COMICS! |OT| August 2016. That's Rare Groove. Volume is Crucial.

Haha. There's an argument in there that watchmen was a noir, with the narrative style, the broken compromised heroes and so on, but I did snort to see the implication form DC that it has become Noir, simply because its black and white,

One day, we're going to see New Frontier Noir. Just you wait.

Flying sucks, but it does give me time to read comics. 18 issues in to Gotham Central and loving every minute of it. Driving right back in for my next flight.

Brilliant, first time? I still love the first volume the most, so good.

Omfg that is so awesome. I feel guilty about Fegredo because mignola makes hellboy. Mignola is amazing artist. All of mignola work on hellboy is my favourite shit.

Fegredo is maybe best hellboy?I feel like i shouldn't say it out loud but I do think it sometimes.

Haha, that got a laugh out loud. Mostly because I'm not entirely convinced it couldn't happen. Cooke loved parker, they could do it as a tribute. ...shudder.

Hellboy was at it best when he took over for Magnolia, he's amazing.

Definitely, that specific run with Fegredo is incredible. I LOVE the stuff mike did right before that though, the three wishes and the island are incredible. The first volumes are so good for all the random stories and encounters but 6-9 where hellboy navigates his destiny, good damn. Right up to the "I will not go alone", holy shit haha. I still get goosebumps over that. Can't wait for hellboy in hell vol 2 to drop

Oh dear that statue is incredible. Really wish I had that, and the jock one while we're on the subject.

If mike were ever to humour the big two and do a mini or something, it would have to be batman.

It's a shame he didn't do the pencils for The Doom That Came To Gotham.

I bought Civil War 2 #1 thx to the sale CMX has for it (two bucks). Art is beautiful and the set up is pretty great. It's feels like I'm missing stuff because I didn't read the 0 issue. Can't wait for another sale to get the rest.

List! Only DC books because I'm waiting on Marvel sales for their stuff on the books I haven't dropped and the Image and other books I'm reading will have to wait for the next big sale because I have a big backlog right now. Might actually wait on some of these depending on how I feel on Wednesday.
  • Bombshells Annual(Elsa Charretier art~)
  • Earth 2: Society Annual
  • Suicide Squad: War Crimes(Ostrander! Anyone else picking it up?)
  • Gotham Academy Annual
  • Harley Quinn and Her Gang of Harleys #5
Future Quest #4 will sadly have to wait around a month.

Edit:
Marvel's best of 2016 sale on cmx only has five issues. That many?
And wasn't the first Choosing Sides issue fairly meh?

The more I read of ANAD X-men the less I like it, boring teen drama dialled up to 100. I take back what I said about not having a list, Dennis Hopeless is number one. Going to give Extraordinary a try instead.

Haha. The blacklist. It will grow.

Not sure I'll go for extraordinary x-men. Lemire is a fantastic writer on his own stuff but work for hire is up and down. Old man logan or moon knight look more likely as fitting him than x-men.

Why don't you try Spider-Woman Vol.1. It's about her being pregnant and delivering her baby in a space hospital. I read it a few weeks ago and liked it.

It's seems okay so far, certainly more of what I expect from a X book with a much better cast of characters. I'd give it a try you might like it. I wish Emma was in the book though.

I'm not sure if anyone else is reading it but got to say
having X-Haven in Limbo and relying on Magik to never get knocked out in the field is the kind of ridiculousness I can get behind. Savage Land would likely have been less of a hassle lol

I tried it when it first started but didn't really care for it.

I really really want to read some of him writing old man logan I might grab them together. One of the main characters in sweet tooth is similarly an old damaged hardcase, I can reaaally see lemire nailing that character. Given that logan is a mutant and a time traveller too, he could do some crazy stuff.

I find a lot of the dialogue to suffer from Waid-itis. An old ass dude trying to emulate culture he doesn't really understand based on what he's seen, so it comes off as kind of stiff and unnatural, but I am still compelled by a majority of the elements in this book (including the art).

