Microsoft clarifies whether or not there will be Scorpio exclusive Xbox games

Q: Phil Spencer said that all accessories and all games work across all versions of the Xbox One. But he also said Project Scorpio is specifically the only Xbox that's powerful enough to run VR. I don't quite understand how those two statements can coexist.

Greenberg: The idea was, first, how can we innovate with hardware without sacrificing compatibility? Generally when you bring a new iteration of console hardware you lose compatibility with their games and accessories. So we're saying, if you bought games and accessories for your Xbox One, or you buy an Xbox One S, those games and those accessories are going to work on Project Scorpio. When you think about backwards compatibility and our games lineup, we want gamers to know that when they're ready to upgrade to Scorpio, that content will go with them. That's our promise and commitment around compatibility.

The next thing was "Are you going to make games exclusively to Project Scorpio?" And we said we're not going to have console-exclusive games for Project Scorpio. It's one ecosystem -- whether you have an Xbox One S or Project Scorpio, we don't want anyone to be left behind, Now, with the power and capabilities we have, we'll be able to do high-fidelity VR. Now, that space, we don't think of that as console gaming, we think of that as high-fidelity VR, and so with the VR experiences those will be new things that you will get on Project Scorpio.

Seems sensible, they're looking at VR as a separate platform that can only run on Scorpio - hence the reason Scorpio will have games the Xbox One and S won't.

VR will be treated as different/separate from normal games (Xbox games). All Xbox games will be forward/backward compatible on Xbox One, One S, and Scorpio. While VR experiences will be exclusive to Scorpio.

Regarding console generations, their goal seems to be since the ecosystem is tied to the person (your Xbox account) it moves with you, with games being playable on multiple iterations on hardware, and hardware iterations not tied to a specific period of time.

As for Sony, I think it's become clear to them, that if they try to catch up to Sony by competing in a similar way, it'll never work. So, they're trying to leverage Windows via the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative to grow active users and engagement across multiple devices. PC gamers don't seem very keen on the Windows store (which has had a lot of problems), it will be interesting to see the adoption rate of the Xbox titles on PC, and how this whole thing pans out.

So from what it sounds like VR (Oculus) will be Scorpio exclusive but regular games will not have a Scorpio only version.

Makes sense

I think anyone who isn't being disingenuous knows that it takes a lot of compute power to do high-fidelity VR.

That as much makes sense. So, I'm okay with Scorpio-exclusive VR games. In fact, I'd rather Neo be the base platform for VR in the Sony camp. I don't want either platform being dragged down by their underpowered progenitors.

So there won't be Scorpio exclusive games, it'll just have VR games that are exclusive to Scorpio.

...ok.

Games =/= Experiences.

It sounds like a lot of VR stuff right now is episodic or experience based.

Except for RE7?

All traditional games can be played between Xbox One/S and Scorpio and VR games will be exclusive to Scorpio. Simple logic, Xbox One and S are not powerful enough to deliver proper VR.

I feel like Microsoft never really "clarifies" anything when they're clarifying things. So the answer is no games will be unplayable on old consoles, except VR games, which don't count for some reason.

I understand what they are saying. Expecting VR on base xbone is not really feasible so those games won't qualify for the unified approach. Still pretty weak communication.

I really don't get how you can make this so confusing. I'm stunned by how bad their PR has been this gen. Games will work on all but Scorpio will have exclusive VR features for gaming. Why is that hard to say? Amazing.

I'd actually be a lot more interested in Scorpio if it did have exclusive games. It's coming four years after XB1, so full BC + some exclusives would be a pretty big incentive for me to buy one.

On one hand you think to yourself , "Cool I won't be left behind if i stick with the original version" on the other hand , "Fuck! I bought this newer console but none of these games are taking advantage of this extra power!"

This is what I constantly worry about with the Neo and Scorpio.

I get what he's saying, but that's just plain funny. It's both, Aaron.

VR being exclusive was a given but it not being seen as "console gaming"...come on. You wanted to play the "no one gets left behind" card but this is a ridiculous loophole.

So basically:

Yes, The Scorpio will have exclusive games because the original Xbox One won't support VR. But all non-VR titles will work on Xbox One as well*

*Until the Xbox Sagittarius comes out in 2020

VR 'doesn't count' for many, many reasons. It's disingenuous to say that VR should 'just work' on current-gen consoles. Neither of them was designed for it to begin with. Sony is shoehorning it onto their platform and MS is drawing a line in the sand. Two different approaches, both of which are not simply 'PLUG UR OCULUS INTO UR CONSOLE AND IT WORKS!!'

Yeah. Should have just said that the hardware can't handle the VR. I don't think anyone would be surprised by that statement.

It seems like the simplest answer to the question should be "The hardware takes the same content and cranks out higher FPS so VR doesn't make you sick."

The answer almost sounds like "Xbox games developed before Scorpio will play on the console as upscaled BackCompat titles."

What I think fans are wanting to hear is "Developers can add in enhanced graphical content that will only display when run on a Scorpio, but the same game story/features will still run on the Xbox One S just with fewer particle effects."

I can live without playing VR.
Not sure if you guys saying this truly understand microsoft or if you have been around them since original Xbox.
But this situation isn't going to last long.

Not sure why you belive them nor do I know why they are saying it. Wouldn't even be surprised if they already have exclusive games planned for Scorpio honestly. They are obviously scared to say it right now if true

But they want you and many more on Scorpio and pc, they'd definitely like away from Xbox one completely imo

Devs will pay want to scale up not down too over time and microsoft has the biggest power gap

Would you bet your life on it that they won't? I sure as hell wouldn't.

Vr is irrelevant to this, Can't believe you guys belive thier horse shit poker face.
