You'll love it. Try to soak in the natural beauty of the area. It's like a fairytale land if you're like us and from the mid-west (the Hill Country is pretty, sure, but it's no Cascades or Olympics).

I wish I had known about the pinball museum when I was there a few months ago. I would have checked that out. I didn't have a chance to swing by Pink Gorilla (are they still open?) while we were there either, but it looks like they are definitely worth a visit.

Have a fun and safe trip. I'm envious. I would hop on a flight to Seattle today if I had the time. Haha!

I am in Alabama (lived there pretty much all my life) so it will *definitely* be a culture shock compared to what I see daily (and the heat I experience during summer).

I haven't traveled much and would really prefer a companion, but this time I'm going to go solo and explore a bit to kinda go out of my comfort zone a bit. Definitely going to take a lot of pictures and try some unique food and restaurants.

Thanks for the well wishes and advice though, it all helps!

You're going to find it's a lot less... flat... than Alabama. Among other things.

I found Edge of the Circle Books and Pink Gorilla the other day. I was definitely a happy camper. Now I just need money. And a place to hook stuff up at.

I spent the last week in Pasco where it was 100 every day but the house had central air so I never noticed. Not terribly happy about being back in Seattle right now.

Last night was NASTY.

The girls slept in our basement bedroom.

I rolled around upstairs, in a semi conscious fugue, like someone with Dysentery trying to win an Oscar in The English Patient.

I dreamed that I had to fly over a humid jungle mountain with my wife on my back, like a reverse Banjo Kazooie. We plummeted into a wet rocky volcanic crater of muck and rock and mire.

When I snapped out of that - it had cooled down significantly and it's gray and pleasant outside, but the house is still hotter than a corrupt Bayou Sherriff's crotch.

Oh man, had something similar two or three nights ago. The whole night was like a hallucinatory haze.

I was camping over near Lake Wenatchee this weekend. It was hot enough to jump in glacial runoff rivers, but it sounds like you guys had it worse back home.

Have 5 separate AC units in my house. Had to dedicate one to my beer in the garage though lol; covered it in a tarp and ran multiple tubes to the garage door and kind of left it cracked. Just can't use my office when I'm doing that; had the bright idea last night though.. make my office my beer cellar!

Room has been 66 every night from the AC; living room can't get much cooler than 75 since it's too large for a portable unit to cool effectively.

My power bill will probably be $600 for the 2 month period of Mid-Jun to Mid-August though.

Sup Seattle GAF.

In less then two weeks I'll be eating your delicious, delicious Top Pot Donuts. Also I'll be organizing the GAF PAX meetup again. I would love to see more locals show up even if they don't have PAX tickets.

You can keep up with things here:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1267191

Date and time for the meetup to be determined soon. If anyone wants to go but has time commitments, speak up!

Anyone in Seattle GAF in the video production/post production/graphics industry? I'm looking for a change of pace from Florida and wasn't sure how the market is there

And I'm in the east coast in 90 degree humid weather. :(

Man I don't miss living on the east coast. Summer here was glorious and amazingly I'm allergy free here compared to living over there. So let me ask since I just moved to the area a few months ago. How "gloomy" does it get compared to say NYC in winter? Are the people who complain about cloudy grey weather mostly from like California?

Fairly wet. Constant cloud cover and gloomy. Snow isn't as common as it used to be (probably because of temperatures generally being warmer). Basically, don't expect to see the sun until spring.

The weather is not as extreme as NYC in the winter. It will drizzle a bunch and you might not see the sun for a loooooooong time, but if you can handle that you'll be fine.

If it snows everything shuts down, but that's pretty rare and it would only last a week at most probably.

That said, we'll occasionally get a break in the cloud cover and have a bright sunny day that peaks at 36F :p The last two winters have been very mild, though.

Not a fan of the sun anyway lol. And the misty drizzle I don't mind either. Least it isn't rain like on the east coast where you will be completely soaked in a matter of minutes. Actually need an umbrella there. And I've lived with snow and cold my whole life so I'm good on that end lol

I'm actually in Olympia. People say it snows/rains more down here than Seattle? Never bothered to research it however. 36f sounds good to me...better than in the teens and single digits!

Cloudy all day everyday. The sun disappears in fall and comes back in the Spring. Who the fuck wants it anyways, I'm no meteorologist but without cloud cover its cold as fuck.

I don't really get the gloomy part since I've always lived here, but I'm a pretty happy guy and I don't think the weather fucks with that!

Lets be honest if the Seahawks win it can be a blizzard every single day and the entire city is happy. Weather doesn't have anything to do with my mood in the fall/winter. Football does.

Totally hipster way to respond to that!

j/k; I think it's not too hard to not know any Seahawks fans in Seattle. There's probably less of a chance you won't know any the farther you live out in the suburbs. My neighborhood sounds like the JBLM mortar range on Sundays; at least when we are actually scoring TD's.

Hey Seattlelites! For a black male of 27, from Atlanta, in the tech world studying web programing. A bit of a hipster, loves gaming, diversity, having access to local shops and cool events. Where is a good place to look for a 1br apartment or studio. So far I have Ballard, Capitola hill, Lower Queen Anne, First Hill, Freemont, and Belltown.

Also would it be hard for dating no matter what race women are, and for making friends there?

