Anyone else looking at Sager instead of MSI? I can configure a Sager NP8173-S upgraded with an i7-6820HK for under $1900. A similar MSI runs about $300 more with a smaller SSD, but it does have a 120Hz screen.

Does a 120Hz screen warrant the price difference? Maybe it's also factoring in MSI's better build quality?

I would like to know the answer for this as well. MSI seems to be the top quality but if Sager is still good I would likely go with it considering I can get a 512GB SSD + the upgraded processor for cheaper than the equivalent MSI product.

For those of you hoping to swoop up heavily discounted previous gen models:

graphics performance wise, it looks like 980m SLI is doing great compared to pascal stuff. Might be something to look out for, especially during the holiday black friday/ cyber monday sales.

Anything with SLI is going to be a monster sized laptop no?
And probably still more expensive than single card Pascal.

Plus SLI is a pain in general.

I don't recommend looking for Maxwell bargains since Pascal gives other benefits like heat and form factor.

Is the 120Hz with Gsync?

I was wondering the same thing. It makes no mention of G-Sync anywhere which I think they would if it actually had it since its yet another selling point.

On the PCPer podcast they said the MSI 120Hz laptops did have G-Sync I believe so who knows.

They are G-Sync.

The Sager laptops won't have G-Sync until Nvidia gives them the certified 120Hz driver.

Like usual, MSI was first in line.

How big of a help to battery life is having user switchable graphics like this Sager laptop does? https://www.sagernotebook.com/Notebook-NP8153-S.html They claim you can switch between the 1070 and on board graphics at will. Say you wanted to be on battery surfing the web and switched to the on board graphics, would that be a big help to battery life? Do the MSI laptops with Pascal offer the same thing?

Running off of the iGPU will always extend battery life.

Is the GE72VR a good deal? Size/weight doesn't really bother me.

Looks like one.

Do we have information on the 1040m/1050m and when will it be available?

The desktop 1040 and 1050 have to be announced first.

I've heard tales of that being in September.

Bit the bullet and ordered the ASUS GL502VS, so far super impressed with it! Going to do some more testing, but I'm definitely happy with the purchase.

What do Dell XPS15 owners with the 960m think of the machine? I have the 1080p version but the monitor is pretty bad. Thinking of swapping for the 4K version.

After using my MSI GE62 6QC Apache for four months now, I don't see me ever choosing other brand. It's silent as you wouldn't believe, it never gets even warm let alone hot even during that heat wave we had this summer. The keyboard is nice too.
I seriously have no complaints at all, well maybe sound could be better, but that's nitpicking.
I hope it'll live long because it is a best laptop I ever had, totally worth extra price.

edited: my only regret is not to buying 17", I forgot how small 15" screen really is.

Really? What issues are you having? The 1080p screen has reviewed really well.

any chance that the new MSI or Razer machines will have better battery life? I really want to get a new laptop with a pascal card, but I don't want to be tied down to 3 hours of battery life.

maybe I should just wait for the 1050 to be announced

I mean you really shouldn't be gaming on the go to begin with. Even in many international planes they're starting to have plugs.

I've been having some huge issues with my msi gt72vr. It doesn't recognize my cpu for some reason so i can't install driver updates for it which are highly needed since the last one was from 2010..

it's more for indie games/not super intensive games and stuff like overwatch or league of legends.

i get what you're saying but i'd like my laptop to be capable of at least running games like those and still maintaining a decent charge

I like it. It plays a lot of games well, albeit not on high settings. I travel a lot and have found ti to be a pretty great machine.

I think the successor to the msi gs60 (gs63) has a bigger battery but I could be wrong. Some early previews in the notebookreview site seem to suggest worse battery life though with the new GPUs.

To be honest, I don't think battery life is one of those things you would consider with a gaming-focused laptop. Some are bad and some do better, but they all are pretty terrible in my eyes.

Assume you mean GPU because CPUs don't have drivers. There's bios updates but no driver's for cpus

You should be able to manually install driver updates

Man I'm fucking up.. Should've read up first and now I have done a lot of stuff which probably isn't too great for a new laptop... Sigh. Thank you.
If I do a full reset will everything go back to how it was when I bought it?

You'll get maybe an hour if you play Overwatch or League of Legends. Battery technology sucks.

Yes, the factory reset option puts everything back as if you just booted it for the first time.

Keep in mind, this is a brand new laptop, with a first release GPU. Nvidia hasn't added the mobile 10 series to the WHQL drivers yet, so you'll need to stick with the stock driver for a while.

Guys please I have 2 questions :

- Asus ROG or MSI ?

