Editorial: Can a Film Be So Good It's Bad?

I believe that's called "hype backlash"

Next week's episode
clip-less review of Ghostbusters 2016

Summer Wars is like Digimon Our War Game only better and with less dead eyes.

EDIT: Is that Lindsay in the Chipmunks review?

No, it's one of the hosts of the "Awesome Comics" show. Pretty sure Lindsay has burned all the Channel Awesome bridges.

I thought that girl looked like her.

Also I thought there wasn't bad blood between them? In fact I thought mentioned some of them a few times like in her comic crossovers retrospective.

As someone who enjoyed the film partially, the opening had me laughing. That was amazing!

What happened with Lindsay? I was just asking myself whatever happened with the Nostalgia Chick.

She stopped working for Channel Awesome, but still works on YouTube under her personal channel. She also (re)uploads the old videos.

Edit: He missed the cameo of Annie Potts! :(

That review reminded me I couldn't find a single damn pack of Ecto Cooler anywhere in my town.

Also, I feel like the whole
"there's a somewhat funny moment ruined by an unfunny moment followed after"
argument holds true, based on the trailers I watched. I was close to laughing, but then was ruined because they just couldn't let the joke stand by itself.

& completely agree that
the secretary character looked way too stupid

She got burned out on being the Nostalgia Chick several years ago and started moving towards a "real job" in Hollywood. Her internet video output got slower and slower until she officially gave the "Nostalgia Chick" title back to Doug Walker and asked him to hire a new one, but he decided to hang up her jersey and retire the name. She occasionally still makes internet videos, but it's just a hobby, not a full-time job.

I think she's on record as saying that Doug was kind of a dick to work for, but that seems to be an open secret and I don't think they're actively feuding.

From what I gather is that it's not Doug, but everything around him that's a bit of a mess. Especially when they replaced one of the founders with someone else whos a large reason why the website started to bleed out of producers to fast. Which is a shame because many have done some amazing stuff.

Lupa seems to imply that it's Doug himself. From what I've seen on her Tumblr at least.

NC: Wild Wild West

Man, I remember the marketing for this thing via Burger King. Hell, I still have some of the sunglasses you could only get from BK.

Next week is interesting, it's
a review of all the Looney Tunes movies that've been shown in theaters

Edit: Wait, this movie was based on a TV show? Damn, never knew that.

"Does this film take place in progressive times, or is that honestly supposed to fool us?"

"I identify as unfunny!"

...um, yikes, Doug.

Seems Tommy Wiseau is firing his copyright gun again. The Room review was taken down from the YouTube channel, along with the video where Doug interviews Wiseau.
It sounds site-wide as IHateEverything's review of The Room was also taken down.

What are you doing Tommy?

I liked Back in Action. It was enjoyable for me. I like Fraser and always enjoy movies or shows where animated characters live in the same universe as humans as if it's just "normal". Same with puppets. Which is why I like the Muppets and Greg the Bunny.

Doug should use it to his advantage.

- Malcolm in the NC costume with a big grin on his face "Hello, I'm the Substitute Nostalgia Critic. I remember it because Doug's too much of a big baby to do the show this week."
- Cut to Doug, lying under a blanket in bed, with a fake thermometer in his mouth and ice pack on his head, who mutters a weak "I heard that."
- Cut back to Malcolm who cocks his head to the side and shouts "I know you did. So come over here and stop me. No? Didn't think so."
- Face back to the camera, grin back on like a switch, Malcolm proceeds to do the show mostly as Doug would have done it, with occasional errors thrown in for comedic effect, like sometimes making it obvious that he's reading a script by having him stop and question the script.

Next week
- Tamara "Hello I'm the Substitute Nostalgia Critic. I remember it because Malcolm stole the chair last time." (that last part dripping with anger)
- Malcolm heard echoing off in the distance "I have seniority..."

That would be awesome.

I think if it wasn't too dragged out (keep it the length of an editorial), that could actually be kind of funny, then the 3rd week is a cameo but Doug charges in after getting better & gains control of the show again.

We need him to read this thread. 10 minute episodes while he is sick would work well.

Editorial: Is Weird the New Brilliant?

Basically, cartoons contain commentary that isn't on the surface.

Next week:
Tentacolino, the sequel to the second animated Titanic movie

I literally have no idea what Doug's argument is this time around. I think maybe I am getting caught up in the title, but as he points out in the video itself, "weirdness" has always been tied to brilliance. I feel like he wanted to talk about modern cartoons being deeper than they appear on the surface, but he already did an editorial on modern cartoons, so he focused on...the...weirdness? Some of his examples aren't even that weird. Avatar is very straightforward narratively.

I did love that he focused so much on BoJack though. Definitely agree that it's one of the best shows in recent memory, maybe even one of the best ever.

Well pretty glad to hear his MLP example, in spite of having shown no interest in the show.

So I guess, we will have to wait for
the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie
review for awhile. Was looking forward to that, but great to see that he is reviewing
Tentacolino
.

I was able to get a glimpse of the film via Animat's top 10 worst
animated sequels
, with said film being his no.1 entry. And dear god, was it completely horrendous, even worse than
Legend of the Titanic
. All I can say was, "What were they thinking?!"

On YouTube now

In the past, Doug has been really dismissive of MLP, notably leaving it out of that video about cartoons being better than expected (IIRC) when that's one of the biggest examples, so it was a surprise to see it in this video. I doubt he's actually started watching the show, though. By the way, he claims that the adult male fanbase is bigger than the little girls, but from all appearances, the little girl fans still outnumber the adult males by a large margin. They just don't go to conventions as much.

As for what point he was trying to make, I think he was just giving examples of how things aimed at kids / weird things aimed at adults are being used to make real points. I will agree that Avatar is an odd inclusion, though.

My mother passed away today. It was sudden and unexpected, but she died peacefully in her sleep. Those who knew her or even met her briefly could feel her kindness and love. She adored helping others and giving endless compassion where ever she could. She is the kindest person I have ever known. I love you Mom, and I will miss you.

Didn't she make a cameo in the christmas tree vid? where else did she appear?

The Christmas Tree is all I can recall her being in, his father has done a whole bunch of things in and for the videos since he rebooted it. But man this is sudden. I hope he, his brother, father and rest of his family manage too work this all together.

She also was in that Disney Afternoon video, near the end when she was all "do your homework" along with Malcolm's mother.

Doug always seemed to speak positively about her in videos when he was just being himself (along with the ending of Christmas Tree when), huge condolences to him & his family.

That's sad. My condolences to the Walker family.

I think she also showed up in the Christmas with the Kranks video with a comment on not letting him back into the house.

Someone might have to explain me
the female cameo was, she was the only one of the 4 I didn't know
. Either way, maaaaaan I can't believe they somehow made an even worse animated Titanic.

Also next week's editorial will be interesting,
Does PG mean anything anymore?
