have always been under the impression that, if he could have, Sean Murray and Hello Games would have delayed No Man's Sky until 2017, if not longer. I think the team had every intention of including the things seen in early trailers, and talked about in interviews in the finished product. Unfortunately, business contracts don't always allow for that type of creative expression. It was one thing when Hello Games was working on this project in their own indie studio bubble. Once they signed whatever deal they signed with Sony, I imagine a great deal of that freedom was reduced. They were no longer able to take as much time as needed to implement every feature they wanted to implement.

I think the delay to August was a courtesy. It was a "get this thing done because we're trying to make money this summer" sort of courtesy. For better or worse, Hello Games had to ship the game no matter what. I believe they tried to create as complete a game as they could, with as many of the features that were functioning at, or close enough to 100% to not completely disappoint.

I bet a lot of the missing content will be added over time. That's unfortunate that it couldn't all be there day one. But it's also the reality of the industry. No one is more disappointed by the inner politics of game development than the developers themselves. There isn't one out there that doesn't want to release a game that they can be proud of, and that the intended audience loves. Most of us create the things we'd like to see/play/read, etc, etc, so when we fall short, for whatever reason, it sucks.

I generally agree with all of this. I don't know whether it was a contractual obligation or money ("We have gone massively into debt to make this game, as a studio."), or both. But it's obvious given the lack of QA that it was pushed out of the nest quite suddenly, and with features pulled out whole-cloth.

I hope it does become the game (and more) that we were shown, and I think Sean probably wants that also, though I worry that I will be done with the game before that happens.

One thing I'd say though: we have to keep in mind that it was Sean who accepted Sony's help. He wanted to play at the big table and knew what he was getting into. Also, many of his friends and colleagues, after their office flooded, said he should do a Kickstarter. He refused. Out of pride? Who knows. But not getting outside funding put them on a tighter timetable, and with perhaps a smaller team, as that Joe Danger money was not going to last forever.

lol yeah, I just asked the same thing on the previous page. Mine was at a large ruins structure in a Korvax system though.

Ive never seen a desert planet...

I took it to mean extremely hot desert planets, that would require special equipment and had precious materials/rarer spots. The planet I landed on was ~200 Celsius when not under storm conditions and only got hotter. I've seen PLENTY of normal sandy planets.

people think they know more about what it takes to make a video game than developers do... its amusing.

the desert planet im on does require special equipment... its too hot to just stand around without any upgrades. and at night its too cold. also... its got TONS of grav balls in the form of weird alien tendrils that ive never seen before.... they pop out of the ground when you get close.

The fact that it's a dumb thing to do doesn't make it "blatantly false"

Sorry I didn't mean that to say everything I commented on was blatantly false, which is why I prefaced with "Some are blatantly false", but then got carried away addressing each point and didn't go back to change my first line.

Can't tell from the GIF but maybe this is a geo-locked moon? I will admit I haven't stood in a single place and watched the sun travel from horizon to horizon, so I could be mistaken. If so I hope they add it back in, because this was 100% in there for the pre-release patch, as I saw it on streams, but didn't confirm it for myself after launch.

It's also really weird how personal it is and how it's directed at one guy. Like I know that this isn't new and that Sean Murray was the guy out there for Hello Games, but the way people direct everything specifically to him is really uncomfortable. I would not like to be a notable individual in the video game industry

that's incredibly amazing..

you get a kind of feedback about what the other person is discovering?

Not while he's actively doing it.

In the discoveries menu when you go to upload something the little icon is yellow instead of green indicating that someone else has found it, and it tells you their name.

Nice, your shots look really nice by the way! I hope I stumble on it one day :)

I wasn't trying to refute what you landed on was what I'd call a desert planet. Maybe I'm giving the complaints too much credit and assuming they meant EXTREME conditions beyond what we can reasonably expect, because if we're just including hot arrid planets that describes a bunch of the stuff I've found so far with varying degree of rarity.

its actually really awesome... its too hot during the day... then at night its freezing. It made it feel like a real desert.

well said. not sure why, but this whole thing's really brought out the worst in a few people up here. seriously undeserved, imo (particularly considering all the stuff these guys managed to get right)...

Do Omega upgrades exist? I'm about 35 hours in, but Theta is the highest tier of upgrades that I've seen.
Yup, I got an Omega upgrade for my omni-tool weapon addition(+5 I think) that i don't even use lol. That's the only Omega I have so far though.

Really? You guys think its "incredibly amazing" and "dope" that they're on the same planet, doing the same things but can't see each other? Sounds horrible to me.

I find amazing that there are 2 person close by, that you know there is someone else in that same solar system discovering things while most of us are so further from each other.

yeah they can't see each other, I don't care...

Anyone know what the largest ship size currently is? Sitting on a fat stack of cash and wondering if I should splurge on a 30 inventory ship if I come across one to my liking.

Wow that's actually great, I was kind of sad the planet I was on stayed hot at night, thinking it would be really cool to find somewhere like Mercury that was blistering hot during the day and cold at night

48 is the max slot for ships as well just like you exosuite inventory.

How bad does the steam PC version run?

Would an Intel i7-4700MQ CPU count as one of the older CPUs that doesn't support SSE 4.1 or whatever it is that crashes the game?

I was never too hyped for this game so I just ignored most of the PR or previews for it.

I guess I'm lucky I did that, this is definitely one of my favorite games to come out this gen.

I learned years ago not to get too invested in an unreleased game. These days I'll read just enough to get the gist of the game; watch a released video or two, check out a preview article when it's close to release, taking everything with a large grain of salt. I wasn't even sure I was going to buy NMS so I certainly wasn't hanging on every word the developers put out there. So I'm enjoying the game I have instead of whining about the game I wish it was and poring over Hello Games' prior statements looking for inconsistencies. Who the hell has time for that?

stop reading the forums... seriously, i fucking love the game... but people here really know how to shit on it... being oblivious to some things people keep pointing out is great.

Holy shit, seriously?
In that case, godspeed on your journey.

Yep haha. It was bound to happen eventually. Want to play Star Ocean 4 now and get Deus Ex and Persona 5 when they release.

All the people harshly critiquing the game have put a damper on things but I haven't really followed the game beyond the released trailers. Good to have my expectations reigned in a little. But this sort of game is something I've wanted for a while.