Thanks in adavance

Those are good neighborhoods, but a heads up that housing prices right now are pretty crazy. Just be prepared. Maybe look for places close to light rail (Capitol Hill, Beacon Hill, Columbia City, etc.). The Central District is pretty diverse, at least for Seattle.

Speaking of that, Seattle is very white. If you're coming from Atlanta it might shock you how white we are. I don't think you'd have a problem dating, though. I dunno. I'm a white dude who's been married for ten years and hasn't had to date since 2003.

Fremont and Ballard are nice places also look at Wallingford which isn't far from both neighborhoods. And you'll see lots of mix raced couples here in Seattle, pretty diverse and open minded city.

Probably Ballard or Fremont, but 1BR are ridiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiculously expensive there. I would look for roommates on craigslist or something.

Can't speak much to dating. People in Seattle pride themselves in being very progressive though, but since there is so little actual diversity here people don't often have to put their money where their mouth is. I don't think you'd have trouble dating, but I could be wrong.

Diversity is a funny word though, isn't Atlanta basically 1/3rd white 2/3rds black?

We have 2/3rds white and 1/3rd a diverse mix.

I mean it's white as fuck not denying that lol.

That's a pretty spot on description. I've had way too many awkward conversations with fellow liberal friends as to why Black Lives Matters should exist.

Yeah a lot of lilly white liberals who donate to the NAACP but cross the street when a black person is walking towards them.

I had to sit and listen to a speech by a cop family friend of mine about how Black Lives Matters is built on a lie. Most awkward five minutes of my life.

The sad part is Seattle used to be more diverse but now gentrification is happening in neighborhoods all across the city and we're becoming a bit like Portland. Even Seattle Public Schools are becoming more segregated and homogeneous. With the influx of affluent people from other states who bring their own sense of liberalism, Seattle is becoming a bit like 2 separate cities in one.

Seattle is super expensive now compared to when I was a kid living in South king County and I'd visit my uncle living in the U-District. We are not the gritty blue collar city we once were, it's now TECH TECH TECH and we're becoming San Francisco Jr.. The cost of living continues to rise and lots of lower income and minority families are being driven south into Kent and Auburn and also down into Pierce County.

Hell, Seattle now is way different than the city I moved to after finishing graduate school in 2004. I feel incredibly fortunate to have bought my house in NE Seattle back when I did. Shit is crazy now.

It's insanity. I'm only able to stay where I'm at because my landlord apparently loves Section 8 tenants. Not sure how long that'll last though, given that I'm paying $900 a month and the average rent here for a one-bedroom is $1700.

($900 is what the average was when I moved here in 1999. How things have changed.)

That sucks, but I also thank you for the perspective. We've got a Section 8 house down the street from us and I've always wondered how much that family might be paying. They're great people and their kids are super cool, I'd hate to see them leave.

Wow Seattle is really sounded like a place I may not feel connected too it seems. racial ignorance and diversity is very important to me. and Atlanta has changed, it is a mecca of diversity in the south almost like a NYC. People who dont live here are surprise that a southern city is kinda progressive in that form. As a black male, its hard to pick up and choose where to move because I have to worry about things like this :/

Oh! I didn't know there was a Seattle OT. I'm moving to seattle, should arrive by Friday. From Chicago. In the beacon hill neighborhood. Im super excited. Should have a job in a couple months time. BF is already there, he did is undergrad at UDUB. (Did I do it right?)

Visited last year for a week and seriously enjoyed it. What should I look forward too? :p besides rain. (Har har)

What are some great hospitals? I know I'll apply at UW Hospital and Seattle children's(im a RN)

Also! Century Link or Xfinity? It doesn't seem like our building supports and gigabit options. Any other isp's to consider. We already have a modem and router.

It really depends. All the hip neighborhoods are super white or full of transplants from other states like yourself. The culture is different as a result. But south and arguably central Seattle have held onto their diversity even with increased gentrification. You might enjoy Columbia City which is 2 blocks of extreme gentrification but with cool businesses and otherwise still surrounded by old Seattle asian, pacific islander, and black neighborhoods. The main issue is that south Seattle is mainly residential so there's not much to do. Central district is still pretty diverse, has a vibrant nightlife, but is increasingly expensive. The further north you go, the whiter Seattle gets. For some people, young, affluent, white neighborhoods is exactly the Seattle experience they are seeking. That's not the Seattle I grew up in and maybe it wouldn't be right for you.

To those of you moving to Seattle, I read this article yesterday and it encapsulates a big part of how Seattle is changing. "A teardown a day: Bulldozing the way for bigger homes in Seattle, suburbs"
The homes are typically flipped fast and for a healthy profit. Here’s a typical transformation: A small Ravenna home on 17th Avenue Northeast, built in 1929, was bought by developers for $450,000 in April 2015 after the owners died. The building company promptly demolished it, built a boxy modern home three times as large, and sold it to an Amazon executive this June for $1.435 million.
And this is calling all the neighborhoods touching downtown and farther suburbs, not just the outer edges.

Children's is amazing, but I'd guess the hardest to get a job in. Sweedish (on Pill Hill and Ballard) is a good one too.
Beacon Hill is in a stranglehold for ISPs. Last time I looked not all services are available there even if they are in other parts of the city. Century Link is expanding in the neighborhood and there is Wave.