- 4K or 1080P for a 17"

I am basically hesitating between these two :

http://www.materiel.net/ordinateur-...i7-16-go-ssd-gtx-1070-132494.html#caracDetail

http://www.materiel.net/ordinateur-...i7-16-go-ssd-gtx-1070-132339.html#caracDetail

Stick to 1080p.

Asus inexplicably put almost every single port on the right side, that'd get an immediate pass from me. They also use the absolute worst speakers of any laptops, which is a cardinal sin when charging such a high price.

I'm partial to MSI anyway. Plus having only the color red as an option on the keyboard would annoy me.

Yeah I'll always tell people to go with MSI.

I'll give impressions over my MSI when I receive it.

Of course it'll also depend on the test of time, but my current one hasn't fucked up in any way that isn't my fault.

I've had the GT70 and GT72, neither failed me outside of my own drops and accidents.

Right now the 980M is still beyond powerful enough for me, so I'm waiting for Volta.

I'll see what MSI has in late 2017, there's definitely an MSI GT74 is in my future.

Here's a general question. When do you usually upgrade your laptop?

I'm considering upgrading but wondering if it's a bit too soon. My present machine is MSI GS60 2PC Ghost. It serves me well enough but strains under the weight of most modern releases.

Is the leap from the 860m to the current standard a truly large one?

You upgrade when:

1. The GPU is no longer playing games at a level you consider acceptable.
2. Laptop gets FUBAR'd
3. You want something shiny.
4. All of these above.

If she's still running good and you are content, hold out for next year and Volta.

I think they did with last week's drivers, unless you're referring to something more specific.

Isn't Volta 2018 though?

The GS Series from MSI won't come out for another month or so in my region :-(
Well more time for saving up a bit of money I guess.

Anyone have thoughts on the GT83VR from MSI? I love the keyboard and trackpad, the 18" screen, the fact it has an optical disc drive, and the audio setup on this laptop. Unfortunately it comes with a 1080p screen that only runs at 60Hz, which seems like it would be wasting the either SLI 1070's or SLI 1080's...

Basically, if I'm not hooking this laptop up to any external monitor is it a complete waste? (By the way, I really cannot stress enough how much I love the keyboard/touchpad...)

If that's not a good idea, GT73VR with the 1080 or SLI 1070's?

I had purchased an ASUS GL502VS but have to return it due to a defect and decided I wanted MSI instead.

Seems like I asked my question in the wrong thread.
I have done some cpu benchmarks on my I7 6700HQ on my new msi gt72vr
Now my multi core performance is higher than what I saw in other test from cinebench. But my single core performance is only 104-107 while in tests I saw it should be around 130.. Is this normal?
My multi core performance is 677 while in test I saw it should be 671.

Thinking about waiting for 1050, my budget is really around $1k or less. Do you guys think the 1050 will still be a nice upgrade over a 960M? Like, able to play most games at 1080p on high, and fare decently for at least the next 2-3 years?

I imagine the 1050 will follow the trend of the more expensive cards and offer an almost blow for blow performance of the actual 1050 desktop card so it should be notably more powerful than the 960m.

Not sure what that would actually translate to being able to play what at what resolution for how long though as I've been out of PC gaming for too long to know what real world performance to expect.

Are the 1000 series significantly larger than the previous generation, or is there a chance we'll start to get ultrabooks with 1050/1060 soon?

Would really love a 12-14" with the Zenbook form factor at 4.5lbs or less with a 1060, but something's telling me I'm being unrealistic.

My lenovo y510p is pushing like 3 years old and still going strong. No hardware failures other than the keyboard keys being mega faded and it runs almost everything I currently play at 30 or 60 with at least medium settings which is making it hard to bite the bullet on an upgrade but I think I should start looking at some newer laptops.

What GPU do you have?

It really depends on what type of games you play. If you stick to indie, strategy, world builders (Terraria, Minecraft, Starbound) you really don't need much to get by.

Now if you want to play the likes of The Division (or any Ubi game), you're going to need a capable piece of hardware.. Games like Deus Ex: MD can run moderately on older hardware, while Gears of War 4 would run terribly.

I could get by until next year. I have a 7970m, PC is not my main platform, and I don't play many FPS or graphically demanding games (outside of say The Witcher 3, which runs around 34-48 fps for me, still better than PS4). I guess, I just want something shiny and new. It has been three years, and my card isn't in the same class of a 980m. . Nothing is wrong with my Sager, other than needing a new battery, and the backslash key next to the space bar needs to be replaced (being held on by tape)

Has anyone done financing through these sites like Sager/Xotic PC? I really don't have $2000-2500 currently to drop on a laptop but I'd like to get a new one and not wait the ~3 months it would take probably to save up.