I think there is
more to this cool girl thing than we think. A part of me thinks she isn't dead and doesn't really exist, but is instead a manifestation of her "coolness" dying. She's more or less coming to terms with growing up and becoming irrelevant.

But we will see what happens.

I think the writer does a good job of giving them a believable voice. I have girl friends who act just like that. I love how O'Malley addresses real social trends in snotgirl.

I think he is one of the best in the game when it comes to writing younger characters.

I didn't find any of it unnatural though. just think of it as an exaggeration of real life.

You cant put a guy for every book on a Blacklist.
Not everyone can work with everything. Look at Fraction and the Inhumans for example. Or Bendis and Daredevil, Alias and then Teambooks.

Pretty much why I don't have a blacklist. Even Mark Millar has some good shit. Starlight and Huck, for example

Well I can speak to this example of someone who loved, the disappointed me over time. So I will always look in and see what he's doing but remain skeptical. I will try things every now and again, just in case, especially if he has a really good artist with him, but I won't get my hopes up.

If a writer really offends all your sensibilities as to what you find good storytelling though, or an artist, then sure you can. If I know for a fact a writer has an extremely poor grip on characters, or uses exposition out the ass and doesn't know how to naturally convey information to a reader, then I'm never going to enjoy it, no matter what it is.

Conversely there are writers I know I can whitelist It literally will not matter the genre of book or what the premise is, if a writer writes in a style I love and prioritises whay I consider important, the I know I will love it. To step out of comics, I have read about 40 of Stephen Kings novels now, and I will keep going until I read them all. They vary wildly in genre, tone, length at times but his writing style, and how he backbones a story is consistent so I know I will enjoy it regardless.

To note though, all of these are based on personal preference. Some people might think amazing spiderman has been mind blowing for its whole run, and I fully respect that. It means we have different tastes but not that one has bad taste, just different.

I definitely think with experience you can write off a writer permanently though, or an artist. It's especially easy when you start to consider that it costs you money for a book that is perpetually getting there, or a stepping stone to something else, when you could be using said money to get the best books out there.

I need to pick up Old Man Logan, I missed out on the Secret Wars mini as well.

Quite enjoying the story in The Hellblazer Rebirth and #1, but fuck are the artwork and page layouts iffy as hell.

Wasn't Kirby at one point drawing (and probably writing) four or five books a month?

The guy was a comic making machine.

Edeit: Perhaps thats an overestimation. But still.

I think he was doing an average of 3-4 during the four Fourth World books.

Still slowly making my way through Walt Simonson's Thor run, really good stuff. Balder might be my new favorite character. People say they like the initial run with Surtur, but I think it's gotten even more interesting. At the point with frog thor.

Was looking at picking up some current Marvel Trades. Is Aaron's current run on Thor good?

Balder is so awesome. Like I would expect a great hero out of an epic to be. Actually, I love a lot of the supporting cast in that run and that Simonson spent so much time on each of them.

This should be before Frog Thor, so hopefully not a spoiler for you.

Yes. They both started off poorly so they ended quickly.

Nighthawk is miles ahead of Hyperion, then again, both are DC expys

Problem is what happened with Starbrand and some other books from ANAD/NOW 2.0, some people don't have a big name strong enough to have a solo these days. Especially in this era of Hollywoo Comics.

Dr.Strange #4-5 - The Empirikul make their move and its...scary. Aaron the goat actually creating a nice sense of dread with this story, the way he describes magic and uses it to tell a story is fantastic, it really feels like a otherworldly thing. And what else is there to say about Bachalo? This book man...

Scarlet Witch #2-3 - In contrast, this depiction of magic couldnt be more vanilla. And boring. Nice art in issue #2 but I have little interest in anything going on in this story, as its just another cliche evil wizard doing evil wizard things. Steve Dillon in issue #3 was unexpected tho.
