Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

What so now we're saying turning MSAA up to 8x improves stuttering? It definitely doesn't eliminate aliasing that's for sure.

It does make a bit of sense though if you consider how the CPU seems to be the bottleneck causing a lot of the stuttering. Lowering the framerate a bit reduces some of that CPU load, so you'll hit that bottleneck a bit less often.

Same specs; the only solution I found was to cap my framerate to 60 IN-GAME. This reduced stuttering almost entirely. Literally everything else didn't work for me.

I'm running on a 5820K, 980Ti, 1440P, using the GeForce experience optimized settings and turned v-sync on in game. It's a smooth 60fps for the most part, but there are occasional dips into the 40s. No noticeable stuttering though. When I had the frame rate unlocked there was some stuttering and lots of screen tearing though. I tried playing at 30fps but 60 just feels much better despite the occasional dips. It's not perfect, but far from unplayable.

I tried capping at 30, 48, 60 and unlocked. Whichever I chose I still had the issue. Also tried the other little things people suggested like disabling core 0 on cpu, uninstalling geforce experience etc. It seems that people even with similar hardware are having vastly different experiences.

How much RAM do you have? I have a similar set-up and it runs fine for me when it auto detected settings. I then tried the suggest nvidia settings via the GeForce Experience optomized settings and got bad input lag.

I have 16gb of Ram. The main issue I had was it would run normally then I'd get this huge stutter or framerate drop for a few seconds then back to normal. This would happen very often as in once in every 5-10 seconds. Also the framerate counter at the top right didn't seem to register the drop I was seeing on screen.

Even trying to install this game has been a nightmare. The Windows' store download is always hung up, so I did that Reddit workaround only to be met with another impassable error in Powershell. As far as I can tell, everything is up to date and I followed the instructions to the letter.

I'm really at a loss as to what to do here.

At the moment the game just isn't optimized for 60fps. Everything at medium, locked at 60 and in the city I'm getting drops to 40 all over the place. In the outback the frame rate actually holds pretty well at 60, but again on medium. Just cranked everything up to ultra and locked it to 30 and it's rock solid 30 right now. Think I might play like this just because it looks so good. Hopefully a patch comes with some optimization soon.

For as much moaning about performance I have done, I have to say the game is fantastic when it shines.

I have settled for 50fps at 2560x1440p ultra 8xmsaa and it looks stunning and does not stutter or drop frames much at all.

Had a nice blue screen crash today in Surfers doing a championship race, framerate dropped to 22 from the beginning of the race before the crash. When I booted back up the same race gave me steady 30 then the game closed on me. These are the first crashes I have had. Looking at logs it looks related to EFS as there are a lot of errors reported to it.

I wonder what digital foundry did to avoid stuttering. Their xbox / pc comparison video doesn't exhibit any stuttering and they were playing on a 970 @ 1440p / ultra preset.

I would assume they were playing at 30fps. And you're pretty much guaranteed not to get stuttering at 30fps.

They need to fix being unable to start without an internet connection. You can play offline just fine once you're into the game, so it literally makes no sense.

I'm really about to give up on this pile of garbage and just refund it.

I've been going through the mentioned problems regarding performance. Then having the game crash to desktop during the intro-logo-thing which I had to resolve by activating Hyper-V-someting in Windows 10.

And finally I get to enjoy the game by capping it to 30fps in nvidia inspector and setting the game settings to ultra, getting stable performance, then NOW I'm getting crashes during the exact same race. The early one on the 12 apostles-beach during night time. Any one else been having these??

Do you have an overclock on your GPU?

Yes, I have the factory overclocked EVGA 970. I get like texture/graphical anomalies blinking a couple of times, then boom, crash.

Do you think the overclock is the issue? I haven't overclocked it myself.

Never heard of this. Have you tried turning off Windows Firewall or any anti-virus you have? Do other games work okay?

Yes every other game works fine. Forza Horizon 3 worked "fine" too but suddenly I got this error. Now it works again and I did nothing different.
I think I will give up because I am already frustrated with this game. I turn it on and it works fine and after 30 minutes it starts to stutter even in same races that it worked great couple minutes ago.
It's like it gets worse the longer I play it. Tommorow I will have 1070 delivered but I am afraid it won't change a thing.
Game is awesome but totally ruined on PC by this BULLSHIT.

