Resident Evil 7 ESRB info confirms combat with firearms, explosives, chainsaws, more

What are you expecting the actual gameplay reveal of Resident Evil 7 to look like?

Damn, if we get fucking chainsawed by a npc I'll shit my pants with a VR headset on
Like you travel and hear the rustling of a chain saw and if you turn into a wrong area, welp

I'm almost tempted to wait on buying PS VR because I bet capcom will have a special edition VR headset with blood decals 😎

So what are they supposed to do? If they show a lot of the game they'll be criticized like Naughty Dog was for showing a lot of Uncharted 3, if they don't then apparently they're making NMS.

I think there's a difference between showing many hours of Uncharted 3 and showing even a shred of footage of your primary method of interaction with zombies in a game entirely about interacting with zombies.

So why the fuck are they wasting time with these anti-hype teasers? Trying to sell people on slow paced VR horror when you've got a visceral action shooter underneath seems counterproductive, when the latter sells far more than the former.

To drive home the point that it actually isn't a visceral action shooter like the last games.

You're not allowed to judge games on what developers actually show any more, hadn't you heard.

When they deliberately say "this is a teaser and not fully representative of the game proper," I mean I take that into account. It only seems fair and reasonable. If it ends up being a WYSIWYG scenario, then we'll talk. I guess I'm just having a hard time understanding the concept of pinpointing everything about it when we know so little.

I take teasers as teasers and until I've seen the full game proper, I don't plan on proclaiming that I know exactly what it is.

Chris, a man searching for his missing compatriots, Bravo team.
Claire, a woman searching for her missing brother.
Chris, a man searching for his missing sister.
Leon, a man searching for his president's missing daughter.
Chris, a man searching for his missing, presumed dead pardnuh.

That's what I thought too. Half this thread reads like people haven't even played the series.

I too greatly prefer Silent Hill 1 to its sequel. It's better than than most RE games, in fact.

But SH2 is still one hell of a great game.

The people that were worried about this being another hiding game can relax now. :)

Oh, they're not out of the woods yet. We need footage of someone combining a red and green herb along with 1996 before writers/voice actors gave a shit dialogue before we know it's Resident Evil proper.

So it's not an action shooter, it's not a horror game, it's just a thing coming out in 5 months, pre-order now?

I don't want to tell someone how to do their jobs but Capcom seems like they're just throwing money away with their promotion for this game.

It says 'Resident Evil 7' on it, so basically yes. And I have preordered, despite my significant trepidation.

Best story in gaming. But if for whatever fucked up reason :)p) the story didn't do anything for you, I can see that.

Even if it did have the best story in gaming, which is doesn't :)p), it wouldn't save the game itself from my criticism, since I consider story one of the least important components of games. Compared to the first Silent Hill, I found it simplistic, dull, and alarmingly, shockingly easy on its default difficulty. Like I said, I had really high hopes, but those hopes were torn down repeatedly.

I'd even consider Origins and Homecoming (the only other SH games I've played besides 1 and 2) superior. Silent Hill 2 definitely goes down in my book as one of the most overrated games of its generation.

edit: Wait, shit, not Homecoming. I'm thinking of Downpour.

It's a first-person horror title set after the events of Resident Evil 6. Like in traditional Resident Evil titles, there is combat, but it won't be a focus and primarily exists for self-defense and yeah, possibly your typical boss fights and whatnot.

There will also be plenty of material shown between now and January that should give any potential buyers a reason, or lack thereof, to purchase the game.

It's amazing how the most relevant info we have about the game, other than it being a FPS, came from an ESRB rating.

Thankfully. This is all anyone asked for really, it was disappointing seeing another low key trailer after they'd already given us a low key demo to play. They've more or less delivered on the creepy atmosphere since, now I'm excited to see survival aspects and combat.

I for one am glad that they're not just showing everything off like RE5 and 6 did. Their trailers showed way too much

7 demo's/trailers? Haven't heard of that before. Did they state that was their plan?
7 was my bad memory what they said...

The demo, just to be clear, isn’t a slice of the game. We really want to focus on what concepts we want players to understand about the game with the demo, and that’s horror. This is a tonal preview of what to expect in the game, rather than a little bit of game content you’re getting in advance. In the 20 year history of Resident Evil, you know that the key pillars of the game are fear and horror, exploration of the environment, puzzle-solving elements, resource management, and combat against enemies. Those are all in this game, but we wanted to start off with the first two – horror and exploration – and get you experiencing those two pillars up front. If you’re thinking that because those other elements aren’t in the demo, that they won’t be in the game, that’s not the case. We’re focusing up front about the message of horror coming home in this demo.

