I wasn't sure what to think haha.
I just kept trying to decide if I liked what I was seeing.

well we are not the target audience

For the commercial? Absolutely. But I don't think the commercial accentuates Persona 5's strengths at all. Comes off as weird and obtuse, while the game is sleek and stylish.

Edit: I don't fault Atlus for this one. I think this is something born from Sony.

At the very least it'll get people talking and see the game. The game speaks for itself.

Welcome to commercials in Japan. They are either really un-creative and blatant or so random they make youtube highlights with no context. Few commercials for games actually relate at all to the freaking game sadly. Either way this is more about the console over the game. Probably used persona simply cause its coming out next week.

If it wasn't clear, this is supposed to be comedic

She's dressing up as the historical figure on the 5000 yen bill which is how much the price is dropping for the slim

It's basically just an advertisement that the reduced price slim and P5 come out the same day

This is really normal for Japanese commercials, which are often only abstractly linked to the product they're promoting. Also, she's playing the piano while belting out literally the price of the console. I wish the rest of it was subbed, because it seems really funny.

This ad is more about the price drop and a reminder that Persona 5 is also for PS4.

Edit: Wow beaten on both points by two different posters

So what are the expectations for first week in Japan?

For the slim or P5? The best selling Persona game ever in Japan is the original, which sold around 400k units. P4 is next up with around 300k. It also outsold P3's lifetime sales in its first week. With that said, the hype is there for it. Sony also did it a huge favor by launching the slim alongside it. So I think it could be at least the second best selling game in the series after its first week. And unless its just completely horrid it'll be the best selling game in the franchise when all is said and done.

True suffering is knowing there will be a PS4 Slim + P5 bundle in Japan, but it's just the standard console and not a limited edition version

If that's what they were going for then... Good job...I guess?

I think it's meant to be comedic. Obviously, that didn't do anything for me. But as was said before, this is targeted to the Japan games market. Still obtuse. But lots of RPGs there have had weird commercials in the past so Persona isn't unique in this. Just thought Persona would rise above it.

I am familiar with Japanese commercials. Just thought Persona would go with they've been doing this entire time with their marketing.

Please enjoy the randomness of Japanese commercials.

It will have it's own standalone commercials, and it already has.

They are selling a bundle with a silly commercial.

Can't believe Persona 5 is finally coming out. Hopefully they don't wait almost a decade between titles next time.

That was fantastic co-marketing between Sony and Atlus. The repeated hammering of the message of the slim, P5, the pricecut and use of '5' was genius. I expect cuts of this ad going around Japan next week to hype the releases on 9.15 for both.

Dammit OP, don't show me these hilarious videos. Not good to be laughing with a bruised rib.

I found it hilarious. The long singing about the price and the giant PS4 in a city were my highlights.

Is there any word on whether P5 is being released in Asia? I know a number of Japanese devs have pointed out that the Asian releases have bumped their sales up a decent amount (Nagoshi with Yakuza being a notable example).

Oh ok, that makes more sense now.

It never ceases to amaze me how people think Japanese advertisements aren't self aware of their silliness and/or ironic.

It's like someone not knowing English watching an American Old Spice commercial and complaining about how it has nothing to do with deodorant.