I'd have doubted it being the cause with a factory overclock, but texture/graphical anomalies would potentially suggest some sort of driver crash - not sure what could be causing that - but it could be the cause of further severely reduced performance if you load the game up after that crash without rebooting your machine.

But it may also not make a difference, I've had a driver crash once so far with this game, and like usual - after that crash my clocks are locked to something very low, which reduces performance (happens with driver crashes regardless of game) until I reboot.

I had the same problem with MSAA 8x. Not a single crash since I put it on 4x (and I also lowered the geometry settings).

I give up on this game.

Since I upgraded to 32gb ram, I no longer get out of memory errors. Instead, I get some major frame lag, especially in surfers paradise. You can feel the game get super sluggish, especially if you're driving fast. If you continue driving fast, it does a hard lock, bsod, then hard reboots. I can easily repeat this behavior.

Installed on SSD, i7 4790k, gtx1080, 32gb ram. Everythings watercooled, no overheating.

So... decided to try it on the xbone. While it technically runs fine, I'm actually noticing audio slowdown in the gps directions and music. That was the last straw. I'll come back to this game when stuff's fixed.

This sounds like one of your memory sticks is faulty. I had the same issue when I upgraded RAM. BSOD is a dead giveaway.

Made a video on my hanging in there i5 750 + gtx 970. 1080p30 all ultra settings 8x msaa.

Think I've come down to the only setting having a negative effect on stuttering for me is 60fps/uncapped. Putting everything on low to easily get >60fps = still stuttering. Same settings, cap to 30, reduced stutter. Just bizarre.

Interesting, I'm also running MSAA 8x on my 970. Looks even more likely it's VRAM then. (System reports 99% VRAM usage too FWIW)

I thought so too, but several memory tests showed no problems with the ram.

Honestly I might just reinstall windows. Might fix some issues, but maybe not.

for the last few days the affinity and low priority trick have made my game run worse but doing nothing it runs fine. this game is just a fucking gamble

Running with Ultra on textures, High on geometry, MSAA OFF and Medium on reflections and Shadows. 1080p. No other changes.

Played a couple of hours with the fps counter. It is pretty much locked @60fps It can drop for a second or so to 55fps when there are 6-7 cars on screen + water effects etc but I would barely notice without the fps counter

No stuttering whatsoever (I had this problem before tweaking the settings).
Overall runs quite smooth now

30fps on ultra running an i5 4690k at stock speeds with a 970. Running the game at 1440p.

Wish I could do constant 60fps, but nope. So 30fps and Ultra settings it is!

Rather than rely on tests take out the ram and see if the problem remains.

Scratch what I said about the last Windows 10 update.

Other UWP games such as FM6 Apex, Gears UE, ROTTR, Recore, H5 Forge all run fine on my machine. But this game? The game is bananas. Now it even isn't stutter free at 30fps when it wants to, although it's not as frequent as it's at 60fps. I give up. I've tried more than I feel comfortable with as consumer of a >€70 product.

I really hope that the PC version of Gears 4 won't be a similar disaster as this game is.

980 here and doing the same but the stuttering is bananas. It's worse immediately after a load (whether initial boot-up or after fast travel).

It makes me legitimately nauseous at points. Unplayable until they fix that unfortunately.

Weird, I have similar setup and I'm running the game at 1440p with everything on Ultra and MSAA at 2X, and I get near constant 60 fps with an occasional dip to 55 fps. The only time stutter is introduced is when modding the car, while racing I am stutter free aside from the mentioned dips that sometime occur and are barely noticeable. Dunno why modding the car is such a stutter fest though.

Has anyone run into trouble installing the Windows 10 Anniversary update required to even INSTALL this game??

I spent all day yesterday attempting to install the Windows 10 Anniversary and every single time it would restore my PC to the previous version of Windows on the next restart. So fucking frustrating.

Microsoft requires this Anniversary update to even install Forza and yet the update itself is broken. Typical shit for PC gaming and Microsoft.

I'd love to be playing this at 1080-60.. but On High settings I'm locked 30 and seriously loving the game!! Although shame my R9 390 can't manage ultra 30fps @ 1080

Do you have two HDD hooked up? I had this exact issue and I noticed the behavior looked like it was confused in where to boot, I unhooked the power/SATA cable to my extra HDD and the update installed fine on the next try. Keep everything but your main unplugged and see if that does the trick.