I want to give a reassuring message. I’ve seen from initial reactions of what we’ve put out that people are getting the impression that we’ve taken Resident Evil and turned it into some sort of supernatural, occult, ghost story. I think you can look at the trailer or the demo and get that impression, but don’t worry, we haven’t just thrown out Resident Evil as it exists and turned it into a ghost story. It will all make sense in the end. I know it’s frustrating holding back on what we can show fans, but this is really the best way to let you enjoy the game to the fullest when it finally comes out. We just have a trailer and a demo at this moment, but watch this space in the coming months and we hope you look forward to the game. We’re going to do our best to make the best game we can.

That means the first demo was to show "horror"... the others elements will be showed via others demos or trailers.

That was from E3.

Sure, and they're obviously going to get to a point where they show that. The fact that they showed the lantern trailer after criticism of the original reveal makes me think that they have a specific plan for how they want to show the game and they aren't going to budge from it. Both times they've shown it they've showed a different type of gameplay. The demo/Desolation was more about puzzle solving, you were never really in any danger aside from the character in the videotape. Lantern was more of the hide & seek style that seems to anger some. At TGS they have a demo and stage event planned (and presumably a new trailer as well), so that's more than likely where they're going to reveal the type of gameplay that people tend to associate with the series.

I'd also point out again that people should rewatch the trailer shown during Sony's conference at E3. The one where they pull back the camera and show a bunch of different screens. If you look around on them you'll see a bunch of different types of gameplay that they event shown in a proper trailer yet. That includes gun combat as well as a character (i'm guessing Ethan) crashing a car.

Why does it always have to be dudes looking for their women?

Eh, guy looking for wife/daughter has been done to death and is one of the most boring story setups in gaming. Even Revelations already did that with Barry looking for his daughter. I prefer the demo set up of camera crew for shitty Ghost Hunters show get mixed up in actual real horrors.

Getting a lot more enthusiastic about this game the more I see and read about it. The Gamescom trailer wasn't a great showing imo, but this new info is exactly what I wanted to hear.

OK, I wasn't sure what you were referring to. Yes, I've read all the dev interviews, and I'm aware that they said they'd be showing other things later on. I just think it was a bad move in the end that turned a lot of people off, and left others like me skeptical of what they were saying, simply because what they'd chosen to show off of the game was so radically different from what they'd described. Also, for the record, I'm not writing off the full game without having seen all it has to offer, or having played it for myself. I wouldn't do that, not when this is my favorite video game franchise ever. I've only ever said that I don't like what I've seen and played so far. There's still a chance for RE7 to win me over, most definitely.

Sure, fair enough.

I can see it being about maybe Umbrella kidnapping her for some reason to do experiments. But who knows, it could be anything. Like I said, that's just the basic plot jump start, who you're playing as, why he's out there. The original Silent Hill was about a guy wrecking his car and his daughter mysteriously vanishing from the crash site, but the actual story was much more than that.

I am so hyped for this game.

If they'd just done Resident Evil 6 on steroids I wouldnt have had any interest and Resident Evil 2 Remake is coming to scratch that type of itch.

Even if should it not an amazing end product I absolutely applaud their approach. The demo and the 'Go Tell Aunt Rhody' trailer are stellar.

The premise of Silent Hill 2 is about a man looking for his dead wife and it turned out great.
Sure, but Capcom's no Team Silent, man. No RE story has ever matched SH2's, and I say that as someone who prefers classic RE to classic SH in almost every way possible. Still, maybe the story will be awesome? Hard to say at this point. Right now, I'm mainly just bummed that (so far, at least) there won't be any returning characters. I love the classic RE cast, and I already miss 'em something fierce. :(

I agree, SH 2 is beyond every RE game in terms of story and it's not even close. I just used SH 2 as example to show that the premise could sound generic event though the story as a whole is good.

Resident Evil 4 was Resident Evil on steroids, RE5 was RE4 on steroids, and RE6 was all of that while taking its own steroids and shooting shit into the veins while blowing giraffes. Eventually you flatline.

Resident Evil and Silent Hill have extremely different storytelling prerogatives and I doubt that will change. RE7 being about a guy searching for his wife doesn't mean that they're trying to be Silent Hill 2. It just means that it's about a guy searching for his wife. :p

I hear you and yet whilst I differ in opinion in that I think the main players in Resi are played out at this point, Ive got a feeling we are in for a MGS2 type unadvertised swerve.

First half - new protagonist, tense atmospheric weaponless survive em up in cabin type environments ala the demo and trailer with almost supernatural elements

Second half - hits a classic Spencer Mansion type backdrop, supporting established Resi cast show up, weapons come in and shit absolutely goes down.
